Identifying Gymnopilus luteofolius
This video is a look at some laughing gyms. This species is Gymnopilus luteofolius, and was found growing on a pine log. In all of my time mushroom hunting and foraging, this is the first time I've come across this species!
This video is for educational and entertainment purposes only. I wish to show some pretty footage of a nice mushroom while talking about taxonomy. I am not promoting the use of hallucinogenic mushrooms, nor will I provide any information on their cultivation. Possessing and intentionally growing certain species of mushrooms is illegal in most US states. This is a wild specimen.
This species is not recommended for consumption due to its psilocybin content. This species, along with other Gymnopilus species can be easily confused with species of Galerina. That could be a deadly mistake. For that reason, please check with an expert and use multiple references if you wish to positively identify any new mushroom species.
This species, Gymnopilus luteofolius, can be darker colored and is often more a vibrant pink purple color with a scaly cap. This patch was a bit bleached by some full sun and a little rough looking.

Great video. You make the topic so easily understandable to any knowledge level. A very rare skill. Subbed!
Some nice blurry background depth on your shots. Love it. I feel like whenever you cut to the shot of the mushroom on its head, I swear you can see the mushroom "breathing" as it moves ever so slightly.

Thanks! I wasn't sure if still videos of mushrooms would hold peoples' attention or not, but they do kinda move and twinkle a bit.
Thank you! I just found a TON of these growing on wood chips. This confirmed the iNaturalist ID for me.

Very nice presentation.
I found a mushroom growing in my rotting wooden fence that fits the criteria of this entirely, except when I cut it in half it was plain white inside and not red or pink. There is some blueish green bruising on the cap, but that could be mold as far as I know. Haha Oh, when I hold a black light to the gills they glow green. Oh, no stipe below the cap though.
terrific film i recently found some in october in 3056 and i made a nice tea :P i had a lovely trip much like ecudorian white caps

Thanks! There will be more after it warms up again!
They are known to grow on old wood structures even. They seem to have a thing for wood boats.
The younger ones look totally different! I don't remember seeing those.

They were just little buttons before so I went and looked at them a couple of days later. I think the old ones got pretty faded and washed out looking in the sun.
Thanks so much! I found these in my front yard and wondered if they were edible

Thanks so much! I appreciate it!
I don't think I'd wanna eat these if they were growing in pressure treated wood; Recent types of pressure treated wood contain various copper compounds ---- probably not wise to consume ---- but the anti-fungal treated wood that was used up until the early 1990s was often treated with arsenic.....😳

Absolutely! It would not be wise to eat mushrooms growing out of treated wood.

Wood , pressure treated with cupric arsenic, a copper arsenic compound, will prevent ANY myco cultures from colonizing, with very few exceptions, and that is primarily why it was used.
" It is important to note that Gymnopilus junonius is considered very poisonous; this may be due to the presence of neurotoxins, gymnopilins, in the fruiting body of the mushroom" ik these are luteofolius but still can anyone explain this further because i was interested in trying some

Yeah what you're quoting is a 20 year old comment from someone on Shroomery. Also Junonius has been deprecated
