Ideas That Stick with Advertising Legend Lee Clow | A Bit of Optimism Podcast

Apple's "1984" commercial, the Energizer Bunny, and the launch of Air Jordans all have one thing in common. They're all creations of legendary ad man Lee Clow.
As creative director of Chiat/Day, Lee spent decades making work that transcended advertising and became cultural icons. He shared a close relationship with Steve Jobs, and his Think Different campaign revitalized Apple, transforming it into the brand we recognize today.
As someone whose career started in advertising, Lee's a hero of mine, and I was thrilled to sit down with him. He shares the entertaining stories behind his most iconic work and some insights into Steve Jobs's leadership, his rare ability to fearlessly embrace creativity.
This...is A Bit of Optimism.

Lee Clow's impact on advertising is truly legendary. For those entrepreneurs looking to make a splash, remember that Clow's success was deeply tied to his ability to craft a narrative, not just an ad. His work with Apple showed the world that if you can align your product with a story that resonates on a human level, you can create not just customers, but fans for life.

What a cool and talented guy Lee is, thank you for sharing this interview Simon. Lee is truly one of the OG rock stars of advertising. Lee and folks like George Lois, Dale Pon, Jay Chiat, Hal Riney, Jeff Goodby and Rich Silverstein are my heroes. Would ❤ to find Lee’s documentary, Here’s to the Crazy Ones. If anyone knows where it can be viewed, please share.

Hey Simon make merch of your logo, I'd totally wear your brand on a t-shirt. Thinking of using my multicolor 3D printer to make a wearable reminder of your mindset for myself and family. Regarding the injury, soft tissue recovery goes better with increasing magnesium and potassium. Heal well and quickly - I'm optimistic for you in that regard ;) Thanks for being such a healthy model of nurturing masculinity for my sons.

Important to note that Apple literally stole the mouse , click & drag user interface from the Xerox Park labs. They literally showed the product to Jobs when he went for a tour & stupid enough they did not have a patient for it at the time.

What happened to your arm? Looks like it’s broken with age bones don’t heal as fast hope you find the right doctor to get you to a speedy recovery. When I dislocated my leg if it was in US I am certain I would have had numerous surgeries to get my dislocated knee back in it’s place not back home. We had a lady who used her hand and gently worked till she was able to put my knee in its right place. It’s a miracle work as I call it she heals many by using plants etc. they have done it for 5 generations and healed many. If you ever decide you need Anna’s information I can ask her and provide here. She has thousands of people going to her. She is overseas not in the States. Back home they call these type of people snxchis if anyone know the name in English please let me know. Thanks
