hot fish in his area
As someone into lizards, the 90f+ temperatures are something you just have to accept. The lizard you found at 5:02 is a Tree/Brush Lizard (Urosaurus). Not sure where in the Sonoran desert you are at that point, but could be either Ornate Tree Lizard or Long Tailed Brush Lizard.
21:13 A Solifuge. Sometimes called a sun spider, or a camel spider, although it isn't a spider.
@Exquailibur
Ай бұрын
Yep, they are really cool. They will often get caught out in the sun and will be so desperate for shade they will chase you to stay in your shadow. Leading them to shade will get it away from you because they just wanna avoid being cooked.
I legit screamed "yes" in my workplace bathroom cuz of this video. Can't wait for after work bake session with AVNJ
25:37 that is indeed snow, the temperature swings from day to night in this part of the country are a lot larger than the east coast. The elevation also makes a huge difference, id guess it's probably 65 or 70° up there and will get down to 35° at night. In Idaho and Utah I regularly still see snow in shaded spots into august if I'm hiking up in the mountains.

I can confirm that at those elevations in the west, it is below freezing. The air is drier in those areas and the snow amounts are very important for the amount of water that CA uses for drinking, ag, municipal, and fish and wildlife uses. The valleys are much warmer, which creates different types of ecosystems. The snowmelt also provides cold water for many native fish species including salmonids. There are definitely mountain lions and coyotes, but also many other species to be aware of. You definitely don't want to mess with seals or sea lions, which are very prevalent in the coastal regions and sometimes go far up the river chasing salmon runs.
@moterinsun

Yep! Agreed. Part of the danger of the desert is the temperature shifts.
25:17 looks like spearmint to me!
Mountain lions are the one animal in the US that I actually sincerely fear. When you were saying that your worst assumption was coyotoes, i got worried. A group of 3 mountain lions at night would be a a serious threat to pretty much any lone human. I'm glad you got out safely (and without having to learn for sure what you actually needed to be worrying about).

As a cat enthusiast, I can tell you that mountain lions are not as big a threat as people make them out to be - don’t get me wrong, they are dangerous and should never be approached, and can absolutely kill you, but chances are if you run into one you could probably scare it off if you do it right. Mountain lions can be pretty wimpy(again, still dangerous, never approach one and always look out of them). Luckily they usually hunt alone
@nonsequitor
Ай бұрын
Don't worry too much. Mountain lions are pussies and loners. 99.9% of the time you'll be fine. You're much more likely to be shot by accident, or killed in a traffic accident, or shot with your own gun, or shot in a school, or shot by police, or shot by the sheriff's department, or by Boeing - in fact, at 0.18 attacks per year you're ten times more likely to be killed during an insurrection at the White House than by a mountain lion. I get why a lot of Americans have anxiety tho 💯
@cielrobinson
Ай бұрын
@@moonstar_draws6283 I know it's not a statistically large threat. Cats are a special interest of mine, I respect them more than anything. But something about this particular fear feels very real to the ancient monkey coding in my brain. Cats in one form or another have been our main predator for a long time, evolutionarily speaking. I'm 115 lbs and like solo backpacking so maybe it is just the fact that they can be as big as I am, or the fact that I'd likely be alone, quiet, and less likely to be noticed before I end up dangerously close to some cubs or something.

@@moonstar_draws6283 how do I scare off a mountain lion (or even a group of them) properly?
That herb at 25:14 looks like some type of mint to me. Grows like a weed, especially near water and has a very strong but pleasant smell. Thyme has much smaller, roundish leaves, rosemary almost looks like little needles. That creek with the really colored up fish is such an amazing habitat with all the sun bleached, dead wood and the emmersed plants, makes me wanna do a naturalistic aquarium with very sparse wood hardscape, sandy substrate and just a hand full of plants that breach the surface.
pretty sure that herb you found was spearmint! my grandfather grew it in his backyard, and it spread like CRAZY.

Man these videos of you just going out and finding cool things are my absolute salvation. It's inspired me to spend a heck of a lot more time in nature just identifying things and exploring new places; a few days ago I found my first Stone Loach and today I saw my first ever Eurasian Jay (Ireland)! Thank you for keeping these adventure videos up - they've inspired me so much and I'm so much happier in my day to day :')
The Boars you saw are probably Javelina and they are actually native and they are peckaries (I probably didnt spell that right)
@joshblack4291
Ай бұрын
There are non native ones as well in some of the marshes in CA. There are also elk in some places.
2:50 it’s pronounced heela, thought you might like to know.
These videos are amazing! Its one of my fav series. But I’m always scared when AVNJ goes to some of these places alone. Like If something happens nobody would be there to help him. But Yea I remember when it started in the states near NJ and now it’s the other side of the states! Woah ! But Please AVNJ watch out for yourself and remember to stay safe. We don’t want anything bad happening to such an amazing person qwq
27:05 this is what a lot of the mountain streams look like pretty much all year! It's the faster water mainly flowing through granite and other rocks instead of soil.
"Im almost positive this is rosemary or thyme" This is why you're the fish guy and not the herb guy 😅
You didn’t see any California Killifish because they’re pretty much wholly restricted to Southern California (with the exception of a Morro Bay population). Quite abundant within their range in similar habitats.

a wild zachfrat spotted on youtube 😱
if you find yourself in southern AZ again you absolutely HAVE to check out the sonoran desert museum- closer to tucson than phoenix but still well worth the trip. one of the coolest experiences i’ve ever had.
you should do something in florida with fishingarrett AKA the florida everglades guy
at 14:49 i’d probably say hellgrammite (dobsonfly larvae) they are actually an indicator species
AVNJ goes heat-stroking in the desert
This is super cool seeing you catching fish in places similar to where I've lived!! Thanks for making the trip!
AVNJ, When you talked about netting on the coast I thought, hey, maybe he can just get a permit. Then I started googling how to get a permit and saw all the BS involved and realized, THATS why he doesn’t go to the trouble of applying for permits that are lengthy and severely specific as to their scope. Man it sucks!

Ayeeeeee greetings from New Mexico! I've not finished the video yet, but got super excited about the location! Hope you had an ok time dealing with the temperature! Edit: That herb is mint lmao. Actual mint smells very different from store extracts.
So excited that you're out west! This is such a fun series!
Commiserates in arizonan😅😅😅. Also for future reference Gila is pronounced Heela. The wild pigs you saw were almost certainly javelina as well. Very common in that area by the Phoenix valley
Man went to a scorching desert to find fish. Dedication.
Hey!!! I looked for Gila Chub and Speckled Dace in Bright Angel Creek at the bottom of Grand Canyon in April! There is a Humpback Chub in the Colorado River too, but I have no idea how exclusive that is. Just in case you wanted to train for a rim to river hike of GC hahaha.
Thanks for doing this for us dude! Truly appreciate your channel and content! Stay safe out there!
kites, hawks, buzzards, falcons, harriers, caracara, eagles, vultures and osprey all eat different things, you can't just accuse them of hunting birds. That's falcons and true hawks (mostly). pigs and chickens are from China. goshawk was the bird calling. maybe. - your resident ornithologist

Here hand netting is basically illegal because of bullhead which are protected
I wanted to make a joke about all the mentions of "chub" and it really wouldn't be too hard but nah, too easy

I hope you enjoyed your time in Arizona, you made it way prettier than it really is 😭
One of my favorite Adventures yet. Thank you !
25:23. It's neither. Both rosemary and thyme have small, thin leaves tho some thyme has rounder leaves they're still small and have different texture. This looks like peppermint...now I wouldn't give my head for it as I'm not an expert and I cannot smell it through computer nor am I an expert but I'm like....90% sure it is.

My guess would be lemon balm, which is also in the mint family, but doesn't smell like mint, so less obviously mint to someone who doesn't know what it is.
the last bit with the eye shine had me in suspense haha, GREAT video; watched it all

Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter...cool video👍
Fire lifelisting vid 🔥🐟 California Killifish are mostly in SoCal so I'm sure you'll get some during the LA trip next year. Also that mountain lion story is pretty scary, I didn't know they explored tidepools too WTF. stay safe out there
25:26 that looks like mint.
24:47 that ain’t no crayfish! That’s a lobster!
It was a great adventure video, great shots and just great in the middle of nature , i like pure nature 😊👍
Thank you for visiting Arizona!!!
WEST COAST BEST COAST! I'd imagine you can find some pretty cool fish in some of the alpine lakes and streams we got up in Washington State.
We have a surprising amount of native fish here despite how little natural water ways we have
Yippee, new avnjs adventures just dropped! :D

did you ever say where you are in arizona? while i think it looks like youre somewhere in the east valley i cant tell for sure.

It’s a western black widow
might need to make me an aquarium
I had no idea they had black widows on the west coast, I thought they just had the brown ones. Black widow are very common in my area, just about anytime you look in a small dark area you’ll find one.

14:00 😳.... Sure hope you're packing hand sanitizer.... hopefully it's just local conditions/ sediment- fish looked ok 🤷♂️, but river has a look of of raw sewage input: that weird emulsion look plus the black algae... looks like our rivers in the UK since we privatised our water industry💸💩 🐟☠️. Fingers crossed it's just some soluble clay or something. P.S the extra moths is probably due to them all being wiped out by agriculture in the east 😢
