Icelands Largest Volcano is Expanding - Bárðarbunga Update

The hot spot under Iceland is telling us that the 2014 eruption was just the beginning but how does the worst case scenario look like so I'm taking you on a tour to the past and up to the highlands where I spent last weekend.

Thankyou, thankyou, so much for uploading this, Gylfi! I've crossed those rivers and swum in the warm river that flows under the Holuhraun lava flow but my health now means I'm unlikely to ever get back. I'm going to be coming back to watch this video again and again :)

The carved river channel with the huge island in the stream bed reminds me of the Channeled Scablands of eastern Washington State. During the last ice age 20,000 years ago, part of a glacier blocked the Clark Fork River in northern Idaho. This created an ice dam that caused the river to form a lake in western Montana. This lake grew to cover 3,000 square miles, containing as much water as Lakes Erie and Ontario combined. When the ice dam collapsed. The water from the lake was released and created one of the largest mega floods in the history of the world.

Well that was an outstanding report with excellent photography. You mentioned that it has been a little cold, it's been a little cold here in Thailand also. In fact it's been freezing cold in many countries but only hot events are reported. stunning vid as always and look at that in the vid a 4x4 going through a river and not been driven around a supermarket car park lol , still think there will be an event in the autumn due to all the areas that are showing signs of activity and im sure that you would want an eruption when the ice is at its "thinnest" rather than one going off with a huge bang in the depths of winter and having millions of tons of glacier melting.

I am sitting in Hofn not far from Bardarbunga. Egilsstadir is our next stop before Akureyri. Great history lesion. I have been to dettifoss and can not imagine how that much water could have created that valley. It would have been a sight to see. When I visit it there is so much water that it makes the ground shake. Today is a rain day. The other day I climbed up the mountain next to Vik. I got drone video but not by a drone but by foot. Hope to see you in Akureyri and listen to more history of Iceland. Linda and Ben

So glad to hear to were able to upgrade your computer and now hopefully soon your monitor and or software as needed. As one American of many... The Gand Canyons do find their carving out because of a giant flood. Amazing to see what the force of water can do to a landscape. Hoping the Bardarbunga Caldera doesn't create too much damage to the infrastructure in Iceland.

It’s amazing the video you took of the results of flooding look very much like the Channeled Scablands in the states of Washington and Oregon in the USA. An ice dam broke at the end of the last ice age that released an unimaginable flood. The landscape was molded by the flooding to a much more dramatic extent than was shown in your video in Iceland, but the structures left look very similar.

Beautiful photography of your country. Only 3-4 weeks of Summer left 🥶and it's been a cool Summer for you...does that mean you anticipate a colder Winter (?). I do hope for the best of outcomes for your volcanoes...I would find the increase in earthquake activity a bit worrisome. Although, and I know absolutely nothing about how the earthquakes there affect your topography, is it possible that the earthquakes release some of the stresses in the volcanoes...or are the quakes strictly an indicator of things to come in the way of eruptions? I find your videos so fascinating and educational...glad I stumbled on to your channel. (I was looking for Icelandic horses, when I found your channel).

Thanks for sharing. The first map with the eruption path is really crazy, it means that lava has entered the Atlantic South of Kleifarvatn, a human just can't comprehend the scale. Veiðivötn is a hidden landscape photography gem where I could only spend one night unfortunately...

Loving the drone footage. Iceland is a country of many beautiful landscapes and the mind wants to explore the many different scenarios of how this or that happened. It's good that the experts are keeping an eye on things and I guess we shouldn't worry until we have to. That's not saying the thought of "The big one" is not always in the back of our minds. All you can do is be prepared for anything. Take care be safe, and we'll see you next time.

The hydroelectric power stations in Eastern Iceland are used to provide cheap power to Aluminum smelters. Ships bring in bauxite ore and Iceland exports aluminum at a competitive price due to low energy costs.

Very good video. The water carved channels with a prominent basalt island in the middle looks very similar to steamboat rock in the pacific NW formed by glacial lake missoula's ice dam collapsing. I've seen 5000 cumecs flowing ...anything of that size can do a lot of damage.

Well, there is always the risk factor when you live in a volcanic region. It can happen in 10 minites or in 10000 years, who knows. There are several places on earth that look like something is happening soon, like the Vesuvio region, or the Yellowstone region. But nobody knows for sure, so people just carry on as if nothing can go wrong. And for many, this may be true. The time frame of a human life is only a blink of an eye compared to geological processes. All we can do is to carry on and hope it happens somewhere else. :)

8000 years ago hmmm, when the Younger Dryas ended there was a period of 3500 years what was called the Climatic Optimum and it was 3500 years of absolute beautiful weather, but the temperatures in this period we are on course to hit those temperatures by 2100 with current warming trends. So put that in perspective when they talk about warming, it has already been warmer in the Holocene much more than it is today but the coldest point in the Holocene followed this Climatic Optimum period and i wondered what was the cause of the cooling, looks like youve just shown the smoking gun. I wonder how much Iceland is responsible for the collapse of god knows how many civilizations over the millennia...
