Nice to see the mag loop portable. Loads of info online as to how to use and how they perform. I live by them. Do not be surprised as to how they perform. They are brilliant. Just make sure it is tuned properly using low power and then increase testing SWR as you go. Just remember, mag loops generate a shed load of Volts and Current either side of the tuning capacitor. 10 watts is a good place to go.

I’d love a 705 but it’s outside of my budget. I’ve looked at the mag loop antennas before but never tried one. I’m currently only on 10m with a white stick vertical and on 2m with a homebrew slim Jim. Hopefully doing my intermediate next month so I can then run a bit more power. My callsign is M7MDY.

Seriously, absolutely the best time to do it. I've passed my foundation exam and got my callsign last week. The Exam is £27.50 and you can get a decent starter, Baofeng, radio for £30. There are loads of clubs that offer fab support. Look on the RSGB website to find your local one and there's an online course run by Essex Ham which is absolutely brilliant. More than 2000 people have passed this year and there are loads of new folk on the air. I've had nothing but patience and encouragement from other operators. Message me if you've got any questions.

LOTS of directions to go with the hobby and thanks to the internet, it's not too hard to find out where there are regular nets being held so you can listen in to get the hang of things before you get your license to get on the air yourself. I'm just a few months into the hobby and I've had a great time and learned A LOT. I'm a history buff and a space enthusiast so learning radio really brought a lot to both of those interests.

Andy, you are too close to the antenna. Magnetic Loop requires a distance from antenna since it eliminates high electromagnetic field.

Unfortunately a QRP radio with a sub-optimal antenna is not ultimate in portable ham radio. I've owned mag-loop antennas and they work OK for their size, but not exceptionally well. Nonetheless, great video that demonstrates the portability of the antenna. And loop antennas do have great, low signal-to-noise ratio. You got me interested in re-looking the mag-loop antennas!

I make contacts on an MFJ-1820T whip and a 5 meter raised radial, it's not going to win contests or break pileups but I make contacts on it every time I use it. I also have the DL1DN whip, no radials, it uses human counterpoise, so I hold it as I walk around with my FT-818, there are 2 coils for different bands and you adjust the length of the whip for whatever band. It works. I can sit on a rock, on a tree stump or just out in the back yard and make contacts while holding the radio. Of course, you can also use a counterpoise system with the DL1DN whip. Sometimes a compromise antenna is no compromise when you're after easy and super fast setup and one that you can just walk around with. I can't imagine carrying a tripod with me everywhere for some antennas or EFHW and messing with trees or portable masts, all these are good for stationary purpose. I know my portable EFHW 49:1 will get out much better but that's a different antenna for a different purpose. Sometimes the more efficinet antenna is the compromise. I've had great success with MFJ's 935C Loop tuner and 4 watts and also the MFJ-9232 QRP loop tuner, on 17 and 10 you can make a very small portable loop and it works amazingly well, I have a couple of videos on my channel with the 2 tuners if you cant to check it out.

Well the idea is to make contacts around the world just using radio (no internet) its been around since the dawn of time but modern developments in technology have moved things on a lot, its a pretty technical hobby with many different areas to explore but also pretty fun to talk to other like minded electronic nuts!

I think most CB'ers use USB, 27,555 I think is still the calling frequency, absolutely booming at times but Solar activity has been quiet for some time which doesn't help. Not sure a lot would use AM/FM now especially the die hard CB'er. Imagine the fun if everyone had CB in their cars all connected to one channel on the road, lots of People talking to People they never met before or may never talk to again. COuld be a lot of fun and could also be a very useful tool to warn others of Police checks or speed traps etc, many ways where CB in cars can be both useful and fun.

Fancy someone calling 'CQ 40 metres' when using the 40 m band! Nice video. No pretence, which is novel for this hobby. For newcomers, remember that the $400 'Premier' loop is, erm, some coax at £1.50 per metre, and a maybe £25 wide spaced capacitor (though you may find bidding goes silly on these on ebay, precisely because of how cheap you can make your own!)
