Something to note: from an actual pilot. When an error in an airplane model is detected, the company does an assessment of threat to human life to cost of replacement analysis. They average the cost of a human life to about 2 million bucks each. If the replacement cost of the part on their entire fleet would be more than an average loss of x human lives over x number of years, they don't replace it. It's cheaper to just pay for the part when it fails and pay the families of the lost members when life is lost. True story.

Airlines suffer BADLY from reputation loss after fatality accidents. Fear of flying is far greater than the real risk of flying, making airlines more risk-averse in terms of safety than most any other business. It shows in the numbers. Per mile, the safest way to move over the Earth is by airliner. Ships and trains fall well short, while cars, bikes, and walking don't even deserve to be in the same conversation. The most likely place for an air-travel fatality to happen is on the taxi ride to the airport.

Oh, and if you want to reschedule your flight, we'll charge you a fee worth more than half the cost of your ticket. But we can reschedule the time your plane takes off by several hours, and you don't get any refund or discount from us - even if we reschedule multiple times before the day of the flight.

This video is more true now than it was since the new TSA regulations. I wish Rodger, would do the pre-take-off announcements in a video. It would be both hilarious and a little concerning, being on a plane before it takes off after hearing that. I'd flown enough times to confirm that Rodger is absolutely correct about this.

These 'if X were honest' ads are always pretty snarky and self satisfied, but at least for the most part they undercut an established ideal or concept to highlight its absurdity, and that it's mere existence is dependant on our blindly following their manipulative advertising and cultural ideals (diamond engagement rings, energy drinks etc). On that count, this one fails miserably, yeah in modern life we need to be somewhere only a plane will get us to on time/we're prepared to deal with the inconvenience of an airport/aeroplane for the privilege of visiting/working.living in another country - pretty small price to pay compared with buying a fucking plane or walking there ffs.
