My other keyboard reviews: • Thomas' Keyboard Reviews
I'm Thomas and I do keyboard videos and reviews. Today we look at the keyboard from the IBM Wheelwriter, the successor of the popular Selectric typewriter. Although I no longer ahve the accompanying printer, I still have the keyboard module.
The practice sentence was: "Hello my name is Thomas and I'm typing on an IBM Wheelwriter keyboard right now. Although just a shell of its former self, it's still a fun piece of history."

    Just ordered a Matias Quiet Click, so keyboards on the brain, and I've been jonesing for a review, man, thanks. My friend had a Selectric II, and I got a daisy-wheel knock off with the two-line deluxe display. We made fanzines. It was possibly not as notable as the Selectric because it was about 1/4 as loud. The Selectric sounded like a .50 cal machine gun.

    love you’re channel. I just find it.. You know something I just already got one IBM Wheelwriter 6 and is in amazing and cool machine cause I can feel the click and sound of the keyboard . I remember in the 1986 0r 87 when I saw this typewriter for me it was super cool. and no matter what this is when the computers started individually or in the companies. I love this typewriter specially IBM Wheelwriters.. I got it in Ebay and if you want or future is much shipper then amazon.. trust me.. Congrats for the channel .

    I learned to type on one of the daisy ball daisy wheel ones in High School. IIRC we might have had one of these as well. On the other side of the room were a row of Mac Classic's. Yup I'm feeling old now!.

    I've just spotted one of these in a local junk shop for about £3 NO I'M NOT TELLING YOU WHERE. This is the slightly older model without the T-nav cursor keys. I hope it's broken; I'm not sure I could forgive myself for ruining an IBM typewriter just for the keyboard unit.

    Cool video, especially the keycaps are gorgeous. Does the spacebar also fit the model m? If so I am going to hunt one of these down to replace the yellowed one on mine.

    Found one of these at the recycing centre as "scenery" today, and I loved the key feel, but the keypress (and the machine!) were a little too heavy for me.

    I never paid close attention to your hands during your typing demonstrations and I just now noticed you use your left hand for everything to the left of U, J and N rather than everything to the left of Y, H and N. Any reason for it? Then again I'm a touchtyping mutant too, I hit B with my right index finger.

    I just never bothered to learn to touch type properly. I can type without looking at the keyboard, though. Also, in these videos, I'm kinda cramped, because I have to reach around a huge amount of stuff to reach the other side of the keyboard xD .

    Are some typewriters good sources for older mechanical switches? I've seen several at secondhand shops near me for cheap and some of them have felt like they used mechanical switches though I'm not sure what kind.

  • @Chyrosran22

    @Chyrosran22

    SOME did, yes. Many used fairly cheap systems that often sucked balls. But there are a few interesting ones.

    nice, I have a wheelwriter 3 that I hooked up to a teensy with qmk. yeah it's almost like a 60% buckling spring...i replaced the keys on the side with some green caps from unicomp and I'm making a wooden bezel. ..turns out to be bigger than a full size though so completely kills the 60% concept

    I'm just wondering, do you happen to know what sort of keycaps are used on the black Model M13? I managed to get one of these (the Maxi Switch-manufactured version - it feels just like the beige 1990 Model M and 1987 Model M SSK I normally use, but the keyboard has a louder plastic clack while I type on it, kinda makes me think of the 2009 Unicomp keyboard you reviewed) and I'm not sure if these are the same dye-sublimated PBT caps, especially with the right shift on my keyboard having been worn down to the point where Shift is completely missing from the key and the part of the arrow is gone as well. I would think it's pad printing, but I really don't know.

  • @Chyrosran22

    @Chyrosran22

    7 жыл бұрын

    The M13 doesn't use dye-sublimed caps; dye-sublimation can only make legends that are DARKER than the keycap material. I don't have an M13, but I imagine it uses either pad printing or infilled legends (common on WoB keycaps). Considering how even the lettering looks on all M13 pictures I can find, I'm going to guess pad printing.

  • @Ace9921

    @Ace9921

    7 жыл бұрын

    That would be my guess too considering the right Shift key's legends are pretty badly worn out on my M13. Now, there are some beige variants of the M13, and I would think those could possibly use dye-sublimated caps. From what you're saying, the caps on the black M13s are definitely not dye-sublimated, but I would expect the beige ones to be.

    You can wire the matrix up to a model f xwhatsit to get those pc compatible and reprogrammable. I still moved the caps from mine to my f107 though.... Nevertheless it's a kick ass board.

    I assumed this would be the case. Why would IBM reinvent the wheel and not use a standard they already established? That would not be IBM like at all.

    It seems like typewriter modules have a lot of rattle to their sound. I guess that's to be expected, though it makes me think that the Smith Corona module would sound a lot better if it was mounted to something.

    No, the Model M is a membrane keyboard. You might have it confused with the Model F.

    I think the ball prints faster than the daisy. I remember seeing ball printers in the early 1980s and they were pretty fast. Geometrically the ball seems faster but if we consider the inertia of the whole system perhaps the daisy ends up being faster. Interestingly, fewer wheel type IBM machines have survived while I heard that if you're lucky you can even find Selectrics on dumpsters and they could be put back in working condition.

    you can use an arduino uno or simlilar board. there are a few libraries of keyboard firmware available, that you can freely configure to fit your layout. the connectors of the membranes fit into normal 2,54mm flatflex connectors.

    Ah, yes, the wheelwriter keycaps. My wheelwriter 6 series ii (slightly older) has light blue sub legends on some of the keys, although most of them are light green. I think one of the key caps even has a blue main legend and a green sub legend.
