If You Give a Child a Word- spoken art | Brandon Sanders and Mikeala Miller | TEDxYouth@FtWorth
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Children performed an original poem around a single word they each chose that represented their own spirit, their hopes, dreams and vision for their future.
They accomplished this after dedicating themselves, writing and rehearsing, and putting their words into action as performance art.
Singly, and together, they also demonstrated the results of honing their techniques through the after-school program with their original writing, teamwork, stage presence and speaking skills.
Mikeala Miller and Brandon Sanders
Brandon is 14 and an eighth grade student at Como Montessori school in Fort Worth. Mikeala is 12 years old who attends Dunbar Middle School .They have honed their skills through Voice2Youth, and award-winning poets and artist program presented by a nonprofit organization called the Thank You Darlin’ Foundation. Brandon is a published poet and the winner of three region-wide youth poetry slams. Mikeala says her reading and writing skills have improved tremendously and credits Thank You Darlin’ Foundation program with giving her more confidence to speak in front of an audience.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Amazing to see 2 young people step up and share their passion. Thanks for not only stepping up but, stepping out. Well done!
Mikeala's delivery is slaying me!!! How rhythmic, how powerful, how proud. I live. Brandon's piece was great as well, he sounds so confident and his content is woke. What freaking talented kids.

the title "if you give a child a word" alone is a massively powerful implication.
Wow! I am speechless. These two amazing students just inspired ME in a way I can explain! Had to watch it three times and each time I got chills down my spine. Ready to use it with my Poetry unit this week!

In tears, 🫰 🫰 snaps snaps... absolutely soulful & Beautiful ❤️
Tomorrow is my grades poetry slam. I read my poem in front of my class, I was chosen. Tomorrow, i’m reading my poem in front of the whole fifth grade tomorrow. My poem is about living in anxiety, And been through bullying, And my mom being told she had 12 to 17 months to live. Wish me luck! 😊 Edit: Ok, So I didn’t win. But that’s fine. Except, I kinda cried in the middle of it. 😂

Very nice spoken word. Unfortunately, I couldn't really hear the young girl's spoken word. Overall, great performance. I love the confidence!

1:43 the girls poem with all her talent sounds aggressive instead of just proud. I am sad to see her talent doesn't go by the gentle and kind way but she is taught to sound this harsh. I hope only good things will follow and she will find a more loving voice. The boys poem and his way of sharing it is wonderful, on point. Demonstrates the learning process. Big round of applause.

Dominique Almeida What's sad is critiquing such a gifted young girl's voice because it doesn't fit arbitrary standards of "gentle" and "kind". I think she sounds amazing and her delivery is meaningful...but most importantly, it's HERS.

Funny how you're making her point. You're not seeing her for what her message is.
