Ideal Modifier for Portraits - One-Light Photography (2019)

Mastering portrait photography with one light source will allow you to work faster and in many more situations than relying upon one multiple light for all your work.
In this video, I put to the test my statement that if you only have one light, an Octagon softbox is the best and most versatile modifier for portraits.
Working as a commercial fashion photographer in New York for many years I have created images with dozens of lights and yet, I often go back to a simple single light for the beauty of its simplicity

Yippee! Now this is how to start the new year off correctly, with a look at Ms. Marisa and of course you to Mr. Norton. I once had a model for a couple years that was as much fun to work with as Marisa. That is a blessing that you never know about until you have been lucky. It's not always the look however Marisa is stunning and so was my model. It's personality and exuberance and being in the moment. Marisa is so fun to watch in the background as you do your opening. She is entertaining as heck and just makes these little sessions with you guys magical. I hope we get to see Marisa in a movie one day soon. She already looks like a more attractive Scarlett Johansson. We are all pulling for her.

Thanks for the videos. Learning studio photography now. Last weekend I struggled a bit getting the background pitch black (it was a black backdrop). I couldn't figure out and gave up after and hour of try. Now it makes sense. I added too many lights which could be easily accomplished with just one light. I guess, it's one light for me till I start understanding lights. 2 gets things complicated unless you know how to play with lights. Thanks for these videos.

Nice video. I use a octabox quite a bit, however I think that a 60" umbrella is the most versatile modifier as one can do several things: 1. Bounce light into umbrella 2. Close umbrella down bouncing light to give a more softbox look 3. Shoot thru 4. And do your ring light look you did with the octabox. I've shot anywhere from 1 to a group of 16 with the 60" umbrella which a group that big with a softbox the same size can't be done as easily. :) keep up the great work. I dig your videos.

Another great video... you da man! I agree with the request for some multiple subjects shoots for Adorama. In the past year I bought from Adorama two lenses (a Tamron zoom and a Nikon prime), some light modifiers and several prints. Let them know that their paying customers would really appreciate if they could on ocassion spring for multiple models (Marisa & Erica) for lighting videos. If nothing else they could sell bigger modifiers that way.

Dear Daniel, thank You so much for your tutorials! They are priceless! They really are! They have opened my eyes on studio lighting! ;-) I am writing to you because I have trouble shooting with that high aperture. Once the setting are on, I can hardly see through my camera my model (it's too dark) and what goes with it putting the right focus. How should I do it? What focus mode are you suggesting for portraits? Thank You in advance for your answer! Looking forward your new tutorials. All the best!

I just watched the video you filmed for Adorama's channel, "Is it better to diffuse or reflect light?" and this video. I'm wondering what the difference might be between a "5-in-1" diffuser vs an octabox of similar size? Would your light coming through diffusion material be more harsh because of the reflector attached to the strobe? Thank you for the education!

It would not be harsher, with a diffuser you’ll have more options as far as where to place the light etc., but the soft box gives you may be more consistent results

Great video but I'm confused about why you would use TTL. Starting at 05:03 the exposure on her face seems to vary from frame to frame. I know that Profoto has the option (as does Godox/Flashpoint) to convert the TTL to Manual, which is what I usually do on the rare occasions I start with TTL.

Sometimes I just like to leave it in TTL especially when I’m. moving around.

Marissa's arms are stretched a bit holding that reflector. Makes her shoulders very broad. Been using a 120cm Rotalux for a few years, but I'm trying a 100cm deep octa and it a tad more punchy.

Is the light feathering the model or it’s directly hitting her models eyes? Have had subjects complain about the light in the eyes in the past. These photos came out so great!
