In this slightly different landscape photography vlog I attempt to answer a number of questions I've received about my trip to the UK and Iceland.
I cover the following topics:
Background - How did this adventure start? - 2:04
Planning - What planning did I do? - 3:42
Locations - How did I find where I wanted to take photos? - 5:17
Transport - How did I get around? - 6:41
Campsites - How did I find the campsites? - 9:23
Routine - How did I organise my day? - 10:54
Costs - How expensive is Iceland - 12:19
Gear - What gear did I take? - 14:00
More Gear - Gear to help with travel - 16:42
Travelling with Gear - How did I get the gear over there? - 23:51
When to Go -When’s the best time to visit Iceland? 26:09
After my local cricket decided to organise a tour to the UK, I took the opportunity to extend my trip by a week and visit Iceland. I rented a Motorhome for the convenience it provided and it allowed me to adapted my trip to suit the weather conditions and it gave me the flexibility to adjust me schedule to explore locations more if I wanted.
The two videos I mention for more information:
What’s in My Camera Bag 2017 - • Landscape Photography ...
Walk through of Motorhome Rental - • Landscape Photography ...
The campsites in Iceland are easy to find, they're simple, have clean toilets and showers and most have kitchen where you can cook meals.
I share a breakdown of my costs for the week including flights, accomodation, fuel, food.
Along with my Nikon D800, I took my 17-35, 24-70 and 70-200 lenses with all my Lee Filters and polarisers. Plus I had the Mavic Pro and all my vlogging gear.
I also share some of the gear I took on this trip and explained how it helped me on my travels. Here are links to each of the items, they are affiliate links. If you decide to purchase any of the gear through the links below I might receive a couple of dollars, which I’ll invest straight back into the channel on things like music to make sure the content is always improving.

Thanks Andrew. Great debrief on what it takes to share such a great series. Obviously a lot of preparation and work to accomplish what from the outside looks easy to do. It's not. Again, so appreciate all your efforts and look forward to the next one. Best, Miguel

Andrew Marr thanks Andrew, indeed I have, videos like yours help others think of things they may otherwise have overlooked, the map I have seen on line, but is easy to forget about, so thanks for the reminder! Iceland seems to offer so much and not too far for me. Lightning is also something I have always wanted to photograph, so making a plan to do that somewhere either in the US or possibly middle east as November is storm season.. Best wishes. simon.

Andrew, an excellent way to cap off your trip by sharing your trip information. I think you maximised the opportunity by the amount of content you produced and certainly for anyone thinking of going there, you have provided great images and background information for others to consider. Your channel and others like it are great ways of sharing experiences and information. I bought a fold up solar panel earlier this year as this also provides an alternative to charging should the car option not always be available and with three charging sockets its been a great purchase. (Purchased it after seeing one being used on Mr Heaton's Iceland vlogs). Hope your getting time back home to get out and about

I think it's always good to share experience with other, it might not always be the best way of dong things, it's just the way I did it. I love learning from others. Great tip on the solar charger, that could be a great solution, particularly in Australia, I might check them out. How have you found the one you use?

Hi Andrew. I definitely don't have a trip to Iceland in my near future... but I did enjoy hearing your thoughts... and maybe I even picked up a few tips too (I'll just have to apply them to my next trip to Albany instead!) I must admit I started your video with no intention of making it through all 29 minutes... but I did enjoy it all! Thanks for sharing a bit of your channel background too - It was interesting to hear that your very first vlogs were all in preparation for your Iceland trip - you must be pretty pleased with how it has all turned out and, in a way, you've come full circle! Looking forward to your next videos (and hopefully you don't run out of places to photograph around Perth!)

That's why I added the contents with timestamps in the description. Thanks so much for sitting through it all. Yeah, the channel was all a lead up to Iceland, so now I've done the trip I'll close the channel down...or alternatively I could find some other location around Perth to visit! :)

Hi Andrew, I loved your Iceland experience vlog packed with very helpful information. I am hoping to get there in 2019 and the information you have given will add to my research very well. I have a daughter who has been there twice and has loved the trip and the photography. I am traveling to Europe and the UK in September and the trickiest part is to get the camera gear onto the flights and keep under the 7kg weight limit. Fortunately my wife will cary 50% so we can conform to the regulations that seem to be getting stricter as time goes on. Great vlogs, I enjoy your work and continue to follow your photographic journey.

Gidday Andrew, thanks for the information, images and video that you shot while in Iceland. I thought you covered it really well. You mentioned sleep Ha! You were looking pretty tired by the end of that trip, i think you were running on vapors by the end, lol. Can’t blame you there, in such a place as Iceland, I would be at it 22 hours a day too. I know when I’m excited at being at an amazing location the adrenaline kicks in it’s amazing how fast the time goes by and just how many hours you can put in. Every Sunday morning when i wake up in the USA there’s your youtube upload. It’s better than reading the Sunday Paper Ha! Have good one Mate! Wes

Haha, thanks Wes, you're right I was buggered by the end, it took nearly a week for me to recovered from the lack of sleep and jet lag...but yeah it was all worth it and I'd do it again if I could tomorrow. It's so nice to know how people consume the videos, i think it's very motivating for me to work hard on the next video, thanks buddy!

Just back from a week in Iceland and visited most of the locations in your wonderful series of vlogs. We opted for overnight B & B accommodation at various locations and all this together with the car hire was organised by Icelandinc travel company 'Hey Iceland' which I can thoroughly recommend. Weather was very wet at times and road no. 1 was closed due to flooding when we were there but 'Hey Iceland' re-arranged our accommodation etc within 30 minutes of a phone call - excellent service. The wind was also problem for flying a drone so only got very short videos. But overall it was an unforgettable trip and would love to go back some day. Only issue I have is that my photographs don't look anything as good as yours!!!

Some useful tips. I've been 3 times already but only on photo tours, but would rather spend that money on a camper and exploring myself. Good to see you recommended that map though, as I just ordered the latest version a few days ago after debating whether or not to for a few years (it's not the cheapest, plus had other places on my list to visit before Iceland again). It was actually the second recommendation in an Iceland video so I'm sure that will help a lot with planning my next trip. Hopefully can make it back there soon since it looks like other places I really want to go won't be possible or easy to visit for a while.

Thanks for leaving a comment and sharing your thoughts. Iceland is just one of those places that you could keep going back to again and again and not only find new locations but visit locations you know under vastly different conditions. I love the freedom and flexibly of travelling around and sleeping/living out of a vehicle as you don't have to worry about check in and check out times. I think after visiting three times though photography tours you'll be well prepared for a self-exploring tour of the country. While I planned before hand where I was going to go the map proved to invaluable while I was there to find locations on the ways and allowed me to adjust my plans due to weather, something you're guaranteed to have to do. All the best for your next Iceland adventure! 😀

Loved your Icelandic exploits, I plan on visiting next year, possibly september 2018 for two weeks, not decided on where to stay, a motor home sure sounds like the best plan though, maybe a few days in a hotel inbetween for home comforts. Thanks to youtube, i now have my own visitors map of the country, marking off places of interest to visit, even a section of a notebook with small prints of places to visit with little maps inside to guide me. I should have visited this year but work got in the way, at one point i had 3 jobs and studying for a diploma but now im just working one job while studying, so a bit more free time and next year i plan on taking things a bit more easily =)

Thanks Alexandra, I think September would be a wonderful time to go. Joe Nucich mentioned in the comments that he has just come back from 10 days in Iceland in September. He mentioned a couple of great website to check road conditions that you might want to check out, very handy that time of year. Mixing it up with a few days in a hotel is an excellent plan. Yes, I've found youtube helpful in the same way, sounds like things are going to work out well for you with work and travel plans. Best of luck with your trip!

I would say early September is the perfect time to go, the summer rush is mostly over and the most popular tourist spots are less busy, the weather is still mild, the days are still fairly long so you can get a lot done in the daylight, sunset is at a good time of day, plus the nights are dark enough to see the Northern lights. I was lucky to see the lights when I went in Sept. I would highly recommend the International Photographer map that Andrew recommends it highlights all the best spots to visit.

Thanks Carl, I enjoyed pretty mild weather while I was there. Lows around 8 degrees celsius at night, up to 12 during the day! When the sun came out or I was walking around I was quite warm, so I layered my clothing. I got away with out a base layer but some people might want thermals. I just had a t-shirt, mid-layer, and a good top layer that kept out the wind. Plus a waterproof coat when it rains or you get too close to those waterfalls.

Hi Chris, thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you found it interesting. Like Australia, I can't provide links for NZ viewers to use, local vendors are your best bet. My carry on came to 8.5kg (not including a laptop and small camera). So I was definitely over, but I was only questioned once about it. When I mention it was camera gear they stuck an approved sticker on the bag and I was never bothered again. It was my biggest fear, and I'm looking seriously at lightening my camera gear. I'm also considering NZ for my next landscape trip!

The problem we have as photographers is that there's too much self criticism of our own work. You may think your photographs are not worthy just yet but Andrew I was in the game for some 12 years, shot a ton of work for magazines and commercial assignments and when it comes to critical analysis, and believe me, I've studied your photographs in some detail, they are more than worthy. This game is one of chance, networking and unadulterated luck. Rejection and fear of it is part of the game. I shared an inner city studio with a fellow commercial photographer who like you was unsure of his work as a landscaper, now he exhibits all over the U.K. It only takes one gallery and your off! Take care mate. Greg

Great video, Andrew! I just got back from 10 days in Iceland on Sept 29, 2017. I drove around the island in a rented car. I spent 5 days in Akureyri since one of my goals was to shoot the Northern Lights. I recommend before any road trips to check en.vedur.is/ and www.road.is/ so you know what you're potentially driving into (I learned this the hard way, driving between Myvatn and Djupivogur, through a storm and just got through before the road closed). I will definitely go back but will plan better next time. I will pick a small area with the most interesting spots and explore it thoroughly. The western fjords look pretty spectacular.

Thanks Joe, pity I didn't have this video up earlier! The two websites you recommend are excellent, I should have included them in the video, so thanks for mentioning them here. I've heard the roads can get very dangerous when the weather gets extreme. I felt the approach of picking an area and exploring it worked for me but I'd definitely want to stay for longer if I went back! Did you manage to catch the Northern Lights?

On the night of Sept 24th I managed to get one shot that I liked. I had just finished shooting at Godafoss at dusk and I knew there would be Aurora that evening so I headed up Route 85 towards Húsavík because it looked unpopulated so I thought I could find a nice dark spot to shoot. I turned off on 852 and there was a parking area where I could set up. I posted one shot on Instagram @joe.nucich that I timed to have a truck edging into it. Of course the Aurora is fickle so the bright display lasted about 1 hour and then it started to cloud over. I just moved up to the full frame Nikon D750, from a Lumix GX7, and am still learning how to get the most out of it. So of course in my excitement to shoot the Aurora I forgot about pushing the ISO and going for longer exposures.

I travelled alone to Iceland,, so I did;t have my wife's carry on to distribute the weight. I was over 7kg, according to the airlines, that didn't include my laptop or small camera (my blogging camera). So I took a second carry on bag (small backpack) with that stuff. I had the 17-35 safely wrapped in my clothing in my checkin luggage and the rest came to about 8.5kg. In the six flights I took, Iwas questions once about the amount of carry on luggage I had and the second I mentioned it was camera gear, they slapped a sticker one it and let me through.
