Not 100% - the image of a lobbyist secretly handing the politician money directly is a red herring that for years kept me from acknowledging that a campaign contribution out in the open is also a bribe.

Except that Congressmen don't issue logging permits. Issuing permits is a function of the executive branch. So it would be more accurate if he bribed the secretary of the Interior, because the secretary of the interior supervises the bureau of land management, or the secretary of agriculture, because they oversee the U.S. Forrest service.

Not sure why they can't plant a few new trees as they cut the old ones down. It's called sustainable logging, that way your successor still has forests they can cut down without travelling around the globe. Ultimately cuts down on long term costs. 😉

That’s a great suggestion, really - but then, y’know, there’s the issue of _hiring_ people who do that sort of thing, having them go out and _survey_ the land to find out just what type of trees we’re cutting down and just how many _we_ have to purchase to make up for it - and all the while our guys are sitting back, drinking coffee and eating donuts on company time, that sort of thing. It’s a _lot_ more efficient to just clear-cut the land and move on from there, you know? Thanks for your suggestion, though- we’ll keep it in mind.

Not sure if this is the origin of it, but I know in charades it's how the person miming a phrase indicates someone guessing got it correct. From what I've seen, outside charades it's generally used as a playful way of saying "you guessed right".

Bush Jr. was really hated for everyone outside of the United States because he was a kid with a machine gun. Before being president, Trump was inoffensive to the average Joe because he was just a dumb celebrity, but if I make a joke about him people would attack me immediately even if the joke is child stuff because people still treat the president as All Mighty (not a coincidence, politics steals a lot from religion) when in reality he is just another public service guy.

Maybe not clear cutting, but definitely need to spend more time and money clearing out dead and diseased trees, heavy undergrowth, and excessive fuel loading from our forest lands. If we're not willing to do that, then we shouldn't be spending any resources putting fires out when they are started.

@@daFuqDay yes, I’m well aware it means you elect representatives to represent you in the chambers of government, but you can absolutely not argue whatsoever that the makeup of congress represents the people of this country in any satisfying way, and their overwhelming white, male and geriatric make up is a large part of that.

just curious, but has an increase in the number of female senators resulted in an improvement in governance? has the US government been able to perform better with more female senators in power? only then can you possibly say that an increase in female senators is a change for the better.

And Trump's, and Obama's, Bush Jr's, Clinton's, Bush Sr's, Reagen's, Carter's, Ford's, Nixon's, and on and on. Starting to think a society built for the benefit of the propertied class is gonna turn out fundamentally corrupt!
