The store's title is written in Japanese Kanji. These are essentially Chinese symbols and there are thousands of them to learn. The radical that Ichigo refers to determines what base category the symbol falls into. There are a few hundred, I believe, including one for bugs, so all symbols defining bugs will have this symbol on the left side. This is so that even if you can't determine precisely what a character is referring to, you can get an idea.

Japan uses three different systems of writing. He could easily understand "dragonfly" if it were written in Hiragana or Katakana, but he did not know the Kanji for it.

TheDisarminghinkle It’s like remembering all of the words in the English language which is impossible. There are too many to remember. It’s the same with the Japanese Language. They have too many characters (which can make different words if you change even one character) to remember.

Renji grew up in the slums can read Japanese compare to Ichigo that had more education and is an +A student 😅

To those who are wondering, Japanese has three alphabets: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. What was being displayed on the shop front was kanji. And kanji is a BITCH to learn.

For those that don't understand, there are several different ways of writing in Japanese. The stores sign is in Kanji, which is the most difficult since there are thousands of characters in it

I realize I'm an American asking this, but...why would they have multiple ways of writing the same language? I know there are differences between American English and British English, but at least we're two different countries with an entire ocean between us. And at least we all use the same alphabet.

@PaperbackWizard The different writing systems provides different context when they are read. The 3 writing systems are katakana, hiragana and kanji. Katakana is mostly used for foreign words, hiragana for native japanese words and grammatical articles and then there's Kanji which is mostly used to represent an idea and are commonly used as names like the one on the shop Ichigo was trying to read. Without these writing systems altogether, reading japanese would be a nightmare as japanese has a LOT of homophones and it can be really confusing to tell which word is which for example the word Hashi. It can either mean a chopstick or bridge. Same word pronunciation but has different spellings for it. And the same can be said for most of the words in the language

For anyone confused about the joke, kanji is derived from Chinese characters, which use radicals as a basis for the word (kind of like roots in English, like how 'hydro/hydra' in a word means it's related to water). The left side of the 蛉 character is the bug radical.

@@kurosakikun96 partially right: hiragana and katakana- 50 characters each and kanji are about 2100 common kanji for daily life use....not thousand in each, just in kanji And not all japanese can remember all of them, for exemple, when they write on their phones or computers they right in hiragana and they have to select the possible or wanted kanji from a list.....they just have to see the resemblance not to know the character by heart. Search on yt "do japanese remember all kanji?" And you will see that many don.t.....anyway, have a nice day :))

I understand this after taking a asian history class, before the Japanese from before borrowed chinses characters from China, hiragana and katakana did not develop till later, so the Japanese just used Chinese characters (writing system ) mainly and but changed meaning and pronunciation to Japanese. But later on only 1500 chinses characters from thousands of chinsee character. Thus Ichigo has hard time understanding this restaurant sign because it's written in strictly in chinses characters and possibly ones that did not make the 1500 selection. Correct me if I'm wrong, I just going off from what i remember from my east asian history class

The first kanji is 銀 which means "silver". The second and third kanji are 蜻蛉 which together mean "dragonfly". The first kanji of "dragonfly" uses the 虫 (bug) radical. Ichigo guesses 蛞蝓 (slug) because it too uses the 虫 (bug) radical.

this word is read as "tonbo" which means dragonfly in japanese, but even Chinese can't recognize all japanese kanji. there is a lancer called "tonbogiri(蜻蛉切)" used by Honda Tadakatsu in Sengoku period in Japan, it named because the sharpness even a dragonfly just stop at the top of the lancer will be cut in half(just exaggeration)
