Grocery store near me sells Weller 12 year for $45. You have to go to the customer service desk and ask for it and it's not always around but everything they sell is at state minimum and they can obtain about anything you want. Sometimes they can be a gold mine.

Well, San Jose. I use to reside there years ago, in fact I was out there this Feb 1 to Feb 5....Anyway, that is what made it so interesting living there was the great quest for Whiskey, Bourbon, and Rye. My best encounters outside of Bevmo, was the numerous Liquor Stores...I resided on the West Side....but when you looked there was variety and slection...sometimes the price was to gouged.

Marsala is a Sicilian fortified wine that was originally made to compete with Port when British sailors would come to Sicily as the British at the time loved fortified wines. San Jose is the land of easy whiskey since the scene is heavily moving into Tequila. All across CA the availability of bourbon/rye is extremely available compared to the rest of the US. I guess the Fireball/Wheatley Vodka sales are still strong so you still get crazy allocations all across the state.

  • @joshgonzales117

I think when you tried to get into scotch and see if there was one you like, it was a good variety, But I probably wouldve started you off with some different American Single Malts. They share more similarities with bourbon as typically they are aged in new american oak which results in bigger bolder flavors, rather than delicate complex ones. They tend to be a bit young, but its a fast growing catagory and most that Ive had are delicious

You pointed to the scotch on the top shelf in one of these places and all I see is Scotland. Tax went up years ago and I think what craft distilleries are doing in the US with malted and copper pot stilled whiskies is too compelling comparatively (by price, especially). The other thing is that in Scotland AB Inbev and Diageo own them all except a very few. Those that like Islay scotches should drink Kilchoman - the only craft distillery left in Islay. In the US what comes to mind for me is Defiant (out of North Carolina). If you don't typically like scotch, Defiant is easier on the palette, like a lowland scotch. Balcones (from Tx) is one of my favorites - very very very unique. And there are a couple from ASW in Atlanta that due to value/price, I can't pass up. I basically try to like everything from ASW, but I"m biased, being an Atlantan. Would be curious your opinion on the "Fiddler" line (bourbon wise). You have probably covered it and I just haven't seen it yet. The pecan barrel one to me is pretty good.

So much so that I bet anyone who doesn’t like Irish whiskeys will also enjoy it. Red breast also has a bourbon barrel aged Irish whiskey…I have a bottle, but haven’t cracked it yet. If you like scotch, Glenmorangie makes quality whisky, that doesn't break the bank. Most scotch has exploded in price the past couple of years, atleast here in Europe. So i've been dipping my toes in to bourbon. For some reason the cheap ones are marked up quite a bit. Wild T 101 is 30usd while a Eagle rare is 40, then again a Knob Creek 9 is like 60 usd.

I have a local store that marks up bottles to full secondary+. If a tater from Alabama comes in, Stagg is 349. If a local hoarder who already has 14 bottles of every batch made comes in, it's 349. If a local comes in regularly, purchases shelfers, and talks to the owner like a human, Stagg is 100. Lol! I fully support this method.

It's pretty funny when people increase price above MSRP on the bourbon county stouts. In my area anything from 2022 or older is HEAVILY discounted because the retailers want them off shelf. One of my local gas stations is already marking the 2023 releases down 30-50% just to move them. I walked into one of their locations and the clerk said "take all of them and I'll give you a great price." They were already $6.50 per 2023 barrel aged stout but they had 35 of them on shelf. Probably could have walked out with them all at $5 a piece just so they could clear their shelf space. Most chains know that the bottles are designed to "age" in the glass but they simply don't care. If the item is not moving quickly they will price it to move. Per year they make far less off the Goose Island Stouts than they do off PBR/Coors/Bud Light and they want more shelf space for those high movement items. The smaller specialty stores just want to make margin on their unique products since they don't need as much footage dedicated to their standard and high moving products. Of course, you won't find 2017 bottles in most chains - they would have thrown them into the dumpster by 2020/2021.

Don't want to sound like a "fanboy" (cuz I'm more like a "fanoldman) but this was a great video. As my brother would say, "everybody with a garage is making bourbon" these days. I only wish I had to the budget to try some of these picks. If in California, you have to try Dorothy Arzner Rye whiskey which I believe is distilled in California by Francis Coppola. Excellent! Cheers!

I can’t seem to add a photo I took at rod and hammer but they make their own stuff. It’s good for being young. I believe mine is 117 proof
