Bought a 12 volt refrigerator/freezer four years ago this October. It isn't a dual zone, but runs very quiet on the maximum setting. The refrigerator is kept between 31° ~ 32° F., which is how I enjoy my drinking my whole milk. I don't even know what brand I purchased.

After your breakdown on the Iceco, I poked around and bought one. Not the dual zone, but a larger single zone. Will be backup to my RV fridge. Getting the list all crossed off, for the land yacht to be ready. She's got new shoes, and most all the bugs are shaken out of it. After a trip (cheap, I am sure!) to Cummins for service of engine and genny, will finally get Henrietta Hippo trundling around the West.. Only big project remaining is solar and new big batteries..... have to lay off for a while for that, been sorta setting fire to piles of cash!

Feature request from ICECO #1 build dual fans into the lid. This will help cool down or freeze food considerably faster. App controlled of course #2 include a paper template to scale so we can add insulation panels or fabric to the outside without interfering with the units cooling needs but increasing its efficiency #3 include a 12/24v power cable with crimped connectors for hardwiring the fridge. It does look beautiful and I’m sure the aluminum would hold up great in the marine saltwater environment as well. The light weight has me wondering though. 2 extra inches of insulation on all sides helps tremendously to keep compressor cycling low and energy consumption to a minimum. 👍👍

Fridges use a lot of battery. Question? Does a 120v ice maker use less battery power when combined with an efficient cooler? The benefit of an ice maker is that you always have ice for drinks. I would love to see your take on this. Keep up the good work! Cheers.

Hi Tom, here in the UK a van dweller is using a 240v fridge running off a smart inverter, as a household fridge is cheaper the a 12v compressor fridge, when the fridge gets to temperature it cuts off the smart inverter so it's not running all the time, could you try a test like this ? FYI, while this sandblasted style aluminium is better at this, metals and reflective material are (generally) very inaccurate with no-contact thermometers. What i usually do with things like server and computer chassis is put a piece of black electrical tape on the spot i want to measure, let it sit for a minute or 2, then measure from the tape and i often get a vastly different temperature. Sometimes its hotter than bare metal reradings, sometimes its cooler, because what i was actually measuring was a reflection from say the wall behind the device, or the exhaust of another server, and the surface was actually warmer/cool to than the thermometer was measuring. Edit, i'm not saying that these measurements were off, but they could be.

I've seen folks applying non-reflective tape to a reflective surface to get a more accurate temperature reading. Maybe white tape would do the trick if you're measuring temperature of a reflective surface in the sun?

No one is ever happy with this test. Some say full, half full, or empty. I'm doing empty from now on because it's worst case and tests the insulation and compressor the most. If you fill with food from a deep freezer the compressor won't kick on for hours. That's not an accurate test.

Doesn't aluminum transfer heat and cold very efficiently, thus making it easy to heat up in the heat and harder to stay cold? And won't the outside get hot if it's outside in the heat? Plastic is less efficient and thus holds the cold better because it doesn't hold heat. I'm I wrong about this? Edit: your outdoors test answered my question! Nice to know you're in Arizona. Edit 2: come to Phoenix and a day test in the sun.

Without explaining the physics, metal both heats and cools faster. The fact it is reflective and thin acts like a heat shield. It doesn't actually absorb and hold heat like thick plastic. They used very thin gold sheets on the Apollo missions to protect the capsule from direct heat of the sun.

I would be interested in this unit if I didn’t have such a bad experience with my first one dying on me, and the absolutely frustrating experience of getting ICECO to replace it. The replacement unit doesn’t work well, I suspect it will soon be dead because it’s having a hard time keeping 0 degrees, fluctuating up to 24 F in the shade. (It is used in a class A RV on a slide in the basement bay, powered by 120 volts ac)

The test is kinda useless. 1) power usage is drastically affected by the refrigerator's contents' thermal mass. 2) If you use one side as a freezer, the power usage skyrockets. Since this is a dual zone fridge, the test should have been done with one side running as a freezer.

  • @merendell

contents really only effect the power usage when you are trying to change the temperature of the contents. It takes alot of energy to cool a galon of 70 degree water down to 37 degrees. However if you already have that gallon at 37 degrees the fridge does not need to work as hard to keep it there. At that point its basicly just a test of the insulation of the compartment and how much power the compressor needs to compensate for heat transfer to the outside. More thermal mass will dampen out the swings in temp but you'll still be looking at a similar amount of power consumed to keep the compartment at a given temp, it will just cycle more often without any thermal mass to cool.

@@merendell 1) It's "affects" and not "effects". 2) You're making a meaningless point. Part of the test of a fridge's power usage *always* includes some aspect of its insulation (otherwise it would never cool). So WTF is your point? A proper test would be to measure how much energy would be used with a fixed mass (or a fixed percentage of a mass) at a given target temperature with that mass already at that temperature.

Test was ran with one side as freezer. I mentioned twice one side was 37 other side 0. I can never make anyone happy with this test as people complain if it's full, half full, or empty. I now do what's more consistent, and that's run empty as it tests the insulation and compressor the most.

I wouldn't want an Aluminum fridge. Aluminum dents and scratches way, way too easily (It's elemental, so don't. tell me that it doesn't). Stainless steel is far better for a fridge application.
