    Great Video! The only thing I disagree with is that the candidate can't make ANY grammar mistakes. While i agree that mistakes should be very infrequent, to say that someone at Band 7 would produce error free grammar is a bit unrealistic. Otherwise, very good video with good pointers.

  • @kathleenanne7868

    There may be errors. I think you misunderstood him. Band 8 requires frequent error-free sentences. So if a Part 2 answer consists of 12 sentences, than 6 or 8 of them should be fault free. You can still make multiple mistakes in the rest of the answer.

    Six to seven is a big step. Make sure you have a plan for all the four scoring areas (fluency, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation). To get seven, you need to be strong in at least three out of four of these.

    Hey, I had my first IELTS exam on first of december and took all the sections including speaking on the same day. However, I think that it didn’t pass that good thus I’d like to be informed by you according to what I’d done. I didn’t say “ahh uhh” or else and answered the questions directly as they’re questioned. On the contrast, I didn’t build my sentences, entailing 1 or 2 tiny word repetitions very quickly, sometimes slowly. Besides, I made a number of self-corrections. Nevertheless, I used a good vocabulary and a good grammar, allowing my voice and words to be understandable. May these drawbacks have a dramatic impact on my band of speaking, in your opinion? Thanks.. (I am a 17-year-old foreigner candidate preparing for university. This is why I took IELTS.)

    Hi Doguhan, thanks for watching. It's hard to say exactly what would affect your score without speaking with you first and understanding your level and how you might have responded. Thanks for the comment! A simple sentence means a sentence with one clause, meaning that there's one subject and one main verb only. For example, 'Smoking is bad for your health,' is a simple sentence, because there's one subject ('smoking'), and one main verb ('is').

    Totally agree! I just got my results and how surprised I was to see that I have scored 7 in everything but the speaking, where I scored only 6. I was happy for my other results and confident that I could improve quickly my speaking skills and and try again. However, after this video I feel that I have no chance at all of achieving my goal before months of hard studies and a huge amount of money. Although, I'm going to start using his tips right now. Good luck for us all!

    good advice overall. better just listening instead of watching the video. one point is not sensible: if the test is regarded as an entry for study programme admission and meant for non english native speakers pursuing studies in an academic environment, it really doesn't make sense that you say one shouldn't include formal and academic language, even not a few?

  • @Oxfordonlineenglish1

    @Oxfordonlineenglish1

    Hi Xiaofeng, thanks for watching. The important thing to note is the fact that 'you don't need to use academic language'. We didn't necessarily say you 'shouldn't'. It really depends on the situation! The main idea is for test-takers to avoid using academic and formal language that sounds unnatural because they think it will improve their score. If the situation calls for it, then you can certainly use language that will help you answer the question well. Hope this helps you!

    Hi Kelvin. You can try to think about what you know of the topic. You can use experiences from your family or friends, or even things you've seen on TV. They don't necessarily have to be your experiences, as long as you can use the phrases and vocabulary to respond appropriately. Hope this helps you!

    It depends on the situation. Examiners don't look for specific mistakes, but rather the pattern of mistakes. In general: 1) To get high bands (8-9) you can't make any repeated mistakes. You can make a few slips. 2) To get bands 6-7, you can't make many mistakes, and your mistakes shouldn't make it difficult to understand your meaning. 3) If you make a large volume of mistakes, or your mistakes make it difficult to understand what you're saying, then your grammar score would likely be band 5 or lower.

    What about slang? Can we use it?

  • @Oxfordonlineenglish1

    @Oxfordonlineenglish1

    4 жыл бұрын

    It depends on the word, Davronbek. Some slang can be considered very informal and even impolite. If it's a phrase you are familiar with and it enhances your speaking in the exam, then you can use it. However, it's not advisable to use slang just to use it. Hope that helps!
