Ian Ginoza on Making Sneaker Magic With Virgil Abloh, Huf, Nike and Vans | The Complex Sneakers Show
Ian Ginoza has worked in sneakers for decades, playing a part in collaborative projects with the likes of Drake, Tom Sachs, Beyonce, Ye, Frank Ocean, and more. He started the Honolulu sneaker store Kicks HI, then did stints at Converse, Nike and Adidas. Now, he’s the global vice president and creative director of pinnacle product at Vans. Ginoza has mostly worked in the background, opting to let his work speak for itself. Here, he tells the story of his life in the industry and how he ended up at Vans. Also, cohosts Joe La Puma, Brendan Dunne, and Matt Welty discuss Bode x Nike Astro Grabbers and try not to discuss the Air Max Dn. One of the best episodes really. I’m guessing he doesn’t love being in front of a camera and all that but he and y’all killed it. And as a non skater who’s always loved it from a slight distance, they truly are the creators of so much. On a personal and societal level.
Growing up in Hawaii, kicks was the mainstay. Leilow was also so so cool. Jules is so knowledgeable. Thanks for having Ian on.

Ian was a great guest. Love the stories and history. I was able to buy the Off-White converse....but got my sizing wrong and bought a full size too small. Huge regret to miss out on my size but huge payout when I was forced to sell them. Crazy memories.

Something that people don’t talk about enough is that in order to reach the that point you have to come from a certain level of affluence that way you can have the ability to gain “credit” with the fashion and sneaker culture. Welty, Brendan, and Joe all come from a middle class background. There needs to be more lower class representation in the culture. Much needed in this day and age.

Yes , we would use marker to cover the Union Jack if our parents bought us Reeboks as kids. Mcgregor was never wearing them obviously , just mainly the ufc apparel or training gear..not classic white and gum sole reeboks with a Union Jack. Joe was right not to ask it on sneaker shopping! Kinda shows the difference between Joe and Brendan’s views on interviewing

I totally agree. Clearly he’s respected and creative but I had to Google him to actually find out what exactly he did with these brands and people. A lot of cooking and industry names but no details. Most stuff he didn’t remember. He was there. He helped. Then moved on. Ok.
