I Went Undercover at a Renaissance Faire
Комедия
Is the Clark Kent effect a real thing? I put it to the test to find out, going out at the Colorado Renaissance Festival after performing 4 shows earlier in the day to see if people would recognize me without the tight pants and drawn-on mustache.
Thanks to all my Patrons who help make videos like this possible. Check out my upcoming performance schedule at www.jackthewhipper.com

The only reason we went to the colorado Renaissance fair was to see jacques ze whipper . My son saved his bday money and allowance for 3 bdays it was worth it to see the smile on my sons face when he saw jacques ze whipper. Autistic kids get scared in crowds, but jacques ze whipper made it worth being in a Crowds and found out that his voice stops meltdowns

That is just the beauty of the Ren Fest I have HORRIBLE crowd anxiety (panic attack at ComiCon, not fun) And I have never been even mildly anxious at the Faire. Even penned in, before the gates open, when the King and Queen are greeting all the visitors… not even a little nervous. Just… watch out for the feral faerie king. I will wiggle my way into the tiniest spots

So you are pretty recognizable, but i do give props to people on the respect to the unwritten rule, If you are in costume, its okay to approach you as a performer If you are in street clothes, you are just a person not putting on a performance. They waited for you to approach them.

As a theatre professional, I think this is spot-on. Many people at the faire have backgrounds in performance of some type, and we all silently recognize putting on the character to be seen vs. just wanting to be a person.
I imagine it's also that the outfit makes you more approachable vs street clothes for those that do recognize you; a sort of "in character means good for talking" vs "in street clothes, he's just enjoying the faire" kind of contrast.

I completely agree. When I saw him in NJ (again) this year, his wife was with him after shows to hand out the pins so I said "hi" and a few words, later we saw each other on a line for food and I left her alone, my thinking is that she was on her personal private time then and deserved her privacy. I feel it would have been disrespectful to approach. I'm like that with any performer or celebrity I come across, not that that happens every day, 😂😂!

you can really tell Jacques used to be a newscaster based entirely on how he approaches interviewing people. politely and professionally with a clear pitch already prepped, camera at a polite distance. also love how wholesome so many of these people are. ren faire communities are really delightful
Putting that NPR experience to good use.
That last lady had on a beautiful blue dress!
Jaques ze Whipper goes undercover * pink panther theme intensifies *
Best thing about Ren Faires and other fun Conventions is that the first time you go, you have normal clothing. Every year, you buy a little something to make you stand out more. As long as you stay true to your vision, after a few years, you can end up with a full out costume.
In Jersey I was literally standing in line in costume talking to the people that sat front row about you and how they hoped Slayer man will show up. It was pretty fun
@zamboughnuts
16 күн бұрын
Now he's gotta try to find you when he's out of costume... Or maybe is in a different costume....
I would notice the resemblance, but not say anything because: a) Don't want to get it wrong. b) Bother the person whose work I enjoy - if they wanted fan attention, they'd bring it up.
This was fantastic! And hiding the hair really did make you look like just some average guy lol
I've seen enough of your videos now that I think I'd recognize you, but honestly the first time I came across a video of you in plain clothes it took me a minute. I was like "why does that guy look so familiar?"
if they've been following you for any length of time, your VOICE gives it away. aside and apart from the other physical characteristics which shall remain nameless. ;)
This was so fun to watch. You should do something like this for every Ren Fair you’re at. But maybe only once, and switch it up for which weekend you do it. I’d totally watch more videos of you undercover.
So just Johnny Cage amblin' around in the middle of a Colorado ren faire. The perfect disguise.
That was amazing, and that last girl's face when she saw you walking past was so cute!!
I think there's a speech out of character about the baseball cap and it's actually from a Chris Evans interview ages ago and he's right. Literally the baseball cap is the ultimate disguise because even if you messed up your hair to try and throw people off they'd still recognize you, the hat throws it all off :)
I'll be honest, I would recognize you if you came up to me and we started talking. But if we were just walking by each other, I'd never know the difference. I just don't pay attention to other people. Edit: Also, to be clear, it's the voice that would clue me in more than anything else, so even if we did start talking it would probably take me a few seconds.

Posted 30 seconds ago?! I’m never been this early! I love your content ~ it always brings a smile to my face. I hope I get to see you live someday!
He looks like every marvel character trying to disguise themselves with caps and sunglasses 😂
It’s really cool how you appreciate your fans man. I wish more entertainers remembered what’s important.
I started working renaissance festivals in 1977, and it never fails. Put on mundane clothes, and you become almost invisible to the masses. If there had been more people there, it would have been fun to see if anyone approached Jacques out of garb. Still, it was a fun experiment. I especially liked the one who talked about feeling safe to be in their own skin. That's a huge draw for me, as well. Huzzah!
I fully expected you to interview Ses in a variety of unconvincing disguises.
His build and posture are so distinctive that it’s pretty easy to spot him in the context of a Faire ground. Out on a city street or at a suburban mall, it might be harder. But he has stage presence, and it seems that’s difficult to disguise with “normal” clothes.
5:01 that guy in the background😂

Ah! Molly and Beau cosplays at 3:15 - you guys look fantastic!! (I'm wearing the Wildmother to the Bristol Faire this weekend or next ☺)
Honestly I'd not come up to a person out of costume assuming they're off the clock
Tight pants and walk would give it away immediately!❤❤❤
3:53 Honestly as long as the weather is right, faire clothes are soooo comfy and fun.
Hey, this Jacque guy is a great interviewer. He should work for NPR or something-
I bloody well said it! it's the magic moustache aaaaand the magic hair
That Beau and Molly cosplay-!
I love the fact that the more research into this there is the more the clark kent thing actually works
I don't know why but your street clothes gives coach energy especially with the cap.
"How many opportunities do you have to wear a crown and pretty dress?" Any day you want. My sister has gone grocery shopping in a regency period ball gown, while wearing a hat with a boat on it. Little kids often think she's a princess.
I am part of the MN Ren Fest. I have been there every year since I was a newborn in 1980. Folks never know who I am out of costume! I love it!❤
When you add the baseball cap, you look barely old enough to drink. That was the most effective disguise.
I was so happy to have seen your show at Colorado's Ren Faire! When that 9 year old requested 'who let the dogs out' was fantastic!
Great to see/hear you using your radio Interview skills sans moustache!!
lol We always talk about that...in the community, about how if you meet someone in costume and they're one person, and then you see them in street clothes OUTSIDE faire, and it's like "nahh....but 👀dat yew?" lol

With guns like those, Jacques doesn't need his whips.

Saw your show today, so much fun! Thanks!
I love seeing that you are a great person who doesn't mind talking with your fans and taking pictures! I wish I was brave enough to do that when you were at KRF. I grew up at that Renaissance fair. Yet I was shy when you first worked there. I enjoyed your shows, especially the fire whips. I was heartbroken to hear that you and Ses were leaving the faire you guys were entertaining. I loved your shows separately but loved the secret show. I see the happiness in you more now than your krf days. Keep up the great videos! This Massachusetts girl appreciates them! Michelle D

Swagger, dude. You have a very definite swagger.
I'm getting some serious Chris Evans vibes with that baseball cap. Pretty sure there's a superhero/villian using whips in Marvel or DC comics, maybe you should apply. 😄
New challenge unlocked: Go to a ren faire and find Bikes Beards and Brews, while out of costume.
I love how “undercover” was basically just a black version of the costume with shorter shoes, no bracers, and the mustache off 😂
Thank you for the awesome video !
My adopted mom was a performer for years. She always went on the last day out of costume to take in the faire. I worked for her and had pink hair. After the first hour of the first faire with pink hair, she bought me a hat so people would stop recognizing her.
