I'm not much of a fan of Spears, and feel most of her output was dreck, mostly because her work is usually taking a poor song and tarting it up for sizzle and the steak, so they aren't great. But Toxic is truly a great and clever song. I'll gladly die on that hill!

I find the problem with this is that it never lets up. The best AIC songs have heavy and light(er) moments. With a verse/pre-chorus/chorus structure, one of those should be let up to emphasize the impact of the others... and to make the song sound like it wasn't just the same thing all the way through. It doesn't have to be a contrast as large as, say, "Angry Chair" or "Would?", but just SOMETHING. A missed opportunity, in my opinion, given that they're solid on the sound that they're going for.

@@bensolo7217 it's Duvall-era Alice. Not that William doesn't have his own "Yeahs", but you're likely looking for Layne's trademark. The band not trying to replace Layne, but rather taking their sound in a slightly different direction, is what has allowed them to continue. By not finding a soundalike fill-in, Layne is still present through his absence, if that makes any sense.

Sitting in a Toxic Chair... This is fantastic. You NAILED the harmonies. All this is missing is a bit of Layne's trademark vibrato, without it, you're at a 9.9/10.

This was pretty clearly intended to sound like Duvall-era Alice. And he did indeed nail it perfectly. That nagging feeling of something missing, while simultaneously still sounding perfect, shows that they picked the correct new (not replacement) vocalist for the job.

Sounds like something that would fit right in on their ‘95 self-titled album. Pairs pretty damn well with “Grind” (even the title sounds like an Alice in Chains song)

I've always thought some Britney's songs could be grunge as hell. Thx for this!

@@pickyyeeter Totally missed that, but I was going on the riffage, guitar tone, vocal tone, harmonies, and style. Vocally, he's clearly going for Duvall, and the guitar tuning is clearly DGCFAD rather than Eb etc. Very clearly new AiC. Clearly, I use the word "clearly" a lot in this comment.

I usually hate vids like this but I gotta say, you nailed it. Those vocals are spot on and great rhythm. I think Alice would have thrown a couple more licks in there though.

You are right, but not only early 2000s, I feel people sleep on just how dark and foreboding a lot of pop songs can be once you strip down the bright production. Songs like Total Eclipse of the Heart, True Colors, Summer breeze, Maneater, Spice Up Your Life, and a bunch of others. Even the lyrics sometimes are supposed to be positive, but if they were over a heavy and dark sound could easily be interpreted as menacing. Foreeever is gonna start tonight!! (You are gonna die)

Globally, the poppier the song, the more likely it's about sex, drugs, death, or other dark af stuff. This is a personal observation from decades...nothing official 😅. One of my favorite japanese rock bands, has many pop-style sings that about death

Holy hell, I wasn’t ready for this…it’s absolutely incredible 🤯, I’m out of words! 🖤 The lyrics suprisingly fit the whole piece so good, as if this track was composed (and waiting) for such arrangement - which gave it a completely different, deeper meaning. I bet if Alice in Chains had it in their discography, it would be one of their top songs. And I hope they will find this masterpiece👌. Chepau bas, man. As an absolute fan of Alice in Chains music, I cannot stop listening to this! And I'm really impressed with how you could capture the atmosphere of the specific psychedelic and heavy sound, while giving a tint of your own to it at the same time.
