This video is linked from a post on the Precision Response Training blog that discusses how to get started in IDPA--from registration to safety procedures when attending the match, and including of course the basics of the gear and rules used in IDPA. to read the post in its entirety, and see the videos in the correct context.
First in a sequence of videos discussing the basic information needed to get started in the shooting sport of IDPA. This one is about the basic gear needed, and the most important rules about that gear.
Part II is about how scoring works in IDPA matches, part III discusses Tactical Priority for target engagements, and part IV talks about the official techniques allowed for reloads in an IDPA match.

    Thank you for this series. Both IDPA/IPSC do a poor job to explain the rules to not only newcomers, but people that are just curious and might be interested in getting into it (and don’t want to read a 30 page pdf with every single rule).

    I have my first IDPA next week. I have a M9 with decocker. After taken from holster and flipping the safety off, can I manually push the hammer down instead of a DA trigger pull?

  • @PrecisionResponse

    @PrecisionResponse

    2 жыл бұрын

    If you want to do so, yes, that it legal. ...that being said, I'd really suggest practicing that DA first pull. Being able to accurately hit that first shot from the draw DA without having to do anything else first (that changes your grip) and takes up time....is really going to make a difference.

    Hi! we are starting this activity with some friends and a discussion always arises regarding how many magazines a shooter from the SSP division can carry with him, as I understand it in the 2023 updated manual it says that the shooter can start the stage with 1 magazine inserted in the firearm and 2 additional in the pocket or magazine holder. Other colleagues indicate that since the capacity was changed to 15 rounds in SSP you can only have a total of 2 maximum magazine per shooter. Could you confirm if there are 2 or 3 magazines maximum for SSP? Thank you so much!

  • @PrecisionResponse

    @PrecisionResponse

    3 total--one in the gun, and two extra on body in some fashion. Rule 8.1.4.2: Divisions starting with 8 or more rounds in all loading devices are allowed to start with the loaded firearm plus two additional loading devices. There was no change to that rule even after the capacity rules for SSP changed, so it is still three total.

    If you wear prescription glasses, are over the glasses safety glasses required, or is the prescription eyewear acceptable?

  • @PrecisionResponse

    @PrecisionResponse

    2 жыл бұрын

    Required...no. (There is no specific requirement for a certain type of eye protection.) That being said, if you like your eyeballs in working order, you are REALLY going to want to have protective eyewear that actually covers all of your eye, plus has side protection. I'd _strongly_ suggest having actual eyepro, whether that means over-the-glasses eyepro, or eyepro with prescription inserts. The first time you are talking to someone on the range when a spatter of lead comes back from a steel popper and hits you in the side of the head, you'll know what I mean. :/

    So why is there a weight limit for pistols? They should allow CZ Shadow 2 for competition, I mean come PCC makes no sense at all, how can you conceal one?

  • @PrecisionResponse

    @PrecisionResponse

    2 жыл бұрын

    I do agree that for a sport where the founding principles, written directly in the rules, flat-out say "Participation in IDPA matches requires the use of handguns, holsters and other equipment suitable for concealed carry self-defense." and "Equipment that is designed with no application for daily, concealed carry is not permitted in this sport." ---the inclusion of PCC seems....odd. It actually makes a whole lot more sense in USPSA than it does in IDPA. But...whatever, it doesn't change what I"m shooting. And hey, people can have fun however they want. (For example, PCC in USPSA and Steel Challenge is a blast. :) ) And IDPA doesn't give out a high overall, after all. As for the Shadow 2---that gun was literally designed from the ground up for USPSA/IPSC competition purposes. Given that, I'm not surprised that it doesn't work out in IDPA, with IDPA's attitude about competition-only gear (no matter how little that doesn't work out in practice) and so on. (Note: Their method of choosing what is and is not sufficient carry-oriented is a different argument and topic. :/ )

    @@danspowercleanservices6060 I'm betting that the IDPA HQ folks would strongly disagree. They have spent a LOT of time (and made a LOT of choices) to specifically distance themselves from USPSA. :) That being said---my personal bet is that they have noticed how certain things in USPSA work _really well_, and would solve many of the problems that plague IDPA. (Such as the constant complaints of subjective behavior on the part of SOs and such.) While I don't happen to agree with all of the recent rulebook changes, it is certainly true that I like I lot of them---and, in my opinion, IDPA is currently the most shooter-friendly and fun that it's ever been. (Reload rules make the most sense now, common holster types and carry methods are legal, cover is objective versus subjective, etc.) I mean, who doesn't remember (and detest) flat-footed reloads? :/

    @@PrecisionResponse well those are some valid points and a perspective I had not considered. I hope they do not lean towards USPSA. It is a great discipline, but like you I lean towards IDPA because I think it more geared towards everyday real world situations that we as citizens may face. While I want to win, my first objective is to always learn how to be better prepared to face a bad situation. I hope none of us ever need to face bad situations, but if we do, learn well from the mistakes made on the coarse of fire. Lose competitions, but win those fights.

    It means that at the "Make Ready" command for each stage, all of your gear needs to be in the same place each time. You can literally take ALL your gear off between stages, if you like. You just have to put it back on in the same place for the next stage.
