I agree, Jack. Some years back I would eyeball a Craftsman MM Combo wrench set (at one of our other stores. Carquest.) but would never purchase them. When I found out our SEARS was being closed and Craftsman would no longer be made here in the US, I bought them right away. Like I said, didnt need them, but had to have them for sentimental reasons. The last USA made Craftsman I would ever be able to buy. So glad I did. 🇺🇸

A lot of guys with SnapOn boxes hate because it helps them justify paying far too much for the same quality box. I get it. But until you've seen one of these Icon boxes in person, you really can't judge. Ultimately, tools inside the box and your skills and knowledge make you money, not the box their kept in.

If you didn't get that blow modeled case replaced, I'd recommend adding some hinges with Tri-Grip / trifold rivets. May not have the looks, but at least it'll save you from dumping everything on the floor again. You can use the same technique to add some latches should those plastic ones break.

Just quick note I noticed you made a statement about China steel in boxes snap-on still uses usa Virgin steel and there are many different grades of steel it's a interesting rabbit hole if you want to do some research on something I remember talking to the steel warehouse guys here some time ago and rolled steel and formed steel grades are all over the place. There's some interesting stuff to read on the interwebs not all toolsteel related but there's almost a dozen types of steel used in tool manufacturing. Tool steel makes great pew parts!! Enjoy your day buddy!!

Yeah CP, I have no idea if Snap On does or doesn’t. I know some US companies certainly use imported materials, loads of them. They all are pretty careful about it though, knowing the consequences. I just wonder how there are delays of tools if no materials are imported. Almost all delays are due to slow imports. I’ve tried “some” research on material imports, but not much conclusive info out there. I haven’t gone full Monk on it though, lol. Steel grades, like aluminum and most metals are very involved for sure. When we made titanium parts we had access to grades starting at 7% titanium for RC car parts. It went up from there as did prices.

Jimmy, I am a new subscriber friend. After recovering from nearly having my leg crushed off getting hit while on my 1957 Harley I decided I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing what I like. I went to many years of school to get a PhD in chemical engineering but the field has gotten very strange with vaccines that are not vaccines and fake oil and diesel shortages.I originally went to pharmacy school and then went into pharmaceuticals. I have now started a small engine repair business and specialize in engine drive welders, construction equipment, and landscaping equipment. I hope I have the array of tools that I can pass down to my children. I am up in Pa right now but I can't wait to come back down to the warmth and beauty of Florida. I went to school at University of South Florida.

People's heads explode when a professional is using anything besides tool trucks but there's thousands of shops, not on youtube who use brands outside the trucks . My former shop, the owners always had SK, Snap On, Mac stop by but it was about personal preference purchases or specialty tools. Most guys did get the Snap On wrenches, maybe Ratchets , low profile, semi deeps and pliers but these days they started trying out other brands like Tekton because they often get warranties faster than the trucks Quality is going up in Taiwan, more tools from Germany & Japan, it's making tool companies compete and evolve which is good for is all. Facts are, the tool trucks are a preference not a necessity. My local shops use air Ratchets, impacts & Sunex, Grey Pneumatic for the rough stuff and hand tools for the moderate . Break them loose & run them off . Great stuff Jimmy I believe those Green handled are SK

I started with the same Craftsman 1/2" in ratchet that you opened the video with. It came with the tools I got when I was in auto shop in the mid 80s. When I graduated high school and went to work at the dealer I only had a JC Penny metric set of sockets and wrenches. My plan was to go to Sears and buy a set of metric tools. I got the same advice as you.... "get Snap On, the Craftsman is junk"! I bought a set of Snap On 3/8 shallow sockets, ratchet and a couple extensions. I just bought the impact sockets that I needed. For many years I only had two 1/2" ratchets as 3/8" is the most commonly used drive. I had the said 1/2" Craftsman and a long flex head New Britain made Matco. Fast forward to the early 2000s. I had to do rear brake pads on my 04 GMC 2500 pickup. The caliper bracket bolts were tight as hell. I couldn't get the impact gun in there. I didn't have the ultra long 0 deg box end wrenches. I put the Craftsman ratchet and a Snap On impact socket on the bolts. I used the floor jack on the ratchet to break the bolts loose. I figured if the ratchet blew up I could warranty it. It held up just fine and still worked great after. That yellow lock tight that GM uses is some tough stuff. Unfortunately that Craftsman ratchet was stolen along with my good tool box. Now my main 1/2" ratchet is a Stanley that was purchased at Walmart. Been a great ratchet.

I would like the top box, but it seems really high for the top drawers. I’m 5’9” so I would likely need a small step to easily see in the top drawer. Do you find the height an issue? Harbor Freight has a Super Coupon for the top box that makes it appealing.
