It is a volcano, Iceland doesn't only sit on the Mid-Atlantic ridge, there is a mantle hotspot. Much like how there is a mantle hotspot that feeds the Hawaiian volcanos magma, magma is being feed into the Icelandic *volcanic* systems by a hotspot, which is also feeding into the magma dike that led to this *volcanic* eruption. A fissure eruption is nothing more then a different type of volcanic eruption, one of Hawaii's recent eruptions was a fissure eruption as well.
