Idoing Android Head Unit Installation on WRX STI

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Idoing android head unit installation on a WRX STI. I go over the head unit in detail, showing what every cable does and showing you the install on my car. The Idoing head unit is a direct replacement for the quite substandard head units that our cars come with. The head unit comes complete with a bezel to match the car and has built-in harnesses to make the installation as simple as possible.
You can get the head unit here →→ a.aliexpress.com/_mKO26JW
As of the release of this video the head unit is 40% off which is an absolute steal for what this head unit accomplishes.

Boost & Shutter, excellent vide as always and super informative! I'll share my experience with a similar (Joying) unit as for the antenna. The plugs provided by this and other aftermarket radios assume the power for the antenna is from the actual antenna connector, it is NOT. Power for all versions of the factory radio antenna is actually from the i35 connector on pin A8 (yellow). I found this out from both my Joying unit and Kenwood radio using the idatalink kit. Both had horrible stereo reception, I eventually found this out using the Service Manual for my car (2019 WRX) and looking at the wiring diagrams. Once I powered the amplified antenna via the correct pin/connector reception was back to normal. I have (had) the base radio but I checked the other versions and they are all the same. Hope this helps!

Appreciate the solid install tutorial bro. I just finished installing mine. Dumb mistake I made was, the 1 spot I didn't tape, I put a tiny gouge in. Oof. I ran the dual USB to my glove box but neither of the USB cords are working or some reason. Not even charging anything. Maybe the USB connection came loose on the HU. MIght pop it back out on a later date and check that. I also picked up the Metra adapter to retain the center console usb. It goes idoing usb -> metra -> car center console usb. Overall, getting the 10mm bolts out was the hardest part for sure. I used a magnetic 10mm socket - made it much easier to not drop bolts. I got lucky and my model didn't have a starlink module. Mine's a 2016 base with base sound system. It also had the backup cam integrated into the 28 pin.

One thing though, you didn’t mention the 2 additional 10 millimeter bolts that need removed from the sides. 2015 STI install notes: (appreciated your video very much! I just installed one and thought I would share a couple notes) The bezel is very fragile, I had to drill (open up) the 4 HVAC module holes otherwise they can crack and break using the OEM screws. The top part is even more fragile, I removed the part that holds the hazard and MFD toggle button in place and installed that just prior to final hookup. My first bezel was broken on the top two screw attachment points. Also, to be clear you need to use the OEM antenna. I did not use the iDoing supplied antenna cable. Lastly for 2015 users if you do not care if the reverse camera remains in the MFD and not displayed on the iDoing then just skip that harness all together.

Unfortunately for my Crosstrek (non Harman system) I am stuck with the telematics which I have no use for. My dilemma is about connecting a 4 channel Amp for the door speakers, the harness that is included with the head unit only the sub output works using a Y splitter which I am currently using a JL Audio RD1000.1 to power two 15" kicker L7's but I really want to use my existing JL Audio RD400.4 for the door speakers . Thanks for this video. Since you had a amplified setup with a mainstream head unit prior, what is you opinion on the idoing's sound quality and function. I see others say it sounds better than stock but I have a Kenwood Excelon head unit, an Alpine amp and Focal speakers with a sub. I like Android phones for their customization and I think some of that exists here. Something bigger than 7" that appears to look OEM is good too. The Kenwood's interaction with Android Auto is subpar for me. I use the wireless option and it connects great BUT it will not autolaunch. I typically look at pre out voltage and sound quality but I am hoping this head would be good with the other supporting pieces I have and be a great wireless AA experience. Your thoughts?

This is one of the few install videos that get the actual clipping of the plastic bezel in with no problems. One video the top wasn't even clipped in. Since the stock bolt in brackets aren't used that would not be very safe. I assume you aligned all three at the same time before pushing it in?

Here are some tips for putting in the head unit: 1) Make sure the inside is clear so no wires/harness is in the way when you push the head unit in. 2) Align the top clips around the vent bezels first. 3) Once they are all in, place a hand on the surface at the top to keep the clips down and in place while taking your other hand and pressing in the clips at the very bottom. You will have to slightly bend (I know that sounds scary but it's not actually bending the unit) to make sure the bottom clips are aligned in the correct position. 4) After the top and bottom clips are aligned, gently push in the sides of the head unit to pop everything in place. Gently press all around the top, bottom, and sides to confirm it's all in.

great vid as always. does this unit have DAB and does it work with the stock antenna for that? Also, does it work with the stock usb input/aux input? I have a pioneer hu and after a lot of research and work i have managed to get it work without having to add anything other than a mic (which i put in the stock location) although i did have to change to a single usb module as my hu thought the stock double one in my car was a hub and didn't like it... also, are you aware that in australia they have front cameras (and passenger side) available for wrx/sti? i got the front camera and have it working but i am sure it would have been a lot easier if you had a vid for it!

  • @akqjtn

Hey, I'll have to do some research, but I think for DAB you would need a USB adapter. As far as USB and AUX it does not use the stock ones for that. Thanks for the heads up about the cameras. I'll look I to it.

@@akqjtn just thinking about what i did and i retained the use of the headphone jack as part of the harness i got which also dealt with the steering wheel controls and reverse cam. however it uses 2 rca jacks so i got a converter as my hu required a 3.5mm plug. so with the idoing i think it can be done (and wouldnt even need the converter) but probably need to cut up my existing harness and wire it in manually to the 28pin connector and then plug into the idoing audio in. for the usb, the Metra AX-TOYUSB will do the trick and can be plugged straight into one of the idoing usb inputs (And i could probably go back to the dual usb module i replaced with single). for dab, i found a harness that allowed me to use the existing aerial and connect straight to the back of the HU so this should work with a usb adapter. it took a lot of time (and money!) getting everything i need to try and keep everything as stock as possible and without cutting existing wires and i am happy with the setup but the obd2 functionality of the idoing is whats tempting me - is this something you are covering in part 2? re camera - the part number is 86357VA010 (its not cheap!) and i also bought a t-harness from 12vmods which connects above the washer fluid tank and then runs to the camera which fits in place of a removable insert in the grille - this only works for 2018+ with led srh headlights but i believe it can also be done for older cars/non led+srh but then has to be wired in to the back of the MFD and is a much bigger job. if you were going to do it the info is out there to simply make your own t harness or even just splicing wiring if you don't mind doing that... also, i don't think the side camera will be an option for you as australia drive on the same side as us (UK) - it requires a replacement lower part of the side mirrors that have somewhere to mount it and these will not be available for right hand side mirrors...
