Ice cold arctic weather makes trapping difficult | trapper stories ep5

Ойын-сауық

The trapping hunting grounds do not meet the expectations and the weather is ice cold in the arctic. Unusual strong winds are blowing.

Isn’t more economical to raise pine martens? Instead of spending all your time without results? You can still have winter expeditions and fun outdoors, but at least you can pay your bills.

Hi @crazycoyote1738, an important part of the pine marten trapping is to reduce the predator pressure on the bird population, especially the 5 types of grouses we have here. Finland is one of the last refugium for capercaillie, black grouse, willow grouse, hazel grouse and ptarmigan. Because of the spread of the human a lot of predators bypass natural selection by the wide availability of food to them due to the human. Other animals suffer from that unnatural high predator population (note red fox wouldn't be up here at all normally). From a financial perspective the pine marten trapping is not very valuable and it can be that I do not do it any more next year and concentrate more on red foxes which are the bigger issue.

@@nomadic-trapper I understand, thank you for explaining. May be you can combine both, so you can help the grouse and also make profit. Be well and good luck!
