I am in the Westfjords right now, its beautiful but the driving here takes longer than anywhere else in Iceland. I have been all over, including F roads on the highlands, the river crossings etc. The roads here in the Westfjords, if you get on the wrong one, are no joke. I am grateful you have given me a preview of 622 and have just cut that one off the options. There are only so many hours a day I want to grit my teeth and clench my butt. :).

The Westfjords can be driven in summer with without much challenge, even a 2WD vehicle is enough. An exception in my video is the road 622 which you should only drive with a suitable vehicle and with sufficient experience. In addition, the tides are to be considered. For me, the Westfjords are one of the most beautiful things Iceland has to offer.

We have been in June/July 2020 with no people due to Corona and in September 2021 we were in the highland and the Westfjords with very less people. That's right, the 622 can be intimidating when you're driving along the steep slopes and there are boulders on the road. It might be that end of June some F-roads in the highland will be opened. If you want drive highland roads it's better to travel middle of July. If you stay longer on Iceland you could also explore the Westfjords first and then the highlands. If you like to do an "overall" trip (Ring Road, Eastfjords, Ring Road and Highland) you could start in June with Eastfjords (after arriving with Ferry in Seyðisfjörður), towards North (Asbyrgi, ...) enjoying the midnight sun period, Westfjords, the whole west area including Snæfellsnes, Reykjavik and then South and Highland. You have to be flexible anyway due to weather conditions.

We visited Westfjords in 2nd week of September and spent 5 days there for this round trip. In the video I’m showing the day sections. Please don’t drive the road 622 without suitable car and experience (not allowed with hired cars). You can drive the tunnel of road 60 or road 626 over Hrafnseyrarheiði with 4x4 car.

Thanks a lot for the video. I had seen some other videos of Rd 622 which seems to be a nerve wracking road. From 15:39 to about 16:40 there doesn't seem to be any road, just waves crashing into the side of the hill. Did you drive through the water? Dashcam footage of that stretch seems to be missing.

Welcome The road 622 has one section on sea level (approx. 1 km) and it's not really a road and the condition of this section is always changing. You can drive this section only on low tide. From 15:39 to 16:00 the video show a drone flight while the tide goes from high to low. From 16:00 to 16:40 it shows the driving with the car. It does not show to the end of this tide section because of low battery.

I‘d like to say you can drive all roads you can see on may map (or in the video), beside the road 622. For details you have to ask your rental company. As well it‘s important to check www.road.is page. On that page you‘ll get actual information about road conditions and closed roads. Don‘t miss Rauðisnandur Beach while traveling to Patreksfjörður. Also a hike at Latrabjarg is fantastic but in September you won‘t see Puffins, that‘s to late.

Of course not! In this area road 60 has a tunnel between the two fjords (about 6 km length). If a road number has only 2 digits you can be sure it‘s easy to drive when good weather. Anyway the roads in the Westjords are improved every year and as far as I know in few years all will be paved.

I heard some very scary stories and I'm not looking forward to driving gravel and hairpin mountain dirt roads. Thank you for your comment. As long as you don't drive F-roads, you don't need a 4x4. Most of the roads in the Westfjords are paved and the roads are being upgraded from year to year. Even the gravel roads with a two-digit number are easy to drive, it just shakes. I use a "Mavic 2 Zoom" and "DJI FPV" drone. In the meantime, I hardly use the drones anymore, as it is forbidden almost everywhere anyway, it is not allowed to fly over people and I have also noticed how the buzzing in nature disturbs me. My recommendation: enjoy your time without the stress of a drone. I wish you an amazing trip and take care.

i would not have done that trip in your car. you were simply lucky because the road conditions looked perfect, which is not always the case. you can easily get trapped without the chance to turn around. i live in the westfjords and it's crazy hoften people with toyota yaris or whatever needs to be picked up. you need high ground clearance and even more than a regular defender, for example. roads like these are the reason you see all this modified offroader in iceland.
