Hi Clemwell, Quality of answers, mainly. Her responses are excellent, but perhaps some more complex phrasings could have given her a 9.0. These are not points to worry about, however, unless you are aiming for 9.0. Instead, focus on the strategies and skills you need to master to get your goal score (for most students, this is 6.5-7.5).

Thank you very much for responding. I never anticipated such fast yet informative response. Yes, I aim for a 9 because I plan to be an IELTS instructor here in the Philippines. Having watched the video twice, I agree that her sentences were quite basic, however smooth and flawless they were. So I'll definitely take note of the complexity of syntax. Thanks again!!! =)

One of our IELTS student asked us today why a native speaker in one of our IELTS Speaking section training videos did not receive a 9.0 score (she received an 8.5 instead). Here was our response: The main reason this student did not score 9.0 was the quality of her answers. Her responses are excellent, but perhaps some more complex phrasings could have given her a 9.0. A big point to note here, however, is that these reasons do not matter! These are not points to worry about unless you are aiming for 9.0. If you are at a 5.5 level and attempt to implement the complex phrasings that would have given this student a 9.0, you will not be successful! Why? Because you need to build up to this skill level. Prematurely attempting to do "too much" in the speaking section will result in a lower score. Instead, focus on the strategies and skills you need to master to get your goal score (for most students, this is 6.5-7.5). Here is the video in question: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qpWe0KyDZ5m5aZc.html For more IELTS help, visit www.aehelp.com

+AcademicEnglishHelp I had 9 for Speaking a couple of years ago, but I now need to re-take the test. Obviously, it would be a shame to get anything lower than 9. The fact that a native speaker managed to somehow get a 8.5 is hugely discouraging, though I can quite see that her answers were a little simplistic.

Highest band score is not only for native speakers. I took the academic IELTS in June, and scored 8.5 with speaking. I am a non-native speaker, and living the whole my life in non-english speaking places in Africa & Asia. Non-native speaker, you can manage scoring the highest band as long as you are careful, structured, and know what you are speaking druing an interview.

they wanna be a nurse or a doctor. Doctors must achieve an overall score of 7.5 (out of 9), with a minimum 7.0 in the four papers. Nurses must achieve and overall score of 7.0 with a minimum 7.0 in the four papers. There is no room for error on the test day. Scoring 7.0 at IELTS is no different to achieving an A at A Level or scoring highly in an undergraduate exam.

Cause i've never seen one in my life. and i don't have any interest in it. Hi all! Just wanted to share my experience with you because I feel like a lot of us are really nervous when it comes to taking the speaking test. It is quite nerve wrecking but you can do it! I got a 9 in speaking and 8.5 overall. Test was taken in Canada. I've spent quite some time here so I speak like a native speaker, but like what the comment says not all native speakers can get a 9 as you have to show a certain level of expertise on your topic. You need to be articulate and show no difficulty in conversing on something scientific/factual. What really separates an 8.5 from a 9 is precision and clarity of thought. If you just talk in every day speech it won't get you anywhere; you gotta be precise and make sure what you say really hits the nail on the head. Think before you speak! Good luck!

luvfaye lee I think you should focus on being articulate, as in you need to be coherent and precise and try not to say a bunch of words when only one of them accurately conveys the meaning for you. I had exams when I took the test but I thought I at least needed to familiarize myself with the format---which I did, but I also made sure whatever I said I wouldn't have said it any other way, as in it mirrored my thoughts perfectly as if I was thinking out loud. Precision is key!

I like this video as I often use it to teach my students preparing for IELTS here in Hong Kong. Though Jade Lake would not have scored so high if it were a Geography test. Looking at a map of Canada, the Westernmost Province is Yukon, not British Columbia!

Hello, I just received my IELTS Indicative test results and my scores were as such. L=8.5, R=9, W=7.5, S=7. Overall = 8. I am a bit disappointed with my Speaking score are I have been speaking in english all my life. :( However, thank you very much for the videos. I only used to watch your videos to prepare and I hardly prepared for a week. I also referred the booklet I received from IELTS for preparation. Thank you again for helping me get a general idea of what the format of the test is and how to answer each section. The tips were great too! Thank you again! I am very happy with my overall score!

I've been an English speaker all my life so I'm actually a bit disappointed with my speaking scores. It wasn't difficult but the topic I was given was something I didn't have much knowledge about. So I wasn't prepared and did end up saying something silly. Maybe that's why the low score. But I expected more. Reading is actually tough. That's what I said after my test. The passages are quite difficult so I spent a lot of time cross checking my answers so it helped. For listening, being alert is the key. Normally I read a lot of novels so that helped, maybe u should do that too. And for listening, listen to news particularly British speakers coz if u aren't familiar with the accent it might be extremely difficult. Good luck.

Maybe u just can invent stories about thinks being asked (no matter u don´t know the topic) for next time!, examiners may don´t care about wheter is true or false at all but ur skills, that´s it ; (remember what Einstain said: imagination is more important than knowledge!) what other tips u know to get good results at reading band?, Btw: i usually get so nervous at exams, just like if i were beeing sat close to a sexy lady, ja ..!

My topic was actually which famous indian personality inspires u. I needed to state facts I believe. My tips for reading won't be of much help since I'm an avid reader and as a kid I read books which were beyond my vocabulary of that age. I usually read classic novels. The most I could suggest is to improve your vocabulary n learn new words because you will come across many unfamiliar words in the examination. As you move from one passage to the other it gets tougher. I first read the questions and then read the passage so I knew which sentences to look out for. And I took special care when I found the answer. Cross checking helped me immensely. And the last thing would be not to stress your mind too much. Else u might screw up. If u feel Ur getting stressed do some deep breathing. :)

Unlike many websites out there, we fill this section with real user testimonials and real pictures of those users. Because of your awesome score and feedback, we'd love to be able to use your first name/picture. If you could send us a picture of yourself (face, like the ones on the website), we would be greatly appreciative. Also, please include your nationality. If you are willing, please send this to admin@aehelp.com. This allows us to encourage other students to use our products and reach their goals and dreams. I look forward to getting your picture, nationality, and I wish you the best in your future endeavors.

I don't really get the IELTS Test. Why is it so important to use complex words? I mean, is there a difference between the General Training and the Acedemic speaking test? If no, why do you need complex words for the everyday life? Isn't it just important, that you can understand each other? If you live in a english speaking country after the test, you will automatically improve your english.

You don't need to be better than someone to score them based on a (mostly) objective set of rules. Also, this is literally an exam that lasts for a few minutes where you are supposed to give your very best shot at speaking as coherently and as clearly as you can. Almost no one will speak like that in most situations, simply because those situations don't require it.

Why do all of the English learners always say if asked them what do you like to do or what do you think about art or music etc. all of them start to say; I love art and especially modern arts, galleries etc. I had seen a famous musician who played on the street as a street guitarist on youtube but everyone didn't look at him. I know lots of them who are love music especially classical music when you ask them. Well, why do people prefer to say like this? Because, I think we learn the English like this way. So when the English learners start speaking English we have become art, music and social life lovers. Finally, I watched lots of exam videos nearly all of them make imitation. These are in my opinion. I'm so sorry if I say unpolite speech. note: I am sorry for my bad English. I'm only B1

This is a very common situation. First, remember that the person who is doing the interview does not mark you, so don't be scared. They are just there to ask you the questions. The people marking will listen to the recording, so be loud and confident otherwise they can't hear you! Think of the examiner as a grandpa or grandma who you have to speak to clearly, loudly and respectfully. Great question. I hope this helps. Lots more strategies at: www.aehelp.com

AcademicEnglishHelp "Live and learn". The sageness of this proverb has never been so appealing to me, as it is now when i have to pass IELTS exam. Well, I`d like to get grade 7, but there are several things i`m lacking, to get that result. Generally speaking, my speaking abilities aren`t "native" enough, much less to say about my pronunciation, and my writing skills are rough to the degree that i`d hardly ever be capable of writing a well organized and grammatically precise essay, to convince the examiner that i deserve a mark higher than 6. Nevertheless i have convinced myself that i`m capable of improving my English and getting as higher a result as it is possible for any human being. To conclude, i`ve been watching the tutorials on this channel for quite a time, and i`d say, it has definitely helped me a lot. Now i know my weak sides which i need to improve and thanks to the channel i know which direction to tread.

Not true! In fact many native speakers are not able to score 9. This is because the mark isn't simply based on pronunciation, but much more on accuracy of language and information. These two elements do not depend much on being a native speaker, but rather on being an efficient communicator. This is why it is critical to develop strong communication skills to get high scores on IELTS speaking. Study hard, and you will get there. Good luck from the team at www.aehelp.com

+Pabindu lakshitha Hi Pabindu, no you cannot. If you get a question like this, just for three minutes, pretend that you love art and are very interested in it. Make up a story.

AcademicEnglishHelp I apologize but that is the most ludicrous thing i ever heard. So you are given 1 minute to think of a topic you do not like or know and you have to lie and make yourself believe that you actually like it to talk about it for 1-2 minutes? Wow

  • @MalrexMontresor

    @MalrexMontresor

It's not BS guys. It's great practice in real life. There are plenty of situations where you'll have to lie or pretend you like something that you in fact have no interest in. For example, at a dinner with the boss when he's talking about his yacht. If you roll your eyes and say you don't like boats or the ocean, you won't have a job for long. (And yes, many executives are exactly that vapid in real life, they don't care how "skilled" you are). People like people who share similar interests. That's why being able to pretend to share those interests can help your career. It's a useful skill to be able to fake enthusiasm and talk effectively about a topic you do not like or know about. With enough practice, you'll be able to "wing it" on just about any topic and give people the impression of being a Renaissance Man. And that will do wonders for your future job prospects (as long as you aren't totally incompetent at work).

Yeah, how does a native speaker "simulate" an 8.5 or 9. Ridiculous. An educated native speaker is "off the charts" so to speak, so this sort of "acting" isn't particularly relevant to ELL's. Let's see an actual learner who scored in this band - though granted they're hard to come by.

Although the colloquial language you are using in these comments is good tongue and cheek, just make sure you can use a more sophisticated intelligent form of communication when you take the test. Remember, not only are you what you eat, but you are what you speak.

Native speakers sometimes need to take the IELTS exam as well, as it is a proficiency exam, most native speakers would score a band 8, so preparing with the right materials is key, you can do that here: www.aehelp.com/full-course/
