Thank you, Jan. I was there for the 2021 eruption, and stunning as it was to hike up the ridge above the caldera,it was equally amazing to begin to learn how your people have come to coexist with the geologic activity on the island. From watching a young couple take their toddler to the edge of the lava to learn how to approach it and what it was, to listening to a guy talk about growing up feeling that the volcanos were his friends, to the acceptance that, yes, an earthquake or a lava flow may take your town (like it has many times in the history of the island), but it is just what it is. I came away with a deep love of the land (including the sheep!), and a profound respect for the Icelanders. I would go back in a minute, if I could. Sending love and best wishes as we wait for the birth of this new volcano.

I think for Grindavik people the underwater eruption would be better than just under their town. Yes it'll produce a lot of gas and ash, so the airport could be closed when there is too much ash in the air, but like in La Palma tourists could come when the airport is open and observe the eruption from the safe distance. Plus new land could be formed.

@@janiniceland we don’t feel it’s safe to go, especially as insurance is now invalid it would be madness to travel. Jet2 are shameful, offering no help whatsoever, very disappointing and very out of pocket through no fault of our own. We would love to visit later when it’s safe to do so but this won’t be possible for us due to losing all our money to Jet2 😞

This is a great, informative update. I was JUST there in that volcanic area about 2--3 weeks ago. Reykjavik itself had claimed 7000 earthquakes in less than a week. Fortunately, none of them were severe, but the entire area was already on alert.

Exactly what I was thinking! How will the over 300 000 people in Iceland be fed and cared for if the airport closes? Ships? And Winter is coming, with darkness and cold. I really don't give a damn about the tourists.

  • @larsstougaard7097

@@moellerborn I read there are 800.000 sheep on Iceland , so plenty food and wool for winter. A study of the last 11 centuries reveals over 200 eruptions, with around three quarters of these explosive, and with an average frequency of 20-25 events per 100 years. I guess its pretty normal , hope this is just a small one.
