For a country roughly the size of Bosnia & Herzegovina, or the US state of West Virginia, Costa Rica seriously punches above its weight when it comes to birdy-ness. Hummingbirds are a great example of this diversity. Of all 300+ species of hummingbirds, more than 50 have been recorded in this beautiful country.
In ideal conditions hummingbirds can be quite readily identified - but these little buggers do their best to ensure that conditions are rarely ideal. They're small, they're often refusing to remain still, and even when they don't move light and weather conditions can make identification quite difficult.
In this new video series, we're exploring Costa Rica's hummingbirds, starting with a group of very distinctive species: The Hermits and Sabrewings.

Great as usual. My absolute favourite is the Violet Sabrewing. Indeed, in the area of Monteverde they fly like wild aircraft bomber pilots...crazy, how aggressive these little birds can be towards others.

Hey! Thanks so much, I really appreciate it! Yes, I'm a big eBird fan. Right now, my CR list is at 509 species. Not too shabby, but nothing crazy. I really need to close some gaps in the South Pacific and on the Caribbean.... How about you? Thanks for stopping by!

@@jabirustories Ah thats brilliant! Mine is a humble 350 after a single trip but I'm planning to come back. Got some big misses, snowcap, bare necked umbrellabird, rufous-vented ground-cuckoo etc. Hows your list outside of CR?
