Great little lesson, thanks! People forget, Hendrix was a former session player. You totally have to understand chord/scale relationships and metre changes, often on the fly, to do that.

Protos Telos Many musicians- very talented ones that is- can do that by ear. They just hear and know what notes match their ears. And what chords are likely next based on common things they've hear a lot before (blues prog, 251, that kind of thing). I know people that don't know chords but improv in groups over the form even tho they don't technically know it. They hear when it starts up again and all that too

Jimi did know his theory for sure. Ive watched countless of his videos before they were all taken down by the Hendrix Experience Ltd. Etc. Their was a story going around that hendrix could only play left handed and that he really couldnt play right handed like a regular guitar player but i very clearly saw a video of him in an interview where the interviewer asked him if he really couldnt play right handed for say and jimi without hesitation flipped his guitar and started playing right handed like the rest of us and quickly started pointing out the notes he was playing as well as chords, but the problem came was that because he was so shy he quickly flipped the guitar back left handed and just laughed a little before going completely quite. Jimi did know his theory and the other story that i remember was when he came to new york as a back up rhthym guitarist for little richard i think it was that when he was going around clubs to sit in with other jazz musicians they wouldnt let him because he was too much to deal with so he'd rehearse out on the streets at night where he slept and complained that roaches used to steal his last piece of chocolate i believe which was really depressing to here. Thats when he was discovered by the girlfriend of chanse chandellor(cant spell his name) and i think by this point hendrix was well versed in theory he was just pouring creativity at this point and he damn sure knew he was at his musical best.

I think a lot of professional musicians know more about music theory than they lead on. Especially musicians that claim they can’t read a single note. I think over time as their music careers expands, they learn first hand from other musicians over the years. But they won’t openly admit it during interviews.

That's probably true in a lot of ways! I used to say that I knew nothing about music theory, but I could play almost anything that I wanted to if listened for a while and worked at it. After learning theory, I found that I was simply re-learning a lot of stuff that I was already familiar with! Thanks for watching! Hey Eric thanks for pinpointing yet another insight into Mr. James Marshall Hendrix. Here's a few things that might work for you From what has been said, about his childhood, did you know that his first guitar was a broom stick? Later on, Jimi was given a guitar by his Dad Al Hendrix. He was self taught, so at age 15, he probably had plenty of time to figure out what and how to play. It's also well known that Jimi was a very quiet, modest, and shy personality. Maybe he simply chose to play down what he knew, and let his skills do the talking. Again Eric, good lesson and thanks for sharing.

He didn't write it, but he did change the key that it was started it, I believe.

Great vid and well explained but it left me hanging. I was waiting all through to hear "why". I get that by using the circle of 5ths I know the number of sharps on each chord but why do I need to know that and what do I do with the information? Would make a great follow up video. Keep up the excellent content.

I'm just learning the circle of fifths and I'm helping a friend write a song and she picked the chord progression to be "C, C, F, F, F, F, Fm, C". I was wondering what type of chord progression is there in the circle of fifths, like what key would this be in. Also trying to see if maybe we can make it a little more interesting sounding sinces it just repeats that same chord progression. Thank you Eric!

Re: that chord sequence. It's in the key of C major. The Fm is not strictly a chord belonging to this key, but F - Fm is such a common move for songs in the key of C that your ear will hear the whole thing as being in C. 'I Got Rhythm', 'Space Oddity' and 'Don't Look Back In Anger' are examples of songs that do this. The most obvious chord to add to make it more interesting is G (or G7 if you prefer). You could also try using some minor chords from the key of C; these are Dm, Em and Am. If this is all new to you, go ahead and find out what harmonising a major scale is. Things should start to make a lot more sense then.

greetings Mr. Blackmon, yeah music and the people who create it r sometimes mysterious. Gosh yeah people prove all the time that knowledge of music theory is not absolutely vital to the process of creating good music. However , if ur gonna score an orchestra ya got to know theory, but Jimi was not trying to conduct the Boston pops, he was a guitar player when guitar was king eh? Can you think of any other instrument around 60-70 even 80's, but synthes were moving in big time then, that had more influence than the guitar. Seems like just the more you know about guitar and music in general, if ya can keep an open mind , opens up and renders some of this mysteries up more. Guitar is unique, it's fun, you can pick it up and have fun, play chords, bend notes, strum, pick,,,,etc. you got to have a mind to play it though, I think Jimi had some fundamental theory working, he just never learned it formally, he learned it through exploration and experience, and in accord to what he felt and wanted to hear, there is no working harmonic theory on ' feedback', it happens, if your quick and respond to it it's like an extra scale, bag a tricks ya know, a free note out of no where, just the right place and time , so Jimi definitely wasn't thinking theory performing those solos ha, ha,carry on bro, I enjoy your guitar videos

Dave, you nailed it in 2 words. OPEN MIND. That is the key. I played by ear for 40 years and did just fine. I made a living for years playing with ABSOLUTELY NO MUSIC THEORY KNOWLEDGE. One day I decided that it might be a good idea to understand music better since it was my means of support. I am so glad that I did. I now teach music FULL TIME and am on my way to having a 200k sub KZread channel. My "by ear" experience is just as important as the music theory knowledge that I have acquired. What is the value of knowing how many sharps there are ?

Someone will say " blues in A " or the key will be written on the chart so under which circumstances will knowing the number of sharps be useful ?

I did a Google search asking what key hey Joe is in. It says G major. So all the chords seem to make sense except for the E. Why isn't the E an E minor? Is that a borrowed chord or something?

The Standells recorded a version of the song, titled "Hey Joe, Where You Gonna Go", which was included on their 1966 Dirty Water album. well heres my take Jimmie's Father played a instrument i for get what so there was some background in music jimmies father would take jimmes guitar off of him at night when he fell a sleep at night so jimmie practiced all the time his father i beleve incuraged him im pritty old so jimmie was the guitar hero as many were back then he was not stupid ,it's so sad even to day .. that he is gone .. you have to wonder what he would be doing to day im sure he would have a lot to say .. after all he sayed a lot in his music..iv had a very hard time lerning to play my guitar and still am not very good .. thank you for the video this realy helps me a lot i wish you were my neighbor id be able to learn from you lol..... circle of 5th ??? how to aply it next thank you

Don't put too much stock in the circle of 5th. It is just a guide used to connect key notes together. Funny I watched a video yesterday where someone says Jimmy in fact did know theory... actually I know which one.. kzread.info/dash/bejne/m3ulsM6KnK2aetI.html , these guys (Dave Navarro and George Lynch [don't know who Lynch is]) start talking about not knowing music theory then one of them says "you know what I was always bummed about? I found out that Jimi Hendrix knew music theory" right about 3:03 in that video.. and that video is 7 years old and have no idea how I landed on it but it's certainly has to be a meaningful coincidence

I watched an interview with Jimi himself saying that he did not, but I think that when someone is that good, they have a better grip on music theory than the rest of us who study it. George Lynch is a famous rock guitar who was in a band called The Lynch Mob. Thanks for watching Space!

No problem, also Jimi played for a church band or something before he became a rock'n'roll star so that had to have had something to do with it. He has also described his music as "electric church music". No problem great videos thumbs up :)

I think when Jimi was young he played back up to many blues artists and knew way more than he was letting on. He probably just wanted to go home, rather than speak of theory..

Lots of people don't know music theory. They just play. I played music all my life and got paid for it. Did not learn any theory until I quit touring and sat down and learned it. Who cares about how many sharps and flats are in the key, when plays guitar? Thats for piano, how many black keys are in the key. Guitar is pattern based, so its, just good to know for the theory
