Not able to answer yes or no. These trees grow in zones 3 to 8. Colder than zone 3, they can die from being too deeply frozen. Hotter than zone 8, such as a tropical areas without winters, these trees do not do well either. Basically, these trees like warm summers, and winters that get cold enough to go below freezing at least occasionally. All that said, they do tolerate quite a variable climate within these restrictions.

@@wildfoodshomegarden333My tree is strong and healthy. It has 30+ years. I live in Southern California. The weather never goes below 40F. Freezing temperatures are not required for this species.

@@ryannechvatal9888 That is interesting, thank you for letting me know. Is this a female tree that produces fruit? I understand the male clones can live well in that climate, but it has been my understanding that to produce fruit, it needs the seasonal changes. Since my video/website is about wild foods, I only considered fruit bearing Ginkgo trees.

@@wildfoodshomegarden333 my tree is female though I do not know how it gets fertilized because I have not seen any male trees in my area.

@@ryannechvatal9888 That is really interesting. Thank you for answering my question. I knew these trees could handle a vast range of conditions, but that is remarkable.

Most seeds have two sides. A few have three; is this significant?

I have seen that, but have never read any comment about it. My guess is that it is like other nuts, Hickory nuts for example, that can have variation in the size and shape of nut based on different factors like: Individual tree variation, growing season quality, getting more light, etc. Sometimes stress events can cause trees and fruit to grow differently. These can include insects affecting them, cold snaps early in the season when the fruit is forming, droughts, fungus & mould outbreaks, etc.

How do you insure that you have a male reproducing seed or a female producing seed? Or do you have to do something to the tree once it starts growing?

Good question. There is no way to tell, nor is there anything you can do other than plant the Ginkgo nuts and wait until the tree reaches sexual maturity and see what it is. As far as I am aware, there is no way to "feminize" the nuts or the immature trees. I have never found female Ginkgo trees for sale, though someone might be doing it. The only option is cloning of cuttings from known female trees. Cloning of hardwoods is not easy, but it can be done. In China, Ginkgo nuts are grown as a nut crop, but in North America Ginkgo trees are almost exclusively used for landscaping, so they all are male clones.
