When I was in middle school groups of white boys would chase me down the halls screaming “n***** f*****” because it would make me cry. Without fail. My parents and grandparents and great grandmother would sit me down and tell me stories of slavery, bigotry, misogyny, r*pe and dehumanization. That is what those words carry. I understand not all people realize this is what these words carry. So people are speaking out about it. That’s what this is about. That is the harm that was facilitated. The ignorance and the weaponization of language under the guise of apathy. I don’t mean to lecture. Im just disappointed in this take. I understand that hatred wasn’t Ian’s intention, but it is nice he is willing to take responsibility. 2016 KZread was awful for so many children of color and there was an impact. It all feels so counterproductive to undermine Ian’s apology and reflection. Him speaking on his turn to empathy is useful for people on the fence about things. i don’t understand charlie for this. Like i was on yt when this stuff was popular and other people didn’t feel like it was just ‘edgy’ humor. It wasn’t *acceptable* with a lot of the people at time so for him to act like it was just because it was common just feels really weird and dishonest. people probably didn’t criticize it as much back then because it felt pointless when you’d get dogpiled or worse for pointing it out

I'm a woman who likes idubbbz's content, and I have liked it since that time. I had never noticed that his fanbase was so bizarrely misogynistic until the Anisa thing started, it was shocking to me that he had to talk about it to his fans and tell them that sex work is fine (That's the situation I'm referencing here). Because before that I was just like you, thinking there was no harm being done, he was just being edgy and everybody understands that, right? Turns out he was breeding a very specific type of harmful human being who were his fans and even though I was his fan too, those people didn't even see me as a person. And all those fans assumed Ian was a racist, a mispogynist and a homophobe for real, not just "ironically", that's super dangerous. So yes the apology was very much justified and I am so glad he made it because I was always a fan and it's good to know that he is not a horrible person and has grew as a person.

I’m a female-born trans, bi, and autistic person who used to watch his content. My gf of the time would send me videos of his. The Tana video is where I drew the line. His defense of slurs made zero sense to me. Casual use of slurs was something I noticed people would act like wouldn’t hurt me but it was always a slippery slope to people then voting literally against my basic human rights. Or degrading me, assaulting me, kicking me out of my household. It was never just a word.
@amanda-uw3un

@@asmrtpop2676 yeah, I think I don't really have the same relationship with slurs as people who are American or have english as a first language (idk if that is your case but I'm assuming so). So when I watched that video it did seem like just edge to me, I didn't know how slurs are actually a big big deal in English. In my language (portuguese) we have very bad words but they don't have that weight, we don't really have completely forbidden words and usually those offensive words end up getting reivindicated by the group whose offense was directed to and they lose their strenght. Of course based on context you can absolutely use them in a very offensive way but there is no such thing as a "slur" the way you guys have. So now I get that that was in very bad taste but at the time I just interpreted the way I do in my language. I do completely believe he sees and understands the damage he did then, honestly, I appreciate it a lot. I'm also queer btw ^^

Because before that I was just like you, thinking there was no harm being done, he was just being edgy and everybody understands that, right? And all those fans assumed Ian was a racist, a mispogynist and a homophobe for real, not just "ironically", that's super dangerous. In my language (portuguese) we have very bad words but they don't have that weight, we don't really have completely forbidden words and usually those offensive words end up getting reivindicated by the group whose offense was directed to and they lose their strenght. @@Biggleboggles I swear charlie is way off target with this one. idubbbz clearly mentions that he realises it was foolish of him to think he had zero responsibility for the indirect consequences of his edgelord content, leaving it upto the teen audiences to be responsible about not using his content to validate their bigoted views. like it's genuinely admirable that he takes responsibility and apologises publicly like this and then charlie is all "technically you didn't have to" 😂

He's also probably scared that since he's only 30 this stuff will remain online forever so I'd he ever becomes mainstream popular again, those clips of him saying the N word will always haunt him, so I feel like he is pre-emptively addressing those , especially with creator clash becoming more and more popular, at some point he was going to have to face the music

Rare Charlie L. He missed the whole point of the video. Doesnt matter if it was coming from a racist place or not his words encouraged hatred. I dont think he resents his audience at all. I think he wishs he hadnt cultivated a group of people who think edgelord racism=funny not just his community because i do believe most of his viewers arent racist. Also a lot of the comments on his video are sharing their stories of how his content effected them. I would go read those if you want to see how the people affected feel.

If that's how iDubbbz truly feel, then he has every right to apologize. And it's up to the community that would be affected by his content who can truly accept or reject his apology. At the end of the day, the apology video is only for those who was negatively affected by his old content.

He’s just in damage control mode from banning froggy. This is how he’s furthering his justification for it. Nothing he said was that bad, he never called someone a slur. He literally only said the words to make fun of people who used them, or in a context where he was saying the words just to point out they shouldn’t have any power over people, and all words are okay to use, and only hateful intent is bad
