Ibrahim Mahama on making Purple Hibiscus

Ойын-сауық

Ibrahim Mahama's Purple Hibiscus is free to visit until Wed 17 July.
"It's almost like the Barbican has grown a new skin."
We sat down with artist Ibrahim Mahama to talk to him about our latest commission Purple Hibiscus, which sees 2000 square metres of vibrant, hand-woven fabric from Ghana envelop our Lakeside facade.
We are delighted to have Purple Hibiscus bringing colour and intrigue to our building from April until August 2024. We asked the artist behind the work where his inspiration came from, how his collaborative practice works, and why he strayed away from his usual sublime, earthy tones to something so bright and vibrant for this piece.
