Last month, I uploaded a Band 8 Mock Speaking Test with my friend Rashmi.
Since I posted it, my team has received hundreds of comments and emails letting us know how Rashmi could have done even better in Part 1!
Some of you offered excellent advice, but a lot of you also seemed confused or misinformed about what the IELTS examiner needs to see...
This video will help to clear your confusion by showing you the level of pronunciation, fluency, grammar and vocabulary you NEED to have if you wish to score a Band 7, 8 or 9 in IELTS Speaking Part 1.
We’ll cover:
- My Tips For IELTS Speaking Part 1
- Part 1 Sample Answer
- Feedback and Further Advice
Watch until the end to see the detailed feedback I’ll give Rashmi on the four criteria the examiners will use to mark your IELTS Speaking test:
1. Pronunciation
2. Lexical Resource
3. Grammatical Range and Accuracy
4. Fluency and Coherence
P.S. If these^ seem new to you - don’t worry. You can learn all about the marking criteria for IELTS Speaking here: www.ielts.org/-/media/pdfs/sp...

Chris’ Top Tips for IELTS Speaking Part 1:
💥 The questions will all be about you.
You shouldn't prepare memorised answers because you should already know how to talk about yourself.
💥 Don’t keep your answers too short.
Short answers do not give the examiners enough information. You can extend your answers by giving explanations or examples that help support your view.
💥 Don’t make your answers too long.
If you give a very long answer to a simple question, it can sound unnatural and may even sound like you are giving a memorised answer. Try to aim for 2-3 sentences for each response.
💥 Relax.
Try to approach the test the same way you would if you were talking to a real person, not an examiner or a computer. The more you talk like a human being, the more natural you
will sound and the higher your score will be in Part 1 of IELTS Speaking.
***
What to expect in the IELTS speaking test:
🎙️ Part 1 is all about YOU.
The examiner will ask you everyday questions about your life. Common topics for IELTS Speaking Part 1 include your job or studies, your hometown and your family. This will last around 4 minutes.
📄 Part 2 is sometimes called the ‘long turn’.
The examiner will give you a cue card with a given topic on it, alongside key points for you to discuss. You will also be given 1 minute to make some notes and prepare your answer and then you will be asked to speak for up to 2 minutes.
💡 Part 3 is more abstract.
This is your opportunity to develop your answers and discuss the issues brought up by the examiner. This section will be related to the topic you discussed in Part 2 and usually lasts 4-5 minutes.
***
Your questions answered:
❓Will using lots of idioms and phrasal verbs boost my score?
📚 Idioms and phrasal verbs can help boost your score for vocabulary… BUT ONLY IF YOU USE THEM CORRECTLY. Vocabulary is 25% of your total score for the speaking test - do NOT lower it by using idioms or phrasal verbs that you don’t fully understand :(
❓ Will my body language or appearance affect my IELTS Speaking score?
📚No, your body language and appearance are NOT important in the IELTS exam. They might help you feel more confident, but the IELTS examiner can’t examine anything other than your pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and coherence.
❓ Is it possible for me to score a Band 8?
📚 Yes! However, the average IELTS score is 5.5, so you need to work EXTRA hard to get a Band 8.
❓ Can I do a mock IELTS Speaking test?
📚 Yes, all of my students now get 2 full mock speaking tests with an IELTS teacher when they join my VIP Course. The course is CLOSED at the moment, but you can join the Waiting List here: bit.ly/2krScLE

I think many people would try to give false information in the 1st part of the Speaking test like about their job and etc. because they want to impress the examiner. But sticking to the true information regardless of what and how they are would help them be on the safe side as trying to provide false information to the examiner would lead them to be in a state where they have to gather a lot of information and organize them up in short time which is not a good approach at all.

In Part 1, most of the questions will be about yourself, so you shouldn’t really have to lie. However, there might be some things that you can’t remember. When this happens, you can simply elaborate with a few things that might not be true.

I only caught my mistake towards the end of the 2 minute mark and was able able to correct the mistakes then... anyone's idea will be hugely appreciated!

Use the tense that's appropriate to use for the context you're talking about; just like when you are talking normally. There is no specific tense you need to use.

Dear Chris, i have a problem of stammering ..what should i do?

  • @Ieltsadvantage

    @Ieltsadvantage

    4 жыл бұрын

A stammer can definitely make it more difficult for you to get a high score and you will need to work harder in the other areas to compensate for this. However, IELTS will also make an allowance for you as it is a medical condition. When you are booking your test, you should bring a medical certificate with you to show that this is the case and present it to the person you book your test with. IELTS will be able to offer you more time in the speaking test so that you can show what you're capable of besides having a stammer. If you need any help with your IELTS preparation, feel free to get in touch. We have a range of courses and services that will help you get the scores you need.
