I went to Scarborough

Ойын-сауық

I take a look around Scarborough on my first ever visit. I did not do any research before visiting, so I find out about things as I come across them.

There used to be 5 funicular cliff lifts in Scarborough 2 in the North Bay and 3 in the South Bay. The circle you could see from Spa Bridge is now a car park but in Victorian times it was an aquarium...When I was a kid I used to call it Tracy Island 😆🤦🏼‍♀️

@SuperLisalis a funicular is a tramway that works on a pully system. So as one vehicle goes down the second will go up at the same time. I think it works on weight too originally I could be wrong.

Yes the Cliff tramways as they now call them used to be water powered, not really powered as it was just a balancing act the one at the bottom would have a full tank of water the one at the top would fill its tank till it out weighed the bottom car then they would start to travel up and down the cliff. I believe the last one operating works off of an electric motor however. Folkstone has a water powered one. Also Lynton and Lynmouth. Also Saltburn North Yorkshire.

I may be a biased Yorkshireman but Scarborough is the prettiest resort in the country so I’m pleased you really enjoyed the place Stephen, despite there not being much open on the sea front. You really have to visit in summer when all the gardens are in bloom and everything’s open, the kids are enjoying the beach and the fishermen are bringing in the catch of the day! It’s so quintessentially English it makes your heart ache!❤️😍🥰 Thanks again for your tour.👍🏼

The basket things are called lobster pots. This is the major fishing industry in the area now. The building on the road is an old toll house for paying to use the marine drive when it was new. The one on the north bay was demolished many years ago. Scrabster is a harbour in Scotland where the boat belongs. The ruins by the Church are from that part of it destroyed during the sieges of the Castle in the 17th century Civil War. A massive cannon was fired from inside the Church at the Castle, which destroyed the Keep after 3 days continuous firing of 64 pound balls. The Royalists in the Castle surrendered after 3 months to the Parliaments army.

The Spa lift was operational in the early 2000s whenI attended a National MIND Conference there. Our hotel was in the crescent that you can see the back of from the long bridge across the valley. Although the conference centre is within the Spa buildings, I don't think there are baths or anything open nowadays. Ever the icebreaker, my friend Pat had everybody in the lift car in fits of laughter by alling it a vibrator on the first morning - then by producing her vibrator from her handbag during the ride down on the second day! Although we generally came to Blackpool for our family holidays, we did try Scarborough instead in 1977 and 1979; when everything was in much fuller swing. The Spa Pavillion was then used as a theatre much like the Winter Gardens Pavilion in Blackpool used to be. There was an absolutely huge theatre further up, past the Grand Hotel in operation then too, as well as another near the railway station and yet another open-air one, in a park on the North Bay. A much smaller and less populous town than Blackpool in the first place, Scarborough is also a shadow of what it was back then, though it should probably be viewed as including the vast clifftop caravan parks at least halfway to Filey, as that's where the morer affordable holiday accommodation was, back then.

I visited Scarborough for the first time in over 40 years last August and had enough time to give it a good look. There are an amazing number of pleasing old buildings for a comparatively small town. There was no sand on the road along the South Bay shore but it was nose-to-tail traffic. The typical fast food outlets you tend to get in seaside towns were fairly restricted to the northern end of South Bay (an advantage in my opinion). It is a shame the castle was closed when you went there, because the view from there is fantastic. The view from Oliver's Mount (on the western edge of the town) is also wonderful. I took my bike with me and it was so hilly that I was often down to the lowest gear, cycling around. As you get further aware from the coast, the houses in the residential roads get a bit like those anywhere. The A64 and the A170 coming into the town get very busy / congested in the morning but presumably are quieter out of season. Scarborough is a good place to visit but it is also close to other places worth exploring, if you have your own transport (North York Moors, Whitby, Ravenscar, Robin Hood's Bay, Brampton Cliffs RSPB reserve and Bridlington). In that regard, it is a much more attractive destination than Blackpool in my view.

I love Scarborough. I am going in September I haven't been for years. In the Victorian times all the rich used to visit to take the waters thats why there is all the beautiful cresents and gardens. I love the history of the place. I am a fan of the Brontes and two of the sisters died of TB they both were only in their twenties. Anne went there hoping that fresh air and the waters woud help. But she died shortly after arrivng. Walking all the hills will keep you fit . Thanks for all your brilliant videos .😊

The design of the hotel was based on the theme of time, with four towers. representing the seasons, twelve floors, the months of the year, fifty two chimneys for the weeks of the year and three hundred and sixty five bedrooms the days of the year. It was built in a V shape in honour of Queen Victoria. The interior design and furnishings were of the very highest standard, creating one of the most luxurious hotels in the world at the time. There were over thirty lounges and public rooms. Over six million bricks were used in its construction.

There,s my childhood holidays in the Sixties, absolutely love Scarborough, sadly both my Aunt and Uncle have passed away but still get down from Newcastle as often as I can and still cannot go with out walking past the house I know so well in Brinkburn Road. Why do I do that knowing my folks are gone, always feel something whilst I pass that house !!!

The Art deco building was an Odeon but is now the stephen Joseph Theatre, where Alan Ayckbourn premieres his plays. Blackpool North was opened in 1846, so only a year after the railways reached Scarborough!

At least it was not Kicking off in Scarborough 👍😁 Lol. I look forward to your next adventure. I am enjoying these videos. Have a great weekend 👍👍
