Vita Sackville-West was an English writer and gardener, born on March 9, 1892, at Knole House in Kent. She wrote 13 novels and many poems, winning the Hawthornden Prize twice. She was also the muse for Virginia Woolf’s novel “Orlando”. She had a column in The Observer for 15 years. She designed the famous garden at Sissinghurst Castle with her husband, Sir Harold Nicolson. She thought gardens should have emotional and narrative qualities. She came from a noble family, but could not inherit Knole because she was a woman. She felt lonely as a child and turned to writing. Her mother was the illegitimate daughter of a Spanish dancer and a baron. Knole was a gift from Queen Elizabeth I to her ancestors. Vita Sackville-West left a lasting mark on literature and horticulture with her life and work.
