If JUMP by Van Halen Was Written For Millennials (Acoustic Alt-Pop Indie Rock Cover)
Музыка
We all know the iconic synth line, but I had never really given this song a proper listen all the way through until I decided to do this cover. I loved the idea of slowing the verses waaay down and letting each line breathe, while keeping the upbeat pace of the prechorus intact. I love the layers that pop in and out, and I'm really digging my new shooting methods that allow me to do longer takes with video. Hope you enjoy!

Same! But, it was a Walkman on my hip. I would walk to and from school with it, take it to basketball games on the bus and let all the kids who wanted to listen enjoy whatever cassettes we could bring with us - I took it everywhere. I did graduate to a two cassette player boombox in high school and made customized tapes for friends with spliced guitar solos (mostly) or weird and compatible parts of songs spliced together I knew my friends could appreciate (also made tapes that only had whole songs or albums🤪). Cover the top of that TDK blank with Scotch tape and press record…man, those were the days. And, spinning albums backwards just to drive the parents crazy. ❤🥁🎸🤘

This is my favorite way to hear a cover... updating a great song to a more current aesthetic. That's exactly what Van Halen did back in the day on their early days with songs like Dancing in the Street, Pretty Woman, and You're No Good.

This proves that well written songs can be translated into any genre.
At first I was thinking it was ruined, but then the longer I listened I began to enjoy it. It was actually very well done. Much talent on display.
I feel like this would play during that part of my favorite early 2000s movie about a local band, where the band splits up because of a simple misunderstanding that could have been avoided if they just talk to each other. The scene ends with two of them meeting up (as the song ends) a few months later. Everything works out at the end. They play the big show.

Luke warm generic, neutered, completely non threatening to the status quo … any status quo? Non-threatening to anyone but the past, that can’t really fight back. Awful.You know kids … even white working clsss kids … it’s ok to be angry about your economic distress … just direct it where it belongs. Like your uncles Karl and Bernie say … it’s ok to be angry about the excesses of capitalism. Just keep your working class consciousness strong and inclusive. Van Halen were working class under all that hair, spandex, testosterone and awesome guitar … Dave even sang about his uncle’s union tattoo. No we don’t need this. This is an example of succumbing to the worst ( of the non-committal rebooting reimagining alt-universe) post-modern impulse. The ultimate challenge: to take someone else's lyrics, and make the same words evoke new, different emotions. I used to hear this song, and think of DLR doing jump splits off of a drum riser, wearing zebra spandex. With Alex's version, I think of someone willing to take a risk, and jump into a relationship. THAT'S TALENT. Very well done, Alex.

I was in the Marines in the mid eighties. At the time I was a Sergeant. There was a woman Marine on top of a building on base having an episode. She was threatening to jump off of the building. Some of the younger Marines got a boom box and were playing the Van Halen song "Jump". They were yelling "Go Ahead and Jump!". I was disgusted by this, because I thoroughly knew these types. They are the types who think their tough, and go out in town and get drunk, look for whores, and start fights. There are some good connotations to this song. Suppose a sky-diving video? But the overall energy of EVH was recklessness and rebellion. Their mantra was "Sex, Drugs, Rock-n-Roll". How did that play out?

I was 16 years old when 1984 dropped, and I stood in line at the record store the day it came out. Jump was my favorite track on the album. We tried to cover it in my band, but we weren't that good and I couldn't seem to get the lyric to fit to the meter no matter how many times I tried. I just want to say that I love this version, probably more than the original. I don't think we need any labels for this version. Stanley Kubrick might have said, "Sometimes the truth of the thing is not so much in the think of it, but in the feel of it." The meaning, the lyrics of this song, are reframed here in a way that makes it feel so much more honest, more genuine, and more vulnerable than I ever imagined it to be. I felt that. Thank you.
@Limited_Light
3 ай бұрын
I was also 16. I don't think many of our fellow fans would have mentioned Kubrick, then or now. It was hard enough to get them to understand, "I'm home. You maniacs! You blew it up! Awww, damn you! Damn you all to hell!". Maybe that explains why I started gravitating to some of the more cerebral rock and metal?
