I Watched Every Anime That Lost an Oscar

Фильм және анимация

Every year, the Academy Awards disrespect animation in some way or another. But anime nominated for an Oscar tend to get consistently snubbed. Aside from Spirited Away, every anime to be nominated for an Oscar has lost.
With The Boy and the Heron nominated in 2024 for the Best Animated Feature Award, I decided to revisit each anime nominated and give a few brief thoughts on each, as well as if they really deserved to lose.
Chapters:
0:00 Introduction
2:47 Howl's Moving Castle
4:50 The Eight Year Gap
5:47 The Wind Rises
7:22 The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
9:30 When Marnie Was There
11:31 The Red Turtle (Does This Count?)
14:11 Mirai

Let's hope that this could be a trend where more anime movies come into play because I know there's a lot of animators in Japan that work their hardest to make these movies great. I'm happy that the boy and Heron. win even though I was cheering for spider verse It was either that movie or boy of the herron and I am happy that it win and brings hopefully a bright light to the academies to look more into Japanese animation.

I do think we have to acknowledge that Spirited Away was distributed by Disney, and that might have had a factor in it's win. I remember for years people telling me at work, or just randomly "there's this really great Disney movie..." Some of those Academy voters may have been under the impression that being distributed and dubbed by Disney made it a Disney movie. Or they might not have cared about the difference.

Boy & the Heron won, but not without Jimmy Kimmel's head-scratching rant about 2D films being "generic" despite a majority of animated films being CG.

A movie winning an Oscar doesn't mean it was the best out of its category, only that it was the one seen by the most Academy voters, a very exclusive club with very opaque voting practices. 9 times out of 10, it's proof of nothing more than Hollywood patting itself on the back.

Also, one thing I would like to add would be that Howl's Moving Castle wasn't even nominated in 2004 as it was snubbed by Shark Tale of films.

11:50 for what it's worth, france has a pretty long history of collaboration on japanese anime and a lot of manga and anime both inspired and were inspired by french artists. Moebius in particular comes to mind as his work and miyazaki's work have a lot of inspiration back and forth going on. But you can think of projects like oban star racer too. So yeah a french/japanese collab absolutely counts (though I'm french so I'm biased as hell =p)

I love how Oppenheimer won in 2024 but an arguably better telling of the same type of story lost for animated film in 2011.

10:34 I know you can argue Inside Out the rightful winner (I would too), but all this time later and "Pixar presenting the award to Pixar" still doesn't sit right with me. As for this year, even though I thought Across the Spider-Verse was a whole step back from "Enter-", I don't see how it loses. And I LOVED The Boy and The Heron, even if it wasn't my favorite Miyazaki film. If I had to pick personally, it'd be Nemona, but I'd be shocked if that takes it. It does feel like Spider-Verse's to lose.

Great video. And I'm glad that you were wrong and the boy and the heron win despite of me kind of was cheering for spider verse but even if it didn't win I was glad that the boy and the heron win. Let's hope that the academy makes this as a trend where they more focus on Japanese animation. But not only that but also animation at all. Because it's ridiculous that to this point they still don't give respect to animation and just throw animation in its own category and just say hey let's just always give it to Disney again nothing against Disney for many of their good movies but animation is just more than just Disney. And the more that we try to distance away from other types of animation projects that were incredible The more that those projects be forgotten or be overlooked. Once again I'm glad that the boy and the heron wins. Continue making great videos Anthony

Thanks for being honest that Howls is messy. I think I'll forever be shaky on how I view it, but there's still a lot to love. It just gets harder after having the read the very deft novel. However, one thing it does absolutely fantastic is the dub casting Jean Simmons as old Sophie and Lauren Bacall as the Witch of the Waste. They magnify the characters in a way that Bale does not for Howl IMO.

All the dub is incredible, but Jean Simmons in particular just is so naturally perfect. I love Howl, but the film version is sloppy at times. It's not Miyazaki's best, but I do love it.

Like duh, EVERY anime lost at the Oscars, except the Spirited Away and The House of Small Cubes. As Parasite director said, the Academy Awards are very regional. Since as a professional culture critic you are aware of it (with the transparent unmeritocratic nature exposed), why are we still complaining about them instead of moving on to the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Mainichi Awards or our own judgement? Imagine, if you will, a video titled "top 10 anime movies of 2023 (which the academy will ignore lol)" consisting of a bunch of reviews. Compared to that simply complaining about the Awards, stating obvious facts (like the supremacy of the Spiderverse movies), throwing a bunch of names of movies to the audience (I get the appeal, I'm intellectual too, I too am aware of most of them), only occasionally going into the actual effort of comparing the chances... It may seem like an easy content to make, and sure it is, and I shouldn't be that mad at it, since compared to the Fanservice vid or the first culture war one it's a lighter... but yeah, I expected more 😅 So far in your journey as a video essayist you nailed the audio, the visuals and the editing on a satisfying level. The script needs more fat, less introductory material.

HTTYD2 was NOT better than most of the nominees that year, I'm sorry. I don't think Elemental is gonna win (or any of the other nominees for that matter, despite how much I love Nimona as well as The Boy and the Heron) over Across the Spider-Verse.

The Oscars are a joke. The whole world produces better movies, then Hollywood. Yet the Oscars pat themselves on the shoulder every year. You can see that, with the Frozen-TWR-problem. I mean, Frozen?! Come on. And remember, Disney, Sony, Warner and DreamWorks rule the Oscars, because they are American companies. The Oscars are not a prize for the best film of the planet. They are the prize of the best American movies. And if you compare Big Hero Six with Princess Maguyia (sorry, my Japanese is bad) you see, that American filmmaking is everywhere but not everything, especially in quality standards. Even if Hollywood would pay me for it, I wouldn't work there. It's a corrupt, disgusting world full of bad art, sexual assaulters, greed and stupid people. I don't want that. My childhood was formed by japanese, french and german media and I will stick to that, even if it means, that nobody will ever see or appreciate my work. But that's better, then living a lie! And americacentric film is the biggest lie of the 21st century.

I get this is not the video to bring it up, but since it mentions the film, can someone explain to me why people love “a silent voice”? I watched a bunch of years ago, so I know I have probably forgotten a lot of details, but the idea I have is that it’s a mess. I remember finding it both too long and too short at the same time. I hated the fact that one of the bully chicks reappears but doesn’t seem to regret the bullying at all. She explains she hates the deaf girl because their bullying of her to the group falling apart and it felt like the movie was asking me to empathize with her. She is never sympathetic and every time she was on screen and I thought “WHHHHYYY?” I also find the ending very contrived. I found most of the movie going for a realism, but the ending tears that completely and ties everything in a neat little bow that I just thought was completely at odds with the rest of movie and it doesn't deserve that ending. The gang all become friends again and that’s how the protagonist finds his redemption, which… honestly, I don’t get. I was given zero reasons to want that group back together and I don't really buy that that is what redeems the protagonist (I get why he feels like that, but I found it very unrealistic). I only met them when they were jerks and we don’t follow them after that, except for the annoying girl which makes a compelling case for why the group is better off apart.

It's based on a manga, so maybe try reading that? I watched the movie ages ago as well so my memory is also not great of it. (And I haven't sat down to read the manga either, funny I'm promoting it.) Cinema Therapy here on KZread did a video essay on the movie. And Merphy Napier also on KZread reviewed both the movie and the manga.

This is not your best video. The constant listing of anime films from Japan feels like you are ignoring that not all animated films from around the world are objectively better than other films. A Whisker Away was not good and didn't deserve to be nominated compared to other Japanese films that year like On Gaku Our Sound and Lupin III The First. Also, your fear of Elemental winning is flimsy at best. It hasn't picked up any steam and was pushed out of the major awards at shows like The Annies. It had a good theatrical run, but it won't win when everyone is on SpiderVerse and Boy and the Heron hype train. The whole Elemental bashing also felt needlessly pointless? Like, all things considered, you all should be lucky something like Trolls Band Together or Wish didn't get nominated. I like the rest of your videos, but this is not my favorite
