As someone who went to schools in many states (but not California), I thought everyone learned about the Donner Party at some point. However, I don't remember if it was specifically 4th grade or some other year (it's really hard to remember when I learned things more than 30 years ago).

Some of y'all didn't have a dad who left the name Donner Party at every restaurant and it shows. Even when we were travelling near Donner Pass. I currently live within sight of Donner Pass. There is a park near my house which was their previous campsite, before attempting the pass. Good times!

Fun fact, my great grand uncle wrote the primary account of the Donner party. We didn't find out what had happened to him until the mid 90's during a doc on the natgeo channel

Literally 1 of every 5 conversations I had as a kid was about the Donner party. Cannibalism in general really.

I was never specifically taught about Donner Pass, in fact this is literally the first time I've ever heard the "pass" part or how many people were involved. I literally only gathered enough context from Donner Party jokes to know it was about people who had to eat each other for survival.

When I moved my dad from Phoenix to Petaluma in July 2022 we stopped at the Donner Pass rest area on I-80. Getting back in the moving van, my comment was that the exhibits were very informative but the selection of jerky at the snack bar was too limited given the locale.
