I'm German, so my school system taught me A LOT about how Institutions fail, how fast the social contract completely fails or changes. I mean, that congress is partisan is nothing new, but the failure of SCOTUS to intervene with this clear threat is atrocious. Sure, they are partisan hacks as well, but they aren't idiots, they know of the Nuremberg-Lawyer-Trials. Apropos, presidential immunity is nothing good - Hitler had it, Yeltsin got it. France prosecuted their former president, Italy also at least one, and I would argue the Nuremberg-Trials where significant parts of the Wehrmacht and Nazi government were convicted to incarceration or death had a good deterrent effect. Being able to hold your most powerful accountable is a feature of functioning democracies.
