you actually have to do that so that the wax warms up and sticks to the hair, otherwise the strip wont work as well.

Bonk is definitely not uniquely synonymous with 3D Mario - the word has been used since at least the 50s, and even been popular in gaming for platforming and action adventure games (Contra, Zelda, etc). It's onomatopoeia for getting hit on the head.
