    How would you go about bracing a exterior wall balloon framed? It’s a 2 story home. Taking out about 13’ of the exterior wall and putting in a couple LVL.

    Great video Greg. Does it matter if there is a tight fit against all surfaces when sistering with new 2x4's (ie not just the original studs but also the floor rim joist)? If so, how do you get a full thickness 2x4?

    Thanks for this video, very informative. I have a 2-story balloon framed house that was built in 1952 (I guess the architect was older?), and there is a first floor "exterior" wall running parallel to the joists that I would like to add a five foot wide opening in, so a half bath on the corner of the house can be expanded and a bathtub added. I say "exterior" because there is a one story breezeway/garage on the other side of the wall, over a slab (main part of the house is over a basement). Would cutting a large opening like this in a wall parallel to the joists generally be more or less structurally risky than adding and enlarging openings perpendicular to the joists like you showed in this video? There is a fairly heavy cast iron tub in the second floor full bath above, but I believe that is primarily (or fully) supported by the ledger perpendicular to the joists?

    Great video... so easy to follow...in the balloon framing model, would it be possible to cut a good portion of the second floor, creating a two story vaulted ceiling for the first floor? Any problems doing the same scenario on a second to third floor?

    You have 7 studs bearing down on 5 studs.. I think where you take the weight of 4 jack studs and header, that needs to be transferred all the way down to the foundation. there has to be a requirement for either inline framing or direct bearing in the IRC somewhere

  • @gregvancom

    @gregvancom

    Most jack studs over a window header can be spaced 16 inches on center, unless an engineer requires something different.

    Greg, your videos have been extremely helpful for years now. Today I'm thinking facing a new problem. I'm on balloon framing (2 stories plus unfinished bare wood attic 2x4 roof) and during heavy wind I get all kind of creaking and squeaking from my attic. Should I shore this up with some extra 2x4 framing at the angle points or does it make sense to using mending/tie plates? I'd be nervous in the long term about beating up 120 year old lumber with mending plates. Also, there are no vertical center posts up there at all, I would be oppose to putting a cross/tee on a post about the 2nd floor wall.

    Really appreciate these videos! hoping you do more on this topic. I'd be interested in how you deal with issues in framing on the sides of the building where you cant tie into the ends of the floor joists. I was also wondering how you would address mud sill rot, particularly with regards to the different ways sills were constructed? Thanks

    Thanks for replying to my comment Greg. As far as tieing into the floor joists i was referring to the viewing angle of the repairs being done in this video. If you were to rotate the building model 90 degrees you wouldnt have anything to rest your blocking or plates on top of. i was just wondering how you address framing issues on that side of the building? in my case I own a balloon frame house and may have to repair some framing due to rot of a couple of studs that happen to be on *that side of the building, which also run about three stories. I was hoping not to have to wrestle with 30 foot 2x4s. As far as the mudsills I did watch the one one where you were talking about repairing the sill plate but was just wondering if balloon frame sill repair was something that required a different approach since the plates are configured in a different way (or a couple of different ways in which i have seen). Like how do you support the structure while doing repairs. At any rate, I'm always watching out for your new videos. keep up the good work.

    If you're referring to the side without the ribbon notched into it, then you can use the same methods I suggested in the video or a combination of them. I will try to make a video to address this issue and attach a link here when done.

    If you wanted to cut an opening on the 1st floor exterior wall which runs parallel with the joists, can you just cut the studs and frame your opening or is there a need to support it somehow? Seems like the sheathing holds it all in place just fine but i wanted to get an opinion just in case.

    I cannot provide you with structural engineering advice, but if you can install a header, then that's going to be better. If you're only going to install a 2 foot opening, then that might not be a big deal, but a 6 foot opening will. kzread.info/dash/bejne/iK2fqdCbpa6WZJc.html

    hello Greg. Great info on BF. I have a typical 2 story farm house layout 3 rooms down stairs 3 bedrooms and a bath upstairs. I want to remove the wall between the kitchen and dinning room. the wall span the entire width of the house. Because this is a Balloon framed house, is there any special support needed? If I'm not mistaken balloon frame houses don't have load bearing balls. Is this correct? Thanks again for the videos Tom

    Hey Greg! Great video as usual. Wife & I just bought a 1910 victorian. Been watching a ton of your videos to get more info for future renovations. One issue we are running into .. the house sits atop a fieldstone foundation. The studs are supported by a fat joist that sits atop the fieldstone foundation. After removingplaster & shiplap, I found old termite damage to the outermost stud in the corner of the room (exterior wall). How can I reinforce this stud? It is currently swinging freely! Yikes. Have a structural engineer coming soon.

    Greg, I believe I saw the relevant videos on your site but I'm not sure they fully apply. Let's say you want to put a header in an exterior load bearing wall of the first floor of a 2 story structure. Normally, you build a wall slightly inside to hold up the ceiling/2nd floor and then that in turn holds up the roof and such but in a balloon framed house with a ribbon, building a wall inside would merely hold up the ceiling joists but not the remaining vertical portion of the wall which in turn is holding up the 2nd story ceiling and the roof rafters. Would the face nailing of the joists into the studs in combination with a temporary wall be enough to hold up the 2nd story/roof?

  • @gregvancom

    @gregvancom

    7 жыл бұрын

    You bring up a very good point and these types of repairs might require a wall underneath the floor joists and then a second wall above the floor joist to support the roof rafters and ceiling joists. I can make a video if you need one on this topic.

    Hey I know this is a little older but....helpful info since I just opened up my walls. My house is balloon framing, no ledger, but has t&g on inside and outside of studs, which are filled with wood chip insulation. Anyway I want to add insulation and electrical and fireblocks. How would you do this?

  • @gregvancom

    I'm pretty sure this answer won't shock you, but you will either need to remove portions of the exterior or interior wall coverings and usually most people remove and replace the interior drywall or plaster.

    Just opened up an I terror wall in our 1917 farmhouse and same thing. Guess it use to be an exterior wall so had tongue and groove boards run vertical took those off and had rough cut 2x6, 2x8, 2x10, 2x14" planks horizontally. Took those off and walls were full of Wood chips that went up past second floor. We then noticed the wall studs were full length 14' so now need to figure out how to support while we install a 5' header so the load of second floor is supported. Sure interesting to see that cause first time I've ever seen woodchuck insulation or balloon framing before

  • @gomandrews

    @@Lefishn they ran tongue and groove on both sides of the wall studs. Yes I sistered 2x6 to each stud on the floor joist side to hold the weight of the floor joist, as per contractor and engineer design. Then insulate with 6” fibreglass….

    I don't know what type of fireproofing you're referring to. Wood framing fired blocks can be installed in between framing studs at floor joist level to prevent fire or oxygen from going through these cavities, if that's what you're referring to. Feel free to rephrase the question if I didn't answer it.
