@@NoOne-kr4jc I love Free and Paul Rodgers, they are my favorite rock band bar none. Like the Small Faces they were heavily influenced by US soul music and were all tiny 5 footers. Worth pointing out that Paul Rodgers was very partial to a punch up in the 60's and early 70's so he may have got into it with Marriott at some point. Ken Harrington .......yes absolutely, (I wasn’t taking a thing away from either man, always loved both) but Marriott was in a class of his own, it’s said he *never* missed a note. It was crooked management that prevented The Small Faces from being far bigger than they should have been, dreadful shame. I’ve since listened to Robert Plant’s version but didn’t care for it at all. For me, it’s Tim Hardin’s original or the magical Marriott versions that have the most depth of feeling. Did you know Steve’s daughter Mollie inherited her dad’s voice? She has an album called Truth Is A Wolf, she’s terrific. If you don’t know her, just google Mollie Marriott, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Marriott's passionate vocal delivery, as well as his, and the band's playing, breathes life into a song that when performed as written, limps along like a dying ________ (please feel free to fill in the blank. Let's make this interactive, if you will. Lol.). Tim Hardin wrote so many great songs, but "Carpenter" is one I never cared for, until hearing this version. My God they were good. With PP Arnold a supergroup. Why is exuberance so rare in recorded music, this cat was freakin' LOVING being a rock and roll star!
never knew they covered this..wow..fantastic..once again Steve knocks it out..i love his range and rough edge...these guys were stellar...eff you HOF voters..
I saw Humble Pie back in the 70s and Steve played the hell out of his guitar and harmonica and put out the most incredible live singing performance i ever heard

What a voice this man had. The era has to include this great band.
Mariott has this unmisstakable voice that gives a special magic to whatever he sings, and yes this is one of those tracks that hes made sound fantastic.
One of few songs that you could say is better than the original. What a voice and what a presence this band had.

What a singer and musician was Steve Marriot, after Small Faces he lead another great band Humble Pie
Bombastic, Who-like treatment of a folk song. One of those covers that stands up to and even surpasses the original. Not too many of those. Great musicians, all 4 of them

This is the first time I have heard this version of one of my favourite songs of the genre and it's terrific. That decade was so rich with talent - not like now. Stevie what a singer.
What a song!! Long live The Small Faces!!
Marriot has a very distintive voice and no one has come even close to it. fantastic version of a great song.

Best voice in Rock n Roll. Literally.
I keep coming back to this cover....one of my ever-favourites. These small islands have influenced the world with the brilliance of its musicians. Steve Marriot especially and the Small Faces are up there with the best.
listened to these witn my dad with my kids now my grandson asks to play them . sign of good music never gets old
Simply incredible. This took my breath away.
Steve Marriott could sing the ABC's and have a million seller!
Awesome , Steve really rips it and with such feeling
Had the honour of seeing the Small Faces live at St. Albans Market Hall in 1965, absolutely brilliant. RIP Steve & Ronnie
Whoever it was who commented that Plant should have sung this 20 years ago, I'm not sure it would have made any difference. Robert Plant whilst a powerful voice, simply didn't have that which Marriott did - SOUL, beautiful SOUL. RIP Steve and Ronnie.

Most of the comments on here refer to SM's awesome vocals and how could you not agree.
What a voice!!!
Steve could sing the phonebook and it would still be full of soul!
Excellent version, one of my faves.
That voice just cuts through me like a knife
Ohhhh was für ein super Gänsehaut- Song ! Danke Theseeker 23
Marriott's vocals are awesome, must be one of the best front men of all time.
"Black Napalese, it's got ya weak in the knees" , Marriott, we need another one!
In my opinion one of the most under rated groups ever, Ogdens Nut Gone Flake round album cover hooked my eye, the music changed my mind , and turned me ON , that was early seventies , their music is like a drug to me , when down, i listen to it and i'm on top again . Many Thanks to the Small Faces.

Howler Monkey .......I adored pretty much everything Steve did but imo, Ogden’s is a rare gem. So often I read detrimental comments regards Stanley Unwin’s “gobbledegook” story-telling but I love everything about the album. It’s great fun so I can well understand it lifting your spirits.
@ MrJayGossman......Oh, you put it perfectly. This man's incredible, soulful voice takes me right "into the moment". I too have spent well over 40 years listening to this and so much other wonderful music, but it's Stevie Marriott's voice that wins every time, hands down. RIP Steve and Ronnie.

Undoubtedly the best rock and roll vocalist ever IMNSHO
IMHO...The greatest version, EVAH!!!! Heaven Rocks On With Steve's Beautiful, Soulful Voice. His voice gives me chills.
@ Ken Harrington....I adore Steve's voice and Ronnie's harmonies were beautiful. Steve oozed soul, a most unique voice. Apart from Plant and Rodgers, there was of course Roger Daltrey. All great, powerful rock singers, but then there was Stevie. I know his voice takes me places the others never did. RIP boys.

Steve made this song his - His talent can’t be matched to this day -The Small Faces were the greatest talent of all time
This band was criminally ignored here in the U.S. by the music press. Marriott was one of the greats, a shame he never received his due.
Kick ass vocals... awesome.
Listening again Steve's amazing voice❤👍.
The Small Faces and Steve in particular are fucking amazing! They were several years ahead of their time in terms of their total sound. Fantastic!
Words can't describe haw fantastic this is!!!!!
Best version I've EVER heard anywhere. Steve Marriott best 60s vocalist by a long mile. Superbio
Marriott could defoe sing the socks off Robert Plant........................I love Zepplin, but this guy can sing !!.

Ha ha ha, ''parochial British whimsy''? The ''scale of Zeppelin'' ? Oh, the myriad levels of wrongness, especially with that first one, and especially about *this* song. You, Sir, have just shown yourself up as an ignorant fool. Or, to use parochial British whimsical terminology: 'a right berk'.

Steve Marriott .......there will never be another. How blessed we all are , our generation to have his haunting voice play through our heads.
Wish I could buy this version... ☹️
I am not making any comparisons with any other songs......Small Faces forever!
Steve Marriott = One of the most underrated soul singers and Small Faces most overlooked band. Sit, listen and learn children!
i just love this song and cant stop listening to it :-)
I remember in the 80s I went to school with this really cool white kid and father was this hippy lawyer who spent a lot time traveling but he allowed us to listen to his records. My friend and I smoked a joint and he played this song and man was I blown away. Really miss the 80s it was such a cool time.
Very good version !
The Small Faces were one of the best bands of the 60s. Great sound
Hello - I wish Steve was still around. I saw the Small Faces in 1965 - I was 15 - at Taunton, Somerset, England. At the end I rushed outside and was feet away as Steve and the rest got into their car and I watched Steve in the back as the car pulled away. Never forgotten, have all the singles and some LP's have listened to them all my life - I am now 58 - I still miss Steve Marriott!!!! Alison
a most awesome and under-rated band.
@Lichtenstein 1961......Oh yeah, Stevie Marriott could belt them out. Was always one of my favourite vocalists. RIP Steve.

Classic, Marriot so influential to many.
One of the greatest voices in my book pure magic.
This of course was played live, it shows how absolutely pitch perfect Steve was. Steve had never been known to miss a note. I have followed the SF since 1965 and never get bored of their wonderful music. It is a pity there are not more videos of them !!!

@Bunny Warren There is a DVD from the Reelin' In The Years series called The Small Faces All Or Nothing 1965 to 1968 and there are 27 complete performances of them filmed for various TV shows both in UK and abroad - if that's any help to you. There's also interviews with all 4 of them from different times - it's great to watch!
I always thought Bobby Darin's rendition was the gold standard until I heard Steve Marriott and the rest of this underappreciated band do this incredible song. I am beginning to believe that maybe the greatest injustice in my life was that the work of this group was not made available to those of us in the States as was the Stones, Beatles etc. I feel so cheated.
ABSOLUTELY 'THE' BEST version i've ever heard of this great song. Vocals are fabulous love it .Would give some elses right arm to have current music like this.TREMENDOUS.
pure unadulterated vocal, preach it to me brother!
Love this version
ardellefly hehe nice awakening to experience the brilliance of this band :-). I was like you some time ago...knew Steve only from Humble Pie. When you put these two pieces together (SF and HP) it's so clear that this guy is incredibly underrated, an unsung LEGEND in my eyes really.
Oh, how love Steve Marriot!!! I loved being able to keep up with his strong notes as a teenager!!! Yeaaaahyeaaaaahhhh from one of his Humble Pie tunes got my full attention!! I still remember when I discovered he was the same singer as on Itchycoo Park, I was just giddy over making the connection!
Thank the Lord for the variety in music...otherwise we would all starve
Fantastic is right !!!
What a voice! Beyond words!
How fantastic were this bunch of creative youngsters, absolutely magic and not truly recognised for their unique and inspiring enthusiasm for a new direction musically and fashion acceptance. I am so clad they were of my ilk!
Damn, so glad I stumbled across this video. This insipid song so desperately needed the Small Faces. Thank you, Small Faces, for making this song enjoyable. The end.
RIP Mac ✌
WOW, goosebumps! I sure do miss the amazing Steve Marriott, his voice takes me back to the sweet innocence of my youth discovering music from across the pond. I've been hooked ever since!
The Small Faces did a GREAT version- and I love the DJ inroduction- it's alterNAtely RAW and beautiful- WOULD YOU?
One of the greatest mysteries of all time - how the hell did Stevie Marriott hit those high notes??!! A definite case of the shiver up the spine - gawd bless yer Stevie!!
this song has reached so deep it pulled tears out that I didn't know existed

The greatest vocals bar none
I got their big black 12-inch vinyls in the 60s, and later their CDs in the 80s, now a released DVD
Just 3 words 'an amazing voice'
raw as fuck i love it
And Robert Plant did this same tune many moons after...a very excellent and haunting rendition of this classic tune. Plant idolized Steve...and this rendition by SF is very tasty...I only wish I could have seen Marriott live.
