@@saluki7651 yes Martha was convicted for insider trading on her first offense and still got jail time. No cases have been brought against the congress people you mentioned, but no doubt if cases were brought, members of both parties would be found guilty. Trump shouldn’t be exempt from jail time just because he wasn’t convicted on previous charges. He currently has more convictions than Martha and should be serving time in prison instead of getting special treatment.

The punishment Martha got for insider trading was 3 times the assets involved, which turned out to be a whopping $180,000 or so. She went to jail for lying to investigators. For that she got 3-5 months, I think and served less than 3, I think.

He should have been in prison on Jan 7, 2021.

No, they won't leave Trump, even if he loses. They left Bush even though Bush did a lot for them. They will never leave Trump, not because he did more for them, but because of how much they sacrificed for him. Abandoning him would mean admitting that to themselves.

You are not in uncharted waters. The law is perfectly clear. It prescribes that criminals be punished in accordance with set rules. None of them says presidents should be exempt. (The ultra vires invention by SCOTUS, only relates to civil cases.) Convicted felon takes precedence over former president. Good summary of the trial. But you have said nothing about the parade of contorted, specious excuses advocating corruption in sentencing, which would have made 1930s Germany proud. Mitigating factor is previous character, not previous convictions. You missed out his character is just about the worst possible. Fraudster, rapist, theft of documents, perversion of justice, bringing US into disrepute, etc etc. Presumably he is NOT on bail pending appeal. There are legal factors to be weighed, it's not what some journalist "presumes". Being in jail won't stop him being elected so that's not a reason. It will stop him from selling state secrets, absconding and further offending including inciting further violence and insurrection. Because his behaviour can be monitored to ensure he complies with the law.

No one is above the law. Period.

One of the jurors said that he/she primarily gets their news from Truth Social and Fox News, so you know they are a Trump supporter. I’ve never known a Democrat/Liberal to get their news from Truth Social. I went on a right-wing KZread channel where they were discussing the verdict and the comment section was wild. People straight up saying they were Democrats their entire lives but after hearing the verdict they’re voting for Trump, that they donated money to his campaign. Others saying they hadn’t planned on voting this year but now they’re definitely going to vote for Trump specifically because of the verdict. I can’t wrap my head around it. But this conviction was the smaller crime of falsifying business records to cover up another crime, so the sentence will be much lighter than what Weisselberg or Cohen got.

There should be equality under rule of law. Being convicted on fraud charges is really not surprising, if you look at Trump's history. What is surprising is how he has so successfully managed to delay, delay, delay on the federal court cases in Washington and Florida, with the help of his special friends and contacts. Petty white collar crimes are usually fraud crimes, and it's very reasonable for crimes of fraud to be prosecuted. Equality before the law. Weisselberg and Cohen were already prosecuted. The sentence will be small, which is appropriate for first time offender and being a pretty crime.

the appeals on two defamation trials, one appeal on business fraud 500 million in fines and appeals everywhere. trump sells a 10 million dollar cessna. 32 million a year in legal expenses appeal lawyers cost a lot more money. us moderates are tired exhausted of convict trump. live long and prosper.

A lot, unfortunately.

If the exact same circumstances or surrounding a trial, with somebody who the New York Times liked, they would find the conditions of this trial to be completely appalling. The ends don’t justify the means, you guys. Anybody guilty of a crime should be punished for it, but you simply can’t say that this particular trial done in this particular way, doesn’t smell to high heaven, even if Donald is guilty as sin. That doesn’t mean that this was not a deliberate political hit job done in a fashion that was incredibly corrupt. That matters. And what’s the alternative? The other guy is guilty of selling presidential influence worldwide. People that can’t stand Donald Trump really need to sit back and ask themselves why is it that a guy like that can actually end up being the president twice. It goes to show how deep the rot is in Washington. Seriously, do some soul-searching. Think about why a guy like Donald Trump ends up beating Washington. People hate Washington so much that they will take damn near anybody outside of it at this point. and no serious human being could look me in the eye and honestly tell me that Joe Biden is a good candidate for president. They just feel he’s better than Donald Trump. That doesn’t mean he’s any good though. What an absolute disgrace that these are the two that are put out there again.

Well, the GOP has been looking into charges against Joe for 4 years now and have yet to be able to come up with any evidence. That does not mean that they couldn't find some if given more time but so far they have nothing to go on. As for him being better than Trump you could say that he has done a world of good for the people of the United States in that we will be building chips in the United States now, the infrastructure bill is creating thousands of jobs and repairing our roads, bridges, water systems. He's expanding oil drilling, setting up charging for electric vehicles, has forgiven college debt which is out of control for thousands of students so they can concentrate on putting their money back in the economy instead of enrichening loan institutions such as Banks and other mortgage lenders. As an independent I'm going to vote for Joe again. All the nitpicking about his being able to speak is just that. Having overcome a stutter as a child he does a very good job and stays on point unlike trump.

I don't think Merchan's sentence will in any way take Trump out of the election outside of putting more gag orders that Cannon refuses to do. Merchan does not want Trump to keep spreading lies which endanger law enforcement. I think Merchan may give Trump a chance to show some remorse by shutting his big mouth with certain lies. He may require Trump to apologize for attacking the FBI.

Biden needs to campaign hard on economic issues. The fact is that inflation will increase under Trump's planned 10% tariff on all imported goods and deporting millions of agricultural workers. Undecided voters are not going to be swayed by anything other than bread and butter issues and I can't believe Democrats haven't figured that out yet

That's a chilling thought...Trump in office with a jail sentence awaiting him when his term ends. Now there's a real incentive to not leave office.
