    Leifur Thorleifs Kind of extreme! The name I've always liked, (though, being the cooperative sort, I'd have to ask to my wife about it, assuming she were still young enough to have kids, which she's not) isn't on this list. Erik the Red ( Eiríkr Þorvaldsson) had a daughter named Freydís. Is that a name still used in Icelandic?

    Colin MacKenzie Yes i admit, kind of extreme, something i would not dream of doing and especially not if i had been married to a woman like Freydis the daughter of Eirík, i would be dead ;) And yes, Freydís is still in use, and also Þórdís, Snædís, Vigdís, Hrafndís Sædís. Eydís, Jódís, Hólmdís, Védís, Ásdís, Hjördís, Heiðdís, Árdís, Hlédís, Arndís, Svandís ... Did you know that the old Scottish name Torquil is a Icelandic (old norse) origin of the name Þorgill ? ( Thors arrow )

    What strikes me is that with almost no exception in all those names the first vowel will always have a long and pronounced emphasis. I'm Dutch, being a common Germanic language like icelandic many names are familiar and pronounciation is similar but we never emphasize the first vowel that hard like icelandics do.

    Sólveig is a nice name. Does it mean something? If so, it must have something to do with sun.

  • @Tintenfischchen

    @Tintenfischchen

    10 жыл бұрын

    Yes, 'sol' means sun (or 'home', 'hall'... depending on the language^^) and 'vig' means strength or braveness. So you can translate Sólveig to 'sun fighter' or simply 'fighter'! It's a nice name with a great meaning =) My second name is Snaedis which means 'snow-queen', but many people don't know how to pronounce and spell it... I like it as a second name, but I'm happy it's not my first name, because it's very uncommon outside of Iceland (and I don't live in Iceland anymore) ;)

    What I noticed is, that 'ng' is not just pronounced as the nasal [ŋ], but still has a audible 'g' or 'k' part, so it's [ŋk] (e.g. in 'Inga'). In German or English the 'ng' is nasal only most of the times (compare it for example to 'to sing' in English or 'singen' in German)
