The zipper *is* the most efficient way to merge lanes, it’s not even debatable. The problem is, for the zipper to work, everyone has to be on the same page. It rarely goes that smoothly in real life.

At 8 Minutes. This is the law in Germany. Drive until the lane ends. Perfectly done.

Same here, retired OTR.......I went 35 years and millions of miles without killing or injuring anyone........I live in a small town now and I have NO URGE to go anywhere at all! A couple weeks ago, someone honked their horn. Heads turned and I heard someone say, "Tourist."

Seeing those two cops on horseback @ 12:22 reminded me of an encounter I had with an officer riding a horse. Let me explain. As I stated in my previous comment, I live in St. Louis, MO. Many years ago, I was in the neighboring city of St. Charles. It was the downtown district with many small shops and brick-paved roads near the Mississippi River. With it being a cool crisp day I had my window rolled down. While at a stop sign, a cop on horseback comes up beside me. Next thing I know I am gasping for air. The officer leaned over and asked me if everything was O.K. I responded "No. Your horse just farted." While laughing, the cop pats the horse on the head and says "Good boy." I then asked the officer, "Are horse farts the new way of fighting crime?"

As a retired Paramedic after 35 years of service, I can tell you that entitled drivers that refuse to yield to our lights and siren was a daily thing.

Driving until the end of the lane before merging in a “zipper” is the most efficient way to use the lane space. It requires everyone to play along though, alternating between lanes at the merge point.

That actually DOES look like it is set up to be a "Zip Merge lane" where you are REQUIRED BY LAW to go to the cones to merge and merging is SUPPOSED to be 1:1. For that reason, they do NOT put up markers stating "Right lane ends in X feet"...because they actually expect traffic t work properly. Technically--I'd not do it that way, if I knew that lane was ending (like it had been like that for a day or two...)

Here in germany it is also the rule to drive until the end of the lane and then merge one by one. During the rushhour, than the experienced drivers are on the way it works perfectly.

My youngest sister has been T-boned twice by idiots who felt they had the absolute right to blow a red light. She's partially handicapped, but manages to own her own business with 3 other people. She started life with chronic ear problems, now she has chronic back problems.

Re Porsche. A friend asked me to drive their Porsche to a service station. I had to take the freeway to get there. The speed limit was 100 kms, I honestly thought i was doing 60 miles an hour or 100 kmh. I was way wrong. Yup, i was driving 100 MPH. Porsches are frighteningly gluey to the road. (Took me all of 10 minutes to figure out it was not go slow day.)

At 8:00, the driver in this video cut it as close as close could cut it, which DOES feel dickish, but otherwise is completely fine and legal. Encouraged, even, since experts have said that zipper merging lets traffic go faster overall and reduces jams. As USA Today has said...
