I was you tubing tonight and started to listen water music from Handel, shifted to Lully, Charpentier, Henry, Stockhausen and Xenakis. As would say Louis Amstrong : "what a wonderful world". Sublime ! All these composers, all these styles... They reflect how elevated can be the human mind. We deeply need those in these times of international barbarism...

This is stochastic music that is method of composition in 20th century classical music developed by Iannis Xenakis and described in his book Formalized Music. Stochastic music heavily borrows from mathematics such as law of large numbers, probability theory, game theory, Boolean algebra, Markovian chain, Poisson law, group theory and so on. This mathematical means are used to guide the indeterminism. This method is different to Indeterminacy, where the randomness is not guided by mathematical or other such laws. Also, the output of stochastic processes is usually fixed in the traditional score in the end, but Indeterminacy often uses open scores and even alternative notations.

I'm just starting to work through "Formalized Music" right now. Whoa, what a dense and difficult read! But it's fascinating to see some of his scores, in both conventional musical notation side-by-side with the graphical representations upon which they are based. This was a lot of very hard work, and gives me a deeper appreciation of his art.

The word "Music" comes from the greek word Muse (Μούσα) which comes from the verb μάω meaning "to invent, to think". In greek mythology there were 9 Μuses, one for each art. The Μuse of Music was "Ευτέρπη" which means she who causes satisfaction. There is no music without humans so we have to find its roots in the human body. Music is an art which occupies many parts of the human brain like the centers of hearing, emotion, creativity etc. Even though ears are in the side of the head, which may mean that hearing is secondary to seeing, i think music goes deeper than painting. Also there is an ancient philosophical concept about the "music of the spheres", which relates the structure of the Cosmos to a universal Music. You can also find this beautiful thought in J.R.R. Tolkien's book Silmarillion.

Caro Alvaro, Xenakis has been a leader of a resistance cell in Greece during WW II, and an explosion resulted in profound wounds to his face, he lost his left eye and might die, being in coma for two weeks, but due to any possible medical treatment his father secured for him, he returned to life. Brief, his life is the theme for a movie...

@@speravi1000 He caught a piece of shrapnel from an exploding jeep in his left cheek. He didn't lose his left eye, but he did lose sight in that eye. He was evidently pretty self-conscious about his disfigurement for many years because he insisted on being photographed in profile, as above. However, beyond a certain age, he must have stopped being too concerned about it. It really wasn't that bad, giving his face more "character" -- he wasn't scary looking or anything. Plus, he was such a good-natured fellow that he like to smile and laugh, and that softened his features a lot. There are some good videos on KZread of him being interviewed (in English) -- check them out!
