Was on the fence between this cloud burst one and the other new 'caribbean' inspired models, the RG1120PBZ-CIF and the beautiful RG6PPBFX-TSR (no trem though). Went with the RG6PPBFX, hope you get a chance to review one of those..

Great review and a great guitar. Maybe the hum is due to DiMarzio's asymmetrical winding in the pickup coils. That's used to shape the frequency response to desired direction (two resonant peaks). The downside is increased hum.

I have the black version of this guitar and it is a work of art! I love it! At a fraction of the cost this guitar out performs others that I bought for 3 or 4 times the price. I can't put it down. The only issue I have is that the single volume control has no 'gradation' to it. I'm sure there a more appropriate word but the volume doesn't slowly increase as I roll it up. It seems to just virtually come on almost all at once. Like from zero to 80% in the first little twist of the knob. For example; there is no way to do Jeff Beck style swells (violin like) by rolling the knob. This also means that you can't roll the volume back just a touch to clean up the tone. I wonder if I have to install a new volume potentiometer. It was like this when I bought it new and should have spoken up at that time. This is my first Ibanez. Any thoughts on this? By the way, I loved your video and your playing! You're a maniac on this thing!

Wonderful review! Also a great sound! First of all, amazing guitar! :) I have the same guitar, and some RG550 too, but there is no hum on high gain settings with these pickups at all (i uploaded one video playing with True Velvet, so close to the amp,and lots of gain, and there is hum, but not on Humbuckers). The problem could be causet by the rest of your gear. Maybe power supply or... maybe there is too much devices plugged in one power soak, including your computer, tube amp, loadbox etc. Locking tuners are very useful when you putting new strings, or when you are setting intonation. I really enjoyed this video, and now i love my RG1070 even more! :))))

Just my 2 cents. The locking tuners are not overkill as their purpose isn't for locking in tune or anything. They are there to make restringing easier as you don't have to wind the string around like traditional tuners.

Well, it makes controlling string aging nearly impossible since shafts are too short for that. It's ok if the guitar never leaves the house. But with 90+ gigs a year it's a pure headache

Easy change, l did like the soft cases l have seen that came with earlier models but that bag might be a nice bag to have being the only guitar l have with a bag is my Taylor GSmini and its a very nice bag but all my (around 20) guitars have hard cases.. l really loke this guitar..l have a LP, SG, Strats, a tele and others but none are this type.. l have no guitars with SS frets and l like the ldea of SS being it does last..do all of this models come with fret ends done so beautifully?? I have several guitars with trem systems.. none are Floyds..how does this rank in the world of Floyds?? I would think the trem arm play would be another area in uour test being so many arms are cluncky with play while others are snug and precise without play.. Great vid!! Thank you!

There were few issues that I've found and I fixed them just like the string alignment issues casued by the softcase. But the pickup humming problem just hunting me and I can't find a way to fix it. It's it the wiring problem? Or it just cant be fixed? Looking for your reply. :)

  • @MaxSoloMusic

That hum comes from the pickups being asymmetrical. Which means coils within the pickup are not the same, they produce different tone and therefore there's no 100% hum cancellation. These particular pickups, Air Norton and the Tone Zone have this problem and seem to be affected by electromagnetic fields nearby. Try to move 6-10 meters away from where you are and chances are you'll hear some difference. I got "lucky" and the room I use as a studio is polluted with some electromagnetism. In the living room though this guitar feels much better and there's almost no hum

  • @MaxSoloMusic

    @MaxSoloMusic

Thanks. Yeah, two things. First, alnico based pickups tend to attract more noise in some situations. The best example would be the EMG Retro Active Hot 70 set with both pickups absolutely identical other than the magnet type. The alnico based neck pickup has a very high level of hum despite of being an (almost) 'active' pickup. Second, those DiMarzios are asymmetrical, meaning their coils have different number of windings. Therefore, they don't really match the definition of humbuckers and in some situations will catch an amount of hum comparable to single coils

For some reason I have the same problem on my Rg1070pbz aswell, And the bad things is that when I use it with a powerful Processor like Gt100 or Helix,, the noise is everywhere in the body. And the neck profile isnt thin like the Prestige guitars, aswell as I noticed that this guitar cant be put into low action very well, and starts to have string buzz issues everywhere. Ibanez should think about this... because it's still not a cheap guitar. Really pissed of for this with Ibanez

I have Gotoh's on mine as well. Its not overkill when you need a fast string change. Remember you still have to string the guitar and get it near tune before locking down the neck. So,... you are wasting a lot of time with winds, instead of a quick pull thru, lock, tighten, tune.

I had an old Ibanez Rg170 something like that. It was definitely basswood because it's a soft wood that got a lot of dents. I always had to be extra careful with it. Glad I sold while it was still in one piece. It's only mahogany for me. Sounds dark but I keep the eq on my amp a bit more on the treble and it lightens up. Just an opinion bro, you don't need to take tonewood too seriously. Regards

About the whole: "locking tuners on a locking nut guitar are overkill"-thing: Locking tuners alone, don´t do anything to improve tuning stabillity, that´s a widely spread misconception. The point of a locking tuner,is to make string changing easier because the string gets locked in. More important for tuning stabillity are the nut (if it´s cut properly and made out of good material) and the shape/angle of the headstock,in a guitar without a locking nut of course. Also, about the noisey humbuckers: That is definetely NOT normal for DiMarzio Tone Zone/Air Norton pickups.I have tried Prestige Ibanez RG´s with the same pickup combo over the years and never seen anything like this,WTF?!

I have the new RG421 and the pickups finally make sense since that guitar has a coil split switch. Yes, the hum is higher than normal but the sound of split pickups is really good. I slowly but surely begin to dig them now

Schecter, LTD, Solar, Prestige? Спасибо!

I am thinking I would like to move up from my GIO GRG140 to either this one or the RG550. That hum noise is not good to my ears but could it be reduced by using a noise gate pedal?

1070 is discontinued now. You won't find them in stores. But yeah, noise gate helps. And there's a good chance you won't experience that much hum. It's something in my room or somewhere in the house that makes pickups hum like crazy, exposing all possible problems

First time watching your channel, you seem to think the way most guitarists do, we think $1000 bucks is an EXPENSIVE guitar, for anything more, we expect flawlessness, perfection, this is unreasonable but so is spending$1000 or more when we ain't rockstars and do have responsibilities to family.. so yes, I want the best, but I can't have it for a max $1000.00, but I'm rockin' a Ibanez, albeit Chinese...

Man i have another noisy guitar. I still use it but sometimes it sucks depending on whats around/where i am. I always think "i need to get a noise gate" but still dont have one. I do have an eq in the loop of my big amp and somehow that helps a bit. Also wireless thingys help but can suffer from other signal producing stuff. Idk i like those abd really should get a gate anyways

I bought this guitar about 2 years ago and immediately sent it back. It just had too much fretbuzz out of the box with the action being higher than you expect from an ibanez. Went online and bought a 2003 prestige for half the money instead

The pickup issue is very unfortunate. A potential dealbreaker if the point for buying would be to record music. Probably not so much a deal breaker if only used at shows or for rehersal, or practicing at home. But then again, such a beautiful guitar is not necissary for just practicing at home. So what to think? Perhaps we live in a world full of 1sr world problems? But then again, when recording!

Ugh that's the guitar with the black line on it. Ibanez I won't buy this guitar just because of that line. Learn to wrap that top ok? Great playing dude! Ibanez loves having holes in their boxes. Usually it's a knob doing it. I would give them a +1 on the "overkill" on that Gotohs. There's never anything wrong with building a more robust product.
