ICNG - The Koploper Killer?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The poor old ICMms, better known as Koplopers, they're getting on in years. The leased TRAXX locomotives too are running on borrowed time. And what to replace them?
Alstom's Coradia type Electric Multiple Units, running under the NS as the Intercity New Generation, or ICNG. In the first weekend of July 2022 a pair of the EMUs, nicknamed "The Wasps" were publicly displayed at Rotterdam. So, what's the verdict...

For me, especally the ICM (pre-refit) was my absolute favourite. It was always amazig to watch trainsets connect. The ICmm is worse in many ways, not just because they shut the heads, but because they changed the bogies, making it move much rougher over the rails.

I think the ICNG has comfortable seats, they're better than I thought they would be. But it's indeed a bit tight. There isn't much room to walk between the seats, especially in 2nd class. Hight is also an issue, I have to watch out in places so I don't hit me head against something. Last the beeping sound of the door opening / closing is to loud for my taste. But overall, a promising train.

many of these reasons are due to basic ginometry, phisics and accesability constrains, if the Netherlands was allowed under EU rule tot raise platforms to 850 mm above the track these issue's could be resolved but EU law only allows for platform Heights of 750 mm or 550 mm. this causes the bogey's to come inside the train making those raised seats necessary but also making the floor to low to put equipment witch means that it was moved to above the pasenger compartments causing to low sealing. the 200 km/h top speeds also play a role i don't want to get into.

    1. There are no ICE services from Rotterdam, There are ICD services. Domestic IC's operating on the HSL. + IC Brussels 2. The TRAXX's have a top speed of 220 km/h it's the rebuilt ICRMh coaches with a 160 km/h cap. 3. The reason why the TRAXX aren't fit for HSL service is because of the phase changes between both voltage and train control systems. They're more suited for freight.

The ICMm is not going out of service for a long time. The ICNG is a Replacement for the oldest of ICMm’s and the TRAXX loco’s. Two new type of intercity designs which have not been finalized and are planned to go into service in 2027 and 2030. The ICMm is planned to go out of service around 2035. So they will be enjoyable for a long time. The TRAXX loco’s with the ICR coaches will be gives to Belgium / Put on warm reserve for a while until the trains can be sold to other countries. When the ICMm goes out of service then they will most likely all be scrapped

@@KaaimanProductions ICNG is expected to go into service sometime into 2023. By then the routes on the HSL will still be a mix of TRAXX and ICNG so normal speeds of 160 will be maintained, in 2024 the HSL should be serviced entirely by ICNG and therefore the trains can be planned with a higher speed.

Another accessibility point I noticed in this train is how you need to reach the wheelchair places. You need to maneuver between a big accessible toilet, and a baggage rack. The space between them is barely wider, if not narrower, than the average wheelchair. So good luck getting in the spot, and even better luck getting out before the doors close again. And that's in calm hours, I wouldn't want to be a wheelchair user in this train in rush hour.

It is not the killer of ICM "Koploper". ICM is riding the Dutch rail for 45 years and ICM is just to old for riding further. And ICNG is intended to replace the koploper on domestic services. This spring ICNG will star passenger service on international Amsterdam - Brussels - Amsterdam and in summer ICNG will start domestic passenger service on Amsterdam - Breda route.

Dutch people started dreaming and talking about having their own high speed train before I was born in the early seventees of the 20th century. In the late eightees the decision is made. Building starts in the early 2000's. The line opened in 2009. Crappy trains are delivered 5 years late in 2012, and only run for a month and a half. And now ten years later we get a really fast train that will probably be in service for the next 30 years. I hope I still live to see the first Dutch high speed train 😢

God bless those ICM(m) units will be gone. Ugly things they are. Uncomfertable seats, broken intercom systems, vandalised door area's, shaky as hell.... I mean some of it is old age I admit but after the doorloopkop was removed (the thing that made this train unique), NS did nothing to compensate for a now nonfunctional head of the train but 1 single yellow plate. This made the train a eyesore to look at. But hey you know, keep complaining about annoying toiletdoors while you could have cared to mention facts like the doors finnaly being at platform hight or that this train has sockets and usb ports in second class...for the first time in a intercity. There are some valid points you made but you shouldn't just throwaway good stuff. Also I have yet to hear a single Dutch person complain about seats that are too high...
