I Work More Than 40 Hours A Week And l'm Homeless

The United States’ cheapest city isn’t inexpensive enough for the thousands who have found themselves without shelter. Huntsville, AL, is expecting an increase in its homeless population as the city’s cost of living and population rise. America doesn't have a housing problem, it has a greed problem. There's virtually no good reason for housing prices to have skyrocketed the way they did. And there are more than enough [abandoned] spaces that can either be built or renovated/decorated in order to give people a proper place to live. But impossible bureaucracy, zoning laws, and other obstacles make it so that more and more people find themselves in dire straits while working harder than ever to support themselves and their families. Stop catering to the rich and start caring about your citizens, USA.

Yep investors have been scouring my dads neighborhood in Texas offering to buy up everyone’s houses for cash. My dad told them to f*ck off. The neighborhood I grew up in used to be filled with children and young families. Now just old people because young families can’t afford the neighborhood anymore. So sad.

Sadly most of your tax money goes to things rich people and politicians needs , not your local community or what’s needed for everyone, you’re giving the government back money so they can hoard for themselves and specific groups only :( I’ve seen people in both red and blue states live like this and it’s sad bc most people work their asses off and don’t get what they need and some just give up and let the streets take them over sadly , I had a teacher that was doing good and later on this year he’s on the street homeless and living in his car bc rent is to high , people who don’t have to worry ignore it and don’t say anything bc they’re getting the benefits instead

That's what I tell everyone, while a lot of people who are homeless do have mental problems and addiction (I never actually thought it was laziness) a lot of them are working homeless. They work full-time jobs, with okay pay, but can't afford to rent anything. I mean, you see this family with the 4 kids have a nice car, but they can't afford to rent anything, it seems so backward. Also, the fact that only one of them can work since childcare is so expensive, it's cheaper for the one that earns the least to stay home.

I've rented the same "old school" single wide 2 bedroom mobile on acreage in the woods for almost a quarter of a century. My landlord, a now-retired 6th generation dairy farmer who calls me a "lifetime tenant" and "the best tenant any landlord could hope for" and his family consider me "family" and I'm still only paying $600 a month. When I had stage 3 cancer 14 years ago they told me that no matter what happens they'd never put me out and I'd always have a roof over my head. They kept their word. I know my situation is very rare and I've never felt more grateful and fortunate.

You are fortunate indeed. My husband had a similar situation. His first wife became ill with liver failure early into their marriage and they had 4 kids to take care of in a blended family. They were renting a crappy single-wide trailer from an out-of-state landlord, who kindly allowed them to make interest-only payments when things were at their worst because they were good tenants who kept the place clean and always paid on time. His wife unfortunately died, but hubby eventually paid off the trailer and sold it - for the same price he paid for it - to a young family dealing with similar circumstances.

I can attest to this fact. I used to live in Huntsville and stayed at the EXACT same family shelter (first one shown) We had room 2. We left in 2019 to move to Michigan and never looked back. The way we could do this is my husband is a truck driver. My little girl was 4 at the time and could ride on the truck with us. So we packed up a few of our things and lived on an 18 wheeler for over a year. And now we are lucky to have our own home in Southeast Michigan. I still have nightmares about being homeless it has definitely traumatized me and my little family.

@little drane yeah, get fat off of the food that people are poisoned with, then go into debt with the medical bills they have to pay for the preventable diseases they have from the cancerous foods they’ve been eating, which is cheaper and pushed in lower income neighborhoods. Not to mention cigarette companies targeting people of lower income, especially those of color. What do poor people who see no way out and have high stress levels do? Oh yeah, smoke cigarettes and do drugs. I’m not saying that personal responsibility doesn’t exist, but most people are sheep; they live their lives in the way things have been laid out to them. Sure, individuals have the power to get themselves out of poverty and to make better choices, but societies don’t work at an individual level entirely. Humans are social creates that behave in a collective way, and to really change the system, things have to change from a structural societal level and not just with a few everyday individuals. It’s the same thing with climate change. Being a waste free, all organic, local buying individual will not remedy the climate crises. It goes beyond an individual level. The small minority of people at the top are largely to blame, while everyone else has no choice but to feed Into it the crises that’s been unscrupulously laid out upon them.

If you're someone that prioritizes video games over learning a marketable skill, even as you watch your savings deplete and knowing landlords love raising rent on top of that, you've asked for your problems - and even more top of all, that you're insisting on wanting to feel the pleasure through not using a condom.

Unfortunately the other issue is that the husband has to stay home because their kids are simply too young and I’m pretty sure they cannot afford childcare, I think even if they got some sort of childcare vouchers that would allow the husband to go to work also which would only help the family financial situation. The cost of housing has reached critical levels and is at a breaking point quite frankly something has to be done, she’s absolutely right.

Unfortunately, we don't qualify for those vouchers right now. Both parents must be employed before you receive your voucher. If we paid full price for childcare, it would cost more for my husband to work than he would make. That's why he's a SAHD.

Problem goes further than the childcare vouchers. Even if the husband was able to get vouchers and go to work being on food stamps means even if he did go to work the family could possibly lose money and stamps. Not to mention because the voucher is based on household income rent would also go up. Making it near impossible to gain any more wealth. So if the husband did go to work your now going to work to pay cash instead of stamps while strangers watch your children.

I remember working for $2.65 an hour when I was 20 years old. Gross pay was $400 for working a 40 hour a week job, a lot less after taxes. My rent was $200. I could not afford car insurance, I car pooled with a coworker, paid for gas, I had no money for car maintenance. I had no health insurance, no dental coverage, nothing. I got another part time job that also paid minimum wage of $2.65 an hour. So I was working two jobs. This was in 1978 in California. I was struggling, couldn't make it and moved back in with my parents. This country has never paid enough for us to survive. You've got to have 2-3 jobs and split the rent with several roommates to just get by. Those were hard times. I survived but just barely.

Since then, they had several more children. It’s clear these parents are working very hard to provide for their kids but I do wonder how the decision making process works when a couple is already broke, staying with family and unable to afford a home, yet wind up pregnant several more times. Certainly more affordable homes are needed, more skewers are needed, that’s all very clear. However, there must be personal responsibility too. Had activities for the kids. I was completely devastated. Took me a very long time to recover from all that trauma. That man beat me, financially and spiritually abused me and raped me. I had nothing, no family, no friends anymore, no savings , nothing. But if I didn't run I might be dead. It's incredibly hard to be homeless, it's 10 times harder to be homeless with little kids. Plus, childcare is as much as some people make altogether. Personally, I have chosen to not have children in order afford a livelihood. But as a society we can’t punish parents for having children, because it hurts their innocent children. And sometimes people’s financial situation changes, even if they had planned things in the beginning.

@@pierre-rose7783 I never said anything about that. You just filled in the lines. There’s sooo many aspects to your logic which I could address, but I don’t have time. Here’s the important points: Childcare workers usually have a caseload of 3-10 kids each. So, there’s no reason parents should pay a 1:1 salary (or even close to it) for each child in childcare. Also, there should be government subsidies that underwrite childcare, as an investment in society and future generations. If I were a parent I’d take care of other people’s children, as a way to avoid paying for my own kids’ childcare and a way to earn a salary. I don’t know why parents don’t do that more often, especially since childcare is hard to come by and expensive.

My dad was an engineer, he had 7 kids he could comfortably afford and even provided us with private education. He had a stroke younger than most stroke patients do. He had to live in a hospital then medical rehabilitation center for over a year. It cost basically his entire savings. Lucky for us he started having kids young so my youngest sibling was 19 at this time and some of us already had careers of our own and could make sure the family was provided for. If he had waited to have kids until later in life like many people with careers do half of us would have been under 10 when this happened. We would be financially devastated and probably homeless.

After you have been in a poverty type situation for so long and things aren't getting any better, they should tell people like this that if they have any more children, they will absolutely not ever get a dime in assistance or they will be arrested for bringing another child into the world only to suffer in such horrible conditions, which is pretty much child abuse. I mean after you have already done it so many times, by the time you are on the third or fourth child and in the same situation, there truly isn't any excuse. If you are not financially stable and have not been for some time, you have absolutely no right to bring another child into the world when you can't even support yourself or the children you already do have, yet they do and they expect everyone else to help them. It is bs.

Like, how do they look at someone like this mother and tell her that she’s “just being lazy and looking for handouts” or that she “just needs to work harder to be successful”? There is no social safety net in this country anymore, and so many people want to place blame on those that are struggling economically. I think they blame others so they don't have to think about the fact that they could be in the same sinking financial boat pretty easily. For most people, one terrible illness or a job loss could bankrupt them. And, most of the ultra wealthy are completely out of touch with middle class and lower struggles.

I can’t remember the last time a video got me this emotional. I’ve volunteered through Habitat for Humanity and it showed me how easily it is for people to be housing insecure. These aren’t lazy people who don’t want to work. These are people who live in places that set them up to fail with all their rules, regulations, and greediness. And while it’s good to see growth in a city, it has posed huge issues for gentrification.

Why on earth would you keep having kids or putting yourself at risk to have more kids when you can't afford to take care of them? Let's be real. If they didnt have kids or stopped at 1 or even 2, their situation would be way different. They would probably still not be making a lot of money, but they would at least have less mouths to feed and all of the other costs and such that come with having kids.
