Icelandic Horses Competing at Fast Tolt

The Landsmot -- when the best horses and riders from all over Iceland compete. This is the signature gait of the Iclandic horse, the tolt, as it was in the 2006 competition. Although fast, it is not a race. The horses are being judged on the expression of the gait.

    It is natural for the icelandic to tolt. But some have to "learn to find it". Others will choose this gait before trot. Offcourse it takes a lot of training over several years to be as good as these horses ;)

    "Hey Baby" written by Bruce Channel and Margaret Cobb. "Hey, hey baby! I wanna know if you'll be my girl." First came out in early 60s, sung by Bruce Channel, later recorded by Alabama.

    That is not correct. A lot of horse breeds have more than the usual 3 gaits in different variations - all over the world. Among them are very old breeds like the Icelandic and newer ones like American Saddlebreds. There are many gaited horses on this world, unfortunately they are still very unknown or have been forgotten in the shade of time. And unfortunately in some countries (especially the USA) their natural gaits are too often awfully manipulated. Sorry guys, show is not everything!

    The gait is original for travelling over large distances with minimum use of energy and easy to sit on. The "competition-tolt" is more "show of". But it is really pleasent to sit on because the horse always has a hoof on the ground, and the put one foot down at the time like in a really fast walk :)

    What event is this called? Fast tolt in Reykjavik? I am keen to go if possible.... Any one know?

  • @sockses
    @sockses14 жыл бұрын

    yep, riders are sitting still in the saddle. the tolt is one of the smoothest horse gaits, there is no up and down. the only motion in the rider's body is just a tiny bit in the hips, but it's not at all jarring.

  • @shirson

    It is a natural gait for the Icelandic, but to do it as shown in the competition it takes some training and practice.
