    I have a BS in Healthcare Administration, I had no intention of ever being a " hospital administrator." As stated, its a fantastic degree for someone already working in the healthcare space who wants to learn more about the industry and needs to move up the ladder. My career path in healthcare went Call Center Cust Svc > Claims Analyst > Jr Reports Analyst, > Reports Analyst (this is when I went back to university) > Sr. Business Analyst > Sr Healthcare Economics Consultant > Associate Director of Healthcare Economics. This is all the within the health plan space focusing recently on health data analytics for Medicare Advantage markets. Most of the people I work with have varying degrees from Economics, Statistics, Math to Engineering. This channel makes a very good point about not being to narrowly focused when looking for jobs in the healthcare space.

    Good review. My program advisor did tell me it would take at least 10 years to get a good health administrator role. I started with a CNA certification position then after I got my degree I started working in insurance, claims processing and now billing. Billing is decent 😅but I rather be doing coding which pays more 😅so I may go into that or get a health information management degree where I have more opportunities. 😊

    LOL 8:30-8:36 is so hilarious and relatable! You're so funny! Also, I see that you noted obtaining healthcare administration experience is something one should work on during undergrad and grad school. As an undergrad, I would love it if you could make a separate video discussing entry level positions a college student can pursue to fulfil that goal? Is medical scribing a good job to have as an undergrad health admin major if you are thinking about managing an outpatient medical practice when you graduate? What is the experience required for that?

  • @professorashley

    @professorashley

    2 жыл бұрын

    Medical scribing is great to do as an undergrad. It will help give you medical field experience and give that you will become so familiar with not just medical terminology, but actual medical procedures, it will put you in a good position for management later on. That being said, I believe you will have some more stepping stones in between scribing and management. I would advise you be on the look out for a good "manager mentor" while you're scribbing. That would give you some invaluable guidance to make it to management b the time you graduate.

Imposter syndrome - the persistent inability (aka the unreasonable and unhelpful and unhealthy denial of a certain reality, despite having completed education and engaged in growth of knowledge) to believe that one's success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one's own efforts or skills versus Awareness of own existing skills and training needs - may very well be a healthy insight... Please, should the decision to step forward for additional responsibilities not be subject to reflections and assessment of requirement and capabilities etc.? You should be looking for any position at either a doctors office, hospital, or facility such as an ambulatory surgical center. The field of healthcare really relies on job experience, so even if you have a masters in healthcare administration, they'll want to see your work experience. There's a lot that you can learn from being in the field that you will not learn in the classroom. If you can, try to get a billing position because I feel like that's the most versatile entry-level position and you'll learn the importance and reasoning behind the tasks that people do at the check-in and check-out desks. However, if you know absolutely nothing about healthcare, then get a receptionist or front desk position and learn the basic processes behind health care.

    A person going into healthcare Admin should have several years (at least five years) of previous experience in the medical field because a degree tends to cause a person's head to swell if they walk into a management position without prior experience.

    So true. Had mostly the exact same experience. Got my MBA in healthcare administration with limited experience. Had to work multiple jobs at the bottom before making it to where I am right now, which is middle management. Still working to get to an executive level role. My whole experience has been mostly in the hospital. Other points that are important in this field is that it is extremely difficult to break into! So finding and in/mentor is definitely important. Also, it is more preferred to hire clinicians such as nurses into administration roles because having clinical knowledge is viewed as more valuable than someone that does not. Finally, this is not a field for someone that cares about making money, if that’s your main goal than you should consider a different field. I could go on and on, but I’m sure you can relate.

    It’s a very difficult field. This is what most aren’t honest about at all and have people thinking they’re going to be making good money and let’s not get started on the work culture of these facilities or hospitals or offices. Healthcare tends to be toxic but all careers have a pros and cons, but I noticed once I got involved I’ve gotten depressed and I even have to file a eeoc lawsuit that I one recently against a healthcare company where I was a medical billing analyst. It’s crazy. That’s why I’m going to do something I like but also money is a major thing for me at this point because my goals aren’t to be working a 9-5pm for years to come.
